Beneath Paris, a subterranean labyrinth of former quarries holds the remains of several millions Parisians, moved here after a decision in the late 18th century to close cemeteries within the city walls to protect public health.
Also known as the “Church of Bones”, the Gothic/Baroque Sedlec Ossuary (Kostnice Sedlec), a Roman Catholic chapel in Kutna Hora, contains the skeletons of between 40000 and 70000 people, who perished in the famine of 1318, the plague 30 years later and the Hussite wars of the 15th century. The bones of many have been used to decorate the chapel in elaborate and macabre sculptures, a practice which started in 1511, when the task of exhuming skeletons and stacking their bones in the chapel, according to legend, was given to a half-blind monk of the Cistercian order, and was completed in its current form in 1870, after the aristocratic Schwarzenberg family funded a vast Ossuary reconstruction assigned to František Rint, a local woodcarver.
