It was lovely to get a rare night out in my old haunt. I really enjoyed distant views of barn and long eared owls, sadly on this occasion no pics.
The curlew is a bird which is highly skilled in avoiding yours truly.
So it was a nice surprise to get a very close encounter.
Numbers of this stunning bird are sadly on the decline, so it was nice to see them doing well locally.

The Barred caught three mice on this rainy afternoon either it is a very skilled hunter or there are a lot of mice in the forest. I used ISO 5600, shutter speed 1/1600sec, f/5.6 at 500mm a compromise to keep my shutter speed up. More photos on my website www.melanieleesonphotography.com/Recent-Photos/March-2021/

Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They typically have harsh wailing or squawking calls; stout, longish bills; and webbed feet. Most gulls are ground-nesting carnivores which take live food or scavenge opportunistically, particularly the Larus species. Live food often includes crabs and small fish. Gulls have unhinging jaws which allow them to consume large prey. Gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea, except for the kittiwakes. 55689
Under the skilled hand of Mr. Tom Scott, a quartet of Lake State EMDs (SD70M/SD70M/SD40-2/SD50) rumble north through mid-Michigan with 122 cars of manifest as cats and dogs fall from the sky. I'm sure I looked like an absolute bafoon standing on the side of interstate 75, but I got the shot!
The loggerhead shrike is beautiful and a very skilled hunter. He also can be very brutal . It is the way they were created and necessary for their survival. This is the part of nature that can be difficult to see but it is nature and survival.
Wisging you a lovely and blessed evening !!
Ibises are a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae, that inhabit wetlands, forests and plains. Ibises usually feed as a group, probing mud for food items, usually crustaceans. It is widespread across much of Australia. It has a predominantly white plumage with a bare, black head, long down curved bill and black legs. They are monogamous and highly territorial while nesting and feeding. Most nest in trees, often with spoonbills or herons. Due to its increasing presence in the urban environment and its habit of rummaging in garbage, the species has acquired a variety of colloquial names such as tip turkey; and bin chicken, and in recent years has become an icon of popular culture, being regarded with passion, wit, and, in equal measure, affection and disgust. 42939
when Herons build their nest....I noticed an unusual smile on their face, they seem more jolly anyway :) It is truly fascinating to watch them... I initially thought that they were just picking dead branches suspended in the trees for their nest but they literately break branches from the trees. They are real acrobats as they have to stay balanced on a relatively small branch using their long skinny legs while pulling and cracking the branch they want to take to the nest. Some herons are amazingly skilled, they are in and out of the tree in no times with a branch while others fly in, and have to hop from one branch to another and then another until they finally get something they are happy with... some herons leave with nothing... I wonder what their partner think of that performance when they return to the nest beak empty.

A last one (maybe) of the lynx kitten. They are already skilled tree climbers although they are only about 10 weeks old!

Vielleicht mein letztes Bild von den jungen Luchsweibchen (vorläufig...). Auch wenn sie erst 10 Wochen alt sind, können sie schon geschickt klettern

Merlin
The Merlin (Falco columbarius) is a small species of Falcon from the Northern Hemisphere, with numerous subspecies throughout North America and Eurasia. A bird of prey once known colloquially as a Pigeon Hawk in North America, the Merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic; some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter. Males typically have wingspans of 21–23 inches, with females being slightly larger. They are swift fliers and skilled hunters who specialize in preying on small birds in the size range of sparrows to quail. The Merlin has for centuries been well regarded as a Falconry Bird. In recent decades Merlin populations in North America have been significantly increasing, with some Merlin’s becoming so well adapted to city life that they forgo migration.

A cockatoo is any of the 21 parrot species belonging to the family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. Cockatoos are recognisable by the prominent crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird. Cockatoos prefer to eat seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding. Cockatoos are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Some cockatoo species have been adversely affected by habitat loss, particularly from a shortage of suitable nesting hollows after large mature trees are cleared; conversely, some species have adapted well to human changes and are considered agricultural pests. 14796
"The pied kingfisher is a skilled hunter with remarkable abilities and interesting habits. The species is definitely one of Africa’s most interesting black and white animals.
If you evoke a kingfisher image, you see its unmistakable dagger beak. Well, the pied kingfisher is even more recognizable due to its simple black and white colors and its comparatively larger size.
It is one of the most largely populated species, ranking in the top three. These high numbers could be due to its specialized hunting abilities, which no other kingfisher species possesses.
The distinctive hunting technique of pied kingfishers has earned the species a few records. Not only are they the largest hovering bird. But they are also the only kingfishers with the ability to perform a figure of eight wing stroke.
They hunt by hovering 50-65 feet above the water and then diving headfirst (or rather, bill-first) into the water. Pied kingfishers demonstrate spectacular speed and agility on the hunt."
Another skilled artist on the street using a plain white t-shirt as a canvas. I stood for few minutes to watch him doing this wearable, trendy and versatile work of art! It only takes 20 minutes to get a shirt done. What brilliant idea as a Christmas or birthday presents.
The red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) also known as Banksian- or Banks' black cockatoo, is a large black cockatoo native to Australia. Adult males have a characteristic pair of bright red panels on the tail that gives the species its name. It is more common in the drier parts of the continent. Five subspecies are recognised, differing chiefly in beak size. Although the more northerly subspecies are widespread, the two southern subspecies, the forest red-tailed black cockatoo and the south-eastern red-tailed black cockatoo are under threat. The species is usually found in eucalyptus woodlands, or along water courses. In the more northerly parts of the country, these cockatoos are commonly seen in large flocks. They are seed eaters and cavity nesters, and as such depend on trees with fairly large diameters, generally Eucalyptus. Populations in southeastern Australia are threatened by deforestation and other habitat alterations. Of the black cockatoos, the red-tailed is the most adaptable to aviculture, although black cockatoos are much rarer and much more expensive in aviculture outside Australia. 15159
Built of native sandstone by skilled English stone masons, this early Anglican Church was erected to meet the spiritual needs of a group of people who came over from England in the 1830’s to settle the prairies of western Peoria county here in Illinois. One of the oldest churches in the area, there are sister churches to this one in Brimfield and Robin’s Nest (Jubilee). With Bishop Philander Chase nearby and a seminary for training young ministers established at Robin’s Nest, it looked like there was a fair chance that the western Peoria county prairie would be modeled after Yorkshire England. In Southern Illinois at a place called Albion, there was already an earlier successful English prairie settlement started by a man named George Flowers. At this early date the prairies of Illinois were completely up for grabs because they were considered undesirable for settlement due to a shortage of available wood for building housing and for heating and cooking. The English with their extensive knowledge of building with stone and heating with coal which is very abundant in Illinois were undeterred by the prairie conditions which caused American settlers to shun the prairies in their search for inhabitable lands. To this day a glance at the telephone book will reveal a large number of English surnames among the local population. These people came to stay and are an important part of the state’s establishment though they seem to be largely forgotten in discussions of early Illinois settlement. They were educated, skilled, and religiously devout.

"Basch was a skilled blacksmith and worked for farmers in the vicinity of Port Oneida. He also was a carpenter, who helped to build farms and churches in Port Oneida, Good Harbor, and Arcadia.
The farmhouse reflects the carpentry skills of the Basch family. The window pediments and gables feature ornate wood details, and the gable porch pediment has a decorative sunburst pattern. The vernacular Queen Anne house has an irregular floor plan, two stories, a gable roof with several one story cross-gables, and clapboard siding with cornerboards. The use of fieldstones in the foundation of the house porch and pillars was a common practice in Port Oneida."
The Sparrowhawk uses its long tail to manoeuvre with speed and great agility through the forest and branches. The Ravens issued a warning call when it caught a glimpse of it and all the little birds cowered in the trees. It moves so fast it takes its prey by surprise and the poor Photographer too as it flies like a ghost through the forest, its burning yellow eyes fixated on their prey. A very skilled hunter.

While skilled in many disciplines, from painting to sculpture to metal work, artist Lowell Davis is perhaps best known for his farm animal figurines, distributed to thousands of gift shops across North America. Lowell was often called the “Norman Rockwell of Rural Art”. His home, Red Oak II, is just outside of Carthage, Missouri. Lowell depicts himself in this art piece, "The Flying Wagon". RIP Lowell, we all miss you!
This Current Batch Was taken Within 10 Rushed Seconds (Not Accounting For Window Glare That Could have been avoided in a less hurried status)... I had walked into the VIP Lounge Of Delta Airlines As I had noticed such a Gorgeous Window Opportunity... I was subsequently chased out of the Delta VIP Lounge by the "Host" Gatekeeper Who Didn't Understand that I did not seek the VIP Free Food Buffet... I Give All Credit For The Imperfections To The Skilled Delta VIP Lounge Gatekeeper...
My Non-VIP Flights On Delta were two of the best air travels that I ever had (pre-pandemic), but I will always remember That "Host" With The Most... Before the flights with Delta I had asked for permissions to photograph during the trip, and I received a nice form letter (probably dispatched while they were laughing their heads off)
This was New Years Eve on Bournemouth Beach looking towards Hengistbury Head.
Quite interesting conditions with very lively waves. I liked the way the light sort of splits the image in half with the curvy cloud matching the waters edge.
A happy accident of course, I'm not actually skilled at this!!
I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Spotted hyenas are famed scavengers and often dine on the leftovers of other predators. But these hardy beasts are also skilled hunters that will take down wildebeest or antelope. They also kill and eat birds, lizards, snakes, and insects.
In an increasingly overpopulated Africa, hyenas and humans come into frequent contact. In fact, the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania actually leave their dead to be consumed by hyenas. However, these intelligent and bold animals will raid food stores and crops and are blamed for many livestock and even some human deaths. In some areas they have been heavily hunted as destructive pests.
Spotted hyenas are the largest of three hyena species. Brown and striped hyenas are the other two. Although hyenas appear similar to dogs, they are actually more closely related to cats.
Seen in the Museé Rodin in Paris.
The lovers depicted are Francesca da Rimini and Paulo Malatesta, her husband's brother, as featured in Dante's 'Inferno'. [Dante himself is the subject of Rodin's famous 'The Thinker' statues]
In the story, the lovers are discovered by Francesca's husband, and, let's just say, it did not end well for them.
Rodin would have made an original small model, probably in clay, from which a team of skilled craftsmen and artisans would make enlarged copies and casts. Rodin would then make finishing touches to those sculptures. Therefore, numerous 'originals' of various sizes can be said to exist.
The one pictured here was the first large-scale model, ordered by the French Government for an exhibition in 1898. A smaller bronze version sent for display at an 1893 Exhibition in Chicago was considered too risqué for public display and could only be viewed by personal application - a bit like having to register for certain web-sites nowadays.....
Rodin's genius for sculpting detailed anatomical detail is clearrly visible in this most beautiful sculpture.
A farrier is a skilled craftsperson with a sound knowledge of both theory and practice of the craft, capable of shoeing all types of equine feet, whether normal or defective, of making shoes to suit all types of work and working conditions, and of devising corrective measures to compensate for faulty limb action.
Socotra cormorant Phalacrocorax nigrogularis is endemic to Arabia, found nowhere else across the globe apart from the Arabian Gulf and Arabian Sea.
Socotra cormorant is among the most skilled fish-catching birds in Bahrain and Arabian Gulf. It dives more than 10 m chasing fish underwater.
The nesting colony of Socotra cormorant Phalacrocorax nigrogularis on Hawar Island, south of Bahrain, is among the largest in the world. As the case with other cormorant species, nesting colonies of Socotra cormorant fluctuate widely in size over time.
Socotra cormorant lays eggs in small depressions in the ground with thousands of dense nests forming sizable breeding colonies. As such, heavy rain and cold winter temperatures often lead to mass mortality of eggs and chicks.
Seagulls are among key predators of Socotra cormorant Phalacrocorax nigrogularis on Hawar Islands. Despite continuous protection by parents, gulls succeed to prey on cormorant’s eggs and young chicks.
