I think I had just watched Woody Allen's Crimes And Misdeamours for a second time, and then re-watched SCTV's parody on Ingmar Bergman films, so I was briefly into composed, Bergmanesque poses. Marker on tracing paper, 1989

When the Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson released his eponymous solo album in 1988, after years of inactivity, there was a huge media coverage of his return to recording. I did this series of concept sketches around 1989, but never got around to doing a finished illustration of one of my favourite 20th century pop composers.

This is a ten app mashup I did once the idea had struck me. I've wanted to test out some of the apps on my iPad for a while and this seemed a good reason to branch out a little from the Adobe Ideas, Art Rage and Brushes pyramid of power I've been using.

It's a pretty simple sketch app, very responsive, line responds to speed and makes a nice mark, fixed set of limited colors (onse set opaque and one set transparent), handy for very quick sketching, results look a little like henpitsu.
This ink on vellum rough was created as a planning drawing for an Remembrance Day illustration that would be published in the Ottawa Citizen on November 11.
Purposely left with rough color boundaries to see if that "defect" when it's widespread becomes simply a feature or style characteristic, although I don't know if I'll do any more this way. It sure is a lot less work this way, compared with, say: www.flickr.com/photos/readerwalker/7958293088/

One of my favorite unsung animated movies is The Iron Giant.
I just watched it for the first time in years with Kellbot, and I think it's withstood the test of time. I can't believe it came out a decade ago...
This rough layout formed the basis for a cd package cover illustration for dj MC Mario. It was drawn in 1997.
