30th November 1975 was a first for two reasons.
On the Hartslock nature reserve, which was land newly acquired by the (then called) Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Naturalists' Trust, the first work party arrived to revert years of neglect by clearing invasive scrub (mainly hawthorn and dogwood) from the lower slopes of the site.
The Berkshire Conservation Volunteers (Bec), on their first official workday, supplied a workforce of 19. They were supported by the Oxfordshire Conservation Corps and pupils from a local school.
At the end of a cold, foggy day, volunteers gather in front of a huge bonfire. BeC members featured here include Mike Thomas, Tony Davey, Fiona Rolls, Bob Hall (first Chairman), Richard Andrew and Roland Crothers. Nigel Phillips, the reserve warden, is also in the picture.

One of the early tasks for the Berkshire Conservation Volunteers was to fence off the orchid site which was being grazed by sheep. Two complete weekends in September 1976 were assigned to finish the job and at the same time to develop skills in fencing for the volunteers.
Nigel Phillips, the reserve warden at the time, is on the right.

It was a very foggy day. The Thames, which runs close to the site at the bottom of the hill, was completely obscured.

The fence post is being driven in firmly with a drivel. With soil of chalk and flint, it's a back breaking job.
