Sinomicrurus macclellandi [MacClelland's Coral Snake]

New Territories, Hong Kong

April 2019

Taiwan

Toxicity: Highly venomous

Also known as 環紋赤蛇 (huan2wen2chi4she2)

MacClelland's Coral Snake is cathemeral (diurnal or nocturnal) and lives on montane forest floors, in stone cracks and among decayed plant matter. It is not aggressive, and very few reports of attacks by this snake have been recorded, but its venom contains strong neurotoxins which can be life-threatening. Little is known about its biology and ecology, but lizards and small snakes may be its staple foods.

Reproduction: Females produce 4-14 eggs in summer.

Cúc Phương National Park, Vietnam

I took a young Malaysian intern from a university in Pingtung to nearby Dahanshan. Hoping to find a hundred pacer snake, we were stunned to find a Sauter's coral snake (Sinomicrurus sauteri), a rare local endemic species. Here, he uses a plastic bag as a diffuser to take shots of it with his cell phone.

This was one of only four snakes that I found on an evening searching a quiet road through the mountains of Chiayi. The MacClelland's coral snake (Sinomicrurus macclellandi swinhoei) is an endemic subspecies in Taiwan and while hard to find, is probably not that rare. Unfortunately, it is small (but highly venomous) and lives a semi-fossorial life among leaf litter and stones where it's difficult to spot.

This was found during my 2nd herping trip in Taiwan.

Toxicity: Highly Venomous

Chinese name: 環紋赤蛇 (huan2wen2chi4she2)

Sinomicrurus is a genus of venomous elapids known as Oriental or Eastern Coral Snakes, three of which are endemic to Taiwan: S. hatori, S. sauteri and S. macclellandi.

Habits: MacClelland's Coral Snake is cathemeral (diurnal or nocturnal) and lives on montane forest floors, in stone cracks and among decayed plant matter.

Diet: lizards and small snakes may be its staple foods.

Reproduction: Females produce 4-14 eggs in summer.

Note:

Sinomicrurus is a compound word assembled from Sino, New Latin for "Chinese", and the Greek words mikros = small, and ura = tail; alluding to the short, pointy tails of this genus;

MacClelland's Coral Snake (Sinomicrurus macclellandi swinhoei) is a rare endemic subspecies in Taiwan. It is extremely slender and grows to less than a metre in length, spending its time among stones and leaf litter, making it very hard to find. This was the first one I'd seen for a couple of years and was spotted by my friend as we led a small group along a mountain road last week (I was spotting all the bamboo vipers and he was spotting all the good stuff !). Although it's tiny it has very potent venom, and outside of Taiwan has been known to kill incautious handlers.

As found crossing the road in Hunan, China

Although the temperature was only 17 C and we didn't expect to see much up in the mountains of Pingtung, we found 6 bamboo vipers (which seem impervious to the cold) and this juvenile coral snake (Sinomicrurus sauteri). My wife also found a sun-dried DOR even tinier one a few minutes later.
