I’m surprised Singularity didn’t have more of a buzz behind it. First I head of the game was CheapyD’s mentioned it on the CAGCast. He seemed to really dig it, and since he has yet to steer me wrong I decided to check it out for myself. After beating the game I can certainly see why Cheapy picked Singularity as his most surprising game of 2010.

Singularity offers a extremely well crafted experience with a lot of cool ideas that set it apart from the ‘glut of average’ that a lot of games fall into. I’d even go so far to say that Singularity is right up there with the original Bioshock in terms of experiences, sans the wonderful world of Rapture of course.

I found a lot of similarities between Singularity and Bioshock. One instance is the powers the game gives you to compliment your firearms, somewhat like plasmids in Bioshock. As you progress through the game you’ll find yourself with the abilities to freeze your enemies in time, turn them into mutants, or just reduce them to dust when you feel the need. Hell, you even end with a telekinesis-like ability but that’s more akin to Half Life’s gravity gun. You could probably plow through Singularity guns blazing - but using the tools the game gives you makes for a much more unique and fun experience.

In addition to using your powers on your foes, you’ll also need to use them to solve some light puzzles throughout the game. The puzzles aren’t very complex, but they do mix things up between the firefights.

My only complaints about Singularity are - first, the damn doors closing behind you. I like to explore my game worlds (even in FPS games ), but Singularity was a bitch when it came to this. So many times doors would just slam shut behind me preventing me from going around different corners to hunt for goodies.

My second complaint is a warning for achievement hunters - there is no level select in this game. That means if you miss an achievement during the campaign you will have to start from the beginning without being able to carry over your kill counts or upgrades. It’s not that terrible though, as I was able to blow through the game pretty quickly a second time playing on easy but its still a pretty ridiculous oversight.

Aside from those complaints I have nothing bad to say about Singularity. It’s a damn fine game, and well worth your time as well as a sequel. There’s a lot of shooting to be found, but there is also plenty more in the package to set Singularity apart from the run-of-the-mill lot.
