March 27th, 2009 - Initially, I wanted to get a shot of the tree and the shadow it cast on the ground as the sun was getting low on the sky, but it didn't really turn out how I wanted it to, so instead I made this shot of a single tree at the top of the hill.

Basra, 27 September 2016 – In the presence of the Vice Minister of Culture, of Antiquities and of Tourism Affairs Mr. Qais Rasheed, Basra Province Governor Dr. Majid al-Nasrawi, Chariman of the Provincial Council Mr. Sabah al-Bazouni, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG) Gyorgy Busztin, UNESCO Representative to Iraq Louise Haxthausen, numerous representatives of the political life and civil society groups and of the diplomatic corps an archaeology museum was opened today in Basra.
In the currently opened single hall, named Basra Hall, artefacts dating from 400 BC to 1800 AD are displayed. The objects tell the history of Basra as a commercial and cultural hub. Other halls will be opened in the future to showcase the civilizations that flourished in Mesopotamia, such as the Babylonians, Assyrians and the Sumerians - who date back to 3000 BC.
DSRSG Busztin said that “the opening of the museum highlights the importance of the conservation of the cultural heritage in a fast growing city like Basra, and the need to create a necessary balance between the past, present and future”.
He stressed that “in recent times, the rich cultural heritage of Iraq has suffered greatly. But today, we are here to celebrate and to acknowledge the courage and efforts of the Iraqis and the international cultural community, united to protect and enhance this unique heritage. Cultural heritage represents a source of identity, and is a powerful contributor to dialogue and to peace, to economic development and environmental protection”.
The Basra Museum project was jointly developed by the central and regional authorities in Basra, and the Friends of Basra Museum.
