Info from Gordon's son Donald Simpson on 21/04/2015:
Peter, I’m not sure there’s much I can add to the captions my father used on most of the photographs. Sutton Veny in the UK was where he was camped for a while while doing his signallers course; they have quite a good website www.suttonveny.co.uk/anzacs.html
Many of the pics are taken in Scotland, where he loved to spend his leave. Most of the Belgian ones would have been taken after the armistice, as he stayed there with the occupation forces until the middle of 1919 – he had his 21st birthday on the troop ship coming back to Australia in 1919.
“Front view of home” was the old family home on a smallholding outside Warwick. The smallholding was pretty well put out of business by the prickly pear plague that took over much of Queensland in the early 1900s. The family home on the smallholding was burnt down some time about the 1st world war (perhaps during the war) and the family moved into Warwick where my grandfather took as job driving delivery vans (probably horse-drawn) for Barnes & Co.. My father served his apprenticeship there as well.
If you have any specific questions about particular photos, I’ll do my best!
Don.

The Queen Anne style Simpson-Vance house was built in 1892. The house was built for James and Elizabeth Simpson and their large family. James was a contractor and builder in Eureka. He was also a skilled carpenter. In October of 1902, the house was sold to John M. Vance, the nephew of pioneer lumber baron John Vance. His wife Sarah lived in the house until her death in 1933 and then her daughter Etta lived there until her death in 1943. The property was then sold to Charles Hudson who was a Congregation Minister. In 1974 the State of California purchased the property as part of the right-of-way for the Eureka Highway. The project never happened and the State then sold the property to the Redwood Community Action Agency who completed a 5 year renovation in the house. The Simpson-Vance house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The magnificent octagonal corner tower was too tall for me to fit into my camera's lens so I made an exception and took what I could get!
