Thomas Henry Simpson was a Detroit industrialist who died from pernicious anemia. In his memory, his widow Catherine MacDonald Simpson donated this Albert Kahn-designed building, built in 1927.

This Wallace Anderson sculpture is dedicated in honour of the valour and compassion of the Australian soldier. It embodies John Simpson Kirkpatrick, a stretcher bearer who used a donkey to expedite his work. Simpson and his donkey, Duffy, worked alone day and night, carrying the wounded to dressing stations and water to the frontline.
I have used this photograph to depict an excerpt from the poem, "Simpson & His Donkey" by David Smith White, which you can see more clearly when Viewed On Black
Frank Simpson (1863-1942) was an authority on the history of Chester. He was a keen amateur photographer and his published works include "A History of the Church of St. Peter in Chester" (1909), "The Walls of Chester" (1910) and articles in the Journal of the Chester Archaeological Society. Frank Simpson became a freeman of Chester at the age of 21 and was later admitted to the Skinners and Feltmakers Company. He was president of the Chester Guilds in 1940. Frank Simpson became a member of the Chester Archaeological Society in 1902 and was elected to the Council of the Society in 1905. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians in 1913. During the First World War, Frank Simpson took an active interest in the Volunteer movement and was a lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
