History of the The Silver King Hotel (aka The Florence Hotel)

The Silver King Hotel in Florence, Arizona was built in 1876 by William Long, who was a partner in the Silver King Mine. The actual mine was 35 miles away, near the current town of Globe, Arizona. Florence was the nearest well-established town to the mine at that time, so the mine headquarters were set up in Florence. The lure of silver created an influx of wealth-seekers coming to town hoping to make their fortune. Mr. Long decided to diversify beyond mining and built both the hotel and a dry-goods store in Florence. Photo by Tom

Silver Oak (Grevillea robusta A.Cunn. ex R.Br.) blooming Palampur area of Himachal Pradesh.

Higher Hyde Heath DWT. The silver-studded blue emerges in June and is usually on the wing until late August. It is a rare butterfly, generally found in heathland habitats that have shorter, sparsely vegetated areas. It is restricted to close-knit colonies in southern England and Wales. Two subspecies can be found in its range, while two others are now extinct in the UK. The larvae feed on a wide variety of plants, such as bell heather, cross-leaved heath and gorses.

~With the stems broken, ready to fall to the ground, germinate and start a new life.~

Fascinating is the plant that can visually hook gardeners, not with fancy foliage nor flashy flowers, but rather dried seed pods—those faded leftovers of a glorious growing season. Well, welcome to the strangely fascinating world of lunaria (Lunaria annua) also known as silver dollar plant or money plant because of the round, parchment-like seed casings it produces in late summer that have the shimmer of freshly minted silver coins.

This species and the idas blue P. idas, pose plenty of identification issues. Both species are widespread and often common. Variation between individuals and colonies is marked in both species, with plenty of overlap possible.

Identification & Similar species: Separation is sure with the one character which is constant - the male foreleg tibia has a hook in the current species which is never present in P. idas. Other characters offer guidance for separating the males. The upperside male black border is fine and the upperside hindwing space 7 largely blue in P. idas the border often much broader and space 7 lacks blue in P. argus.

Silver Falls State Park, Marion County, Oregon. Close up of the bottom half of the lower South Falls. This park is a waterfall lover's dream with ten falls over an 8.7 mile stretch of looping trails. We visited a little past peak foliage and it was just a quick stop on the way back to Portland, but still plenty of color in the trees and along the trail. Only visited two of the falls but from what we saw this place is definitely worth a visit of a few days or more.

Coins are used infrequently nowadays as most of us rely on notes or card payments but in the past, they were very important, particularly gold and silver coins.

This is a history of the 20th Century Kings and Queens of England in silver coins. The first two are silver rupees from India, followed by two Australian silver threepences and finishing with Canadian silver dollar!

A Roman hoard containing 203 silver coins, and a few pieces of gold jewellery, all stashed in a piece of pottery. Found in the area in 1993.

Taken in August in Abisko national park. I could feel the autumn around the corner, some leaves had started to turn yellow and the morning and evenings had that fresh cool air.

A moody day at Silver Lake in Southern Washington. In the distance rain clouds engulf the active volcano Mount St. Helens. In 1980 the volcano experienced a major explosive eruption killing scores of people and reducing over a 100 square miles to wasteland. But on this day all was quiet. It was quite hard to believe that anything could disrupt this beautifully serene spring-time scene.
