The star attraction of the Barsey Rhododentron sanctuary however, is the rhododendron. Out of the total 1000 or so varieties of this evergreen tree, 600 alone can be found at Barsey.

Just a small example of the rhododendrons that flower in this sanctuary. Can you imagine all the trees in yesterday's image covered in blooms of all colours?

Sikkim is a state in northeast India, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of the Himalayas, the area has a dramatic landscape that includes India’s highest mountain, 8,586m Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is also home to glaciers, alpine meadows and thousands of varieties of wildflowers. Steep paths lead to hilltop Buddhist monasteries such as Pemayangtse, which dates to the early 1700s.

Took this photo on our way to Lachung from Gangtok.

An old shot, taken on 2008 when I visited Sikkim.

Banjhakri Falls, Gangtok, Sikkim - India

Sikkim is a state in northeastern India. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region of China in the north and northeast, Bhutan in the east, Nepal in the west, and West Bengal in the south. Sikkim is also close to the Siliguri Corridor, which borders Bangladesh. Sikkim is the least populous and second smallest among the Indian states. Situated in the Eastern Himalaya, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and third highest on Earth. Sikkim's capital and largest city is Gangtok. Almost 35% of the state is covered by the Khangchendzonga National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Wikipedia)

Yuksom is an historic town in the West Sikkim district of Sikkim. It was the first capital of Kingdom of Sikkim established in 1642 AD by Phuntsog Namgyal who was the first Chogyal (temporal and religious king) of Sikkim. (Wikipedia)

Incredibly beautiful, Sikkim is full of amazing mountain views. Steep, switchback roads too steep or narrow for buses and trucks connect the villages and towns. Farming and housing occurs on terraces cut into the mountain sides. The people are welcoming and the food is delicious.

This is the largest monastery in Sikkim situated near the capital city Gangtok at an altitude of around 4900 feet.Originally built in the 1700s .It was rebuilt by the 16th Karmapa who arrived in India in 1959 as his main seat in exile. His remains are contained in a Golden stupa here.

On the day we visited the resident monks were rehearsing for some function to be held the next day so I got a few interesting shots.

Might be worth a look in large.

I am suffering from severe cervical spondylosis and my doctor has asked me to keep away from the computer and phone for some time.So I will be mostly off for about a fortnight my friends.:-(See you all soon and take care.

Sikkim. Kanchenjunga.

This mountain peak has been considered the most beautiful in the world, not for this view ,but for the view of its northeast face ( www.caingram.com/India/Himalaya/sikkim_siniolchu_4w.jpg) as seen from the Greenlake in north Sikkim. Out of three main flanges two are visible in this pic.

A pretty village, situated on both banks of the Lachung River, Lachung is an ideal place for nature lovers. Quiet, serene, beautiful, Lachung is everything that a visitor requires of a place. Lachung literally means ‘Small Pass’, which it indeed is as it is situated in the close proximity to Tibet border. The Lachung Gompa is the major attraction of the town, whereas, a short distance from here is Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary that is also a must see

In the memory of Sikkim

I had to put her to sleep today. She had a mammary tumor at an advanced state. She was dying. She would have been 10 years old in next April. I haven't any photo of her...
