This is the first in what I hope will be a series of photos of geographically inaccurate maps of the Hawaiian islands. It's not simplification I'm annoyed by: the absence of Pearl Harbor is not all that bad, although odd given the detailed inclusion of the Mokapu Peninsula. It's more to do with the poor treatment of the islands themselves.
This is not a particularly bad one, but it was the first I found with camera in hand. First off, it has all eight islands, which is automatically better than some I've seen. Most of the islands are well-placed. There are, however, two notable exceptions.
The first is one of the more common I've seen and which I'll call the Niʻihau Shift. For some reason, people like moving Ni'ihau around, and in this case, it's migrated maybe 25 miles east and 5 miles south to tuck under Kauaʻi. What's odd is that the signmaker had plenty of room to keep Niʻihau in its proper place.
I would guess most people don't really notice the Niʻihau Shift because so few people live or visit the island. But the second problem affects more people: Molokaʻi has been rotated about 30º! My guess is that they did this so the island wouldn't be blocked by the E in Hooser, but they could have just moved the island chain up to solve that problem.

Open in Cullman since 1938, the restaurant was originally meant to have been called "All Steak Hamburgers" but there wasn't enough money to pay the signmaker for the word 'hamburgers', so it was just left as the "All Steak". It's *the* place in Cullman - this picture is at it's newer location - the older location was just a block away, and it had two sections, a front section that was more of a diner atmosphere, and a back with low-lighting and white tablecloths. Growing up in Cullman, it was a right of passage when the waitresses didn't automatically assume because of your age that you'd be sitting in front. A Cullman classic, don't leave without having an orange roll (or two).
DId you know that there is ONE person who does ALL the hand written signs for the whole festival? Her name is Nan Parati. Her signs are almost as cool as she is. Now you know.

Former garage, signmakers, lawnmower hire shop and whatever it was before that, now forlorn and empty on Gainsborough's Beamont Street.
A Flordia signmaker recently did some color Connecticut shields. This US 5 is a very good replica of what was actually used on the highway.
To the actual sign this replica was made from, click the link.
