A rather rare sighting here in my area of West Virginia. We usually only see them in Fall and Spring on migration. Even more rare is finding one in the neighborhood, which is where I shot this fellow. I was driving up my street slowly along the river (the first two blocks of my street run along the West Fork River) when I noticed him across it, slowly wading and hunting. I sat and strained my eyes a moment to make sure it wasn’t a Great Blue Heron, that I was seeing it correctly. (Probably should get glasses.) I drove home, unloaded the Outback of groceries, put my Nikon and 200-500 mm lens on, drove back down . . . and he was gone. I drove up and down my street a couple of times and finally spotted him, close to where he was when I first saw him, across the river behind a daycare facility. He had just turned around and was heading back up. I parked in front of the daycare, walked behind, let the shutter go at it. This is the best of the bunch, and I have a few more to post down the road.

I took a couple photos of a bird yesterday I just cannot ID. I’ll post them maybe later tonight. I don’t want them to get in the way of my regular posts.

This one is a must-see in Lightbox, mostly because of the way I cropped it (I usually crop to size). Thanks for Viewing.

On the third day in Bridgetown, early in the morning, a person from the ship's support agency arrives and takes me to the port. dock area for cruise ships. As I see her it's love at first sight, I really want to take a photo right away, but it would be indelicate, so I get on board, introduce myself to the Chief Officer who I will have to replace and take care of all the paperwork, also getting to know the ship that I didn't know (my first time on board a sailing ship) Only towards sunset I can take 5 minutes to go ashore and immortalise her. Sailing ships are more beautiful in the open sea, with their sails unfurled and billowing in the wind. Moored at the quay, as well as anchored in the harbor, the sails are gathered up and almost invisible. But I look at her and my heart beats faster

A Louisville-bound Indiana Railroad freight was passing through Bedford on a hot humid day. This was one of the final INRD moves to Louisville before the traffic was shifted to the Louisville and Indiana and this trackage was abandoned.

Going back to this location, you'd never know a railroad once ran here. At least that homeowner got a larger yard.

This is now the Milwaukee Road Transportation Trailway.

Quite surprised to find this lone nymph on Kidney vetch (I think) on the dunes at Holywell Bay, with no Gorse or Broom in sight!! Having said that, Piezodorus lituratus is known to feed on many types of Fabaceae!

Silhouettes

Seems an appropriate one for Halloween - we saw the big guy wandering around in Crescent City bold as brass and in broad daylight!

I noticed today it is nine months since I posted a picture of my favourite boat. How time flies. This was from may 2019 when I spent a few days in the Scottish Highlands.

Last May (2019) I spent some time in the Scottish Highlands which meant I had to go and see my favourite boat; the MV Dayspring.

Here she is shot in sunny weather with Ben Nevis in the background. She has been in this position since she foundered during a bad storm on December 8th 2011 on the shore near Corpach in the Scottish Highlands. The tide has never been high enough since to re-float the boat so she remains here stuck on land rotting away. She is still privately owned.

You all know how I love to photograph this boat. It is a sad but beautiful sight to me. I have become very attached to this boat. To me it has become part of the landscape here.

Here is some of her history

for the Smile on Saturday challenge "music in B+W"

I couldn't resist this week's challenge! I love music, especially classical music. I used to play the clarinet, and now there's just a recorder and a fife in the house to remind me - and plenty of sheet music (arranged primarily for piano). Together with the joke tea towel with dozens of musical puns and expressions.

My second sighting of this species of Masked Bee. I am hoping they will settle and set up a colony here.

Dad, I got a bead on Putin. Now, how do you start this thing?

"Clancy, he'll do himself in eventually."

Long live Ukraine.

"Long live Ukraine."

(Waiting for snow is the hardest thing to do, so hard I almost started a war with Russia all by myself out of frustration. Damn you Putin, and damn you global warming. When Dad was a kid he was at the outdoor skating rinks every Christmas day trying out new hockey gear. These days it's 50-50 that we'll even have a white Christmas. Take it to the streets, take it to your leaders, do your own part, and let's reverse this problem before we get to the point where nothing else will matter.)
