Space Shuttle Endeavour flies over San Francisco for one last time.

Endeavour, carried piggyback atop a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet, does a last flight en route to its final frontier and retirement home: a science museum in Los Angeles.

Space Shuttle Endeavour

Based on information I gleaned while posting the linked photo, this is OV-103 some time between November 6 & 8, 1983, while at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB). Discovery arrived there November 6 from Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB) and departed November 8, 1983, enroute to Carswell Air Force Base as part of her delivery to KSC on November 9, 1983.

In this well-composed & rare photo, the Orbiter/Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) combination is seen at the Orbiter Lifting Fixture (OLF), a scaled-down version of the Mate-Demate Device (MDD) used at EAFB. At the time, NASA and the Department of Defense planned to fly space shuttles, with Discovery as the designated orbiter, from Vandenberg’s Space Launch Complex-6 (SLC-6) on military polar orbital missions, beginning with STS-62A in 1986.

Note the white color of the SCA, with a single blue stripe. The original American Airlines livery was repainted to this before flying to the May 1983 Paris Air Show.

I think that’s the red Ingersoll-Rand logo on the side of the pushback tractor.

Lastly, the kinda softish Airman in the lower left foreground, possibly on a walkie-talkie. I hope he wasn’t providing physical security.

Space Shuttle Discovery flew for the last time today piggy-backed on NASA 905. The shuttle flew a short trip to Virginia to be displayed at the Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The shuttle and the shuttle carrier aircraft are seen here making a final low pass over the Shuttle Landing Facility runway at the Kennedy Space Center before departing. “SISTER SALUTE -- The space shuttle Endeavour receives a high-flying salute from its sister shuttle, Columbia, atop NASA’s Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, shortly after its landing Oct. 12, 1994, At Edwards, Calif., to complete mission STS-68. Columbia was being ferried from the Kennedy Spaced Center, Fla., to Air Force Plant 42, Palmdale, Calif., where it will undergo six months of inspections, modifications, and systems upgrades. The STS-68 11-day mission was devoted to radar imaging of Earth’s geological features with the Space Radar Laboratory. The orbiter is surrounded by equipment and personnel that make up the ground support convoy that services the space vehicles as soon as they land.”

Astro 905 over the eastern end of runway 25 at LAX. Note that all 3 rooftops have people on them watching the fly by. Every rooftop in sight was the same. An American Airlines jet waiting to take off was holding short of runway 25 for the Shuttle, the tower called the jet and apologized for the departure delay-- the pilot came back, 'no problem, we've got the best seats in the house.' Everybody knew this was a once in a lifetime experience.

So, this day (Jan 5th) was a Day In History for the Golden Gate Bridge. Jan 05, 1933 was the date the Golden Gate Bridge was born (or created). These images are NASA's tribute. ENJOY!

at its prime, this thing was orbiting the earth at 25x speed of sound. now it's retiring at the old age of 25 and it has to ride on something that can barely do 0.8x. it must be how old people feel like when they are stuck on a wheelchair.

When I heard about the last flight of the Space Shuttle doing a flyover at Disneyland, it was hard to pass up the chance to view it there. However I knew the best view was going to be at LAX so I left San Diego at 5am and drove up to LAX to join the massive crowd of people hoping to catch one last glimpse of the Space Shuttle in flight.

I always wanted to see a Space Shuttle launch in Florida but because of the unreliability of launch dates and times, it was near impossible to plan a trip across country to see it. And I'm also kicking myself for not making an effort to see the Space Shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base since it was just a few hours up the road. So this was my first and ONLY chance to see the Space Shuttle fly. What an incredible sight it was, seeing the SCA (Shuttle Carrier Aircraft) carry Space Shuttle Endeavour on it's back for a tour of Los Angeles. At the airport, they treated us to two very low passes over the airfield and from my vantage point, this offered a view at near eye level. It was a touching moment, knowing I'm looking at the last time any Space Shuttle will be in the skies above Earth.

The Orbiter 101 "Enterprise" soars above the NASA 747 carrier aircraft during the second Free Flight during the Shuttle Approach and Landing (ALT) tests. Free Flight 2 took place on September 13, 1977, at Dryden Flight Research Center (now the Armstrong Flight Research Center) in California.

“SHUTTLE ALT CAPTIVE INERT FLIGHT-----The Shuttle Orbiter 101 “Enterprise” is seen riding “piggy-back” atop the NASA 747 during the first of six Approach and Landing Test unmanned, inert Orbiter flights made at the Dryden Flight Research Center in Southern California on February 18, 1977. This picture was taken by a photographer riding in a T-38 chase plane which was flying on the right and alongside the 747/Orbiter. Specially installed support struts hold the Orbiter onto the larger, carrier aircraft. The purpose of this flight was to obtain evaluation of the low speed performance and handling qualities. The tailcone on the Orbiter is an aerodynamic fairing to reduce buffeting on the 747 tail surface. The 747/Orbiter is flying at about 16,000 feet altitude. This first captive, inert flight of the Orbiter was about 2 hours and 8 minutes in duration.”

So, the very first time that OV-101 "took flight".
