This ancient Slavic holiday is good — seeing off the winter — with tables that are bursting with pancakes and other dishes and drinking. These days, the Slavic soul is wide open, a person walks with might and main. I wish that your Carnival went like clockwork. With a generous merry Carnival!I congratulate everyone on the end of the cold winter, on our ancient holiday — Maslenitsa! May the Shrovetide abundance and satiety not leave your home throughout the year! Warm sun, sweet pancakes, friendship and harmony to all!....
So I am the king of Shrovetide today. Sunday the 26th of February is the Shrovetide day in Denmark, it the a childrens celebration day, where children are dresses up in various costumes and have a tradition of "hit the cat out of the barrel" but today the barrel is now not containing a cat as in earlier times, but candy or fruit; and the children hit the barrel up to i breaks and the candy / fruit falls out, and the child that make the final touch is the " king"
But I was not allowed to play with the same barrel, so I was out at look for a cat and a barrel filled the nice bones which I could play with ; but I did not find any, but I found my golden crown
Pancake Day has been celebrated in Britain for centuries as the feast day before Ash Wednesday, when the fasting season begins.
Historically, Anglo-Saxon Christians would go to confession on Shrove Tuesday to be absolved of their sins, before indulging in rich fat-based foods to use up ingredients ahead of Lent.
However, it is believed that the Christian Pancake Day was in fact borrowed from an old pagan festival to welcome the arrival of spring. Circular, hot pancakes were seen to symbolise the sun, providing those who ate them with the sun’s power and strength.
Shrove Tuesday originates from the Old English word ‘shrive’, which means to give absolution once hearing confession, usually by a priest. The day marks the end of Pre-Lenten Season, also known as Shrovetide.
This year, Shrove Tuesday falls on February 13, but the exact date of Pancake Day changes year on year as it is determined by when Easter falls – which can also differ annually due to the spring equinox.
Shrove Tuesday is always celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, which takes place 40 days before Easter to represent Jesus’ 40 days spent fasting in the desert.

The annual Alnwick Shrovetide football match, has taken place between the rival parishes of St. Michael and St. Paul since 1762. Apparently it is one of only five ancient football games still played in the country.
This year's event was blessed by sunshine, though it could hardly be described as being warm. (7C feeling like 4C according to Strava).
"Football" is a very loose description since there are no real rules, the sides each have at least 30 or 40 players (male and female), there's no referee or umpire, though there are 2 'officials' by the goals at each end of the pitch to judge if a goal has been scored or the ball has gone beyond the goal for a 'goal-kick'. The pitch is about 400 yards long with the river a boundary on one side, there's a natural slope on the other which sort of acts as the other boundary.
The match is won when one of the teams scores two 'hales' or goals ie gets the ball between the posts which are decorated with greenery and are taller than they are wide. And the 'pitch' on the pastures opposite Alnwick Castle is the grazing ground for sheep and cattle for a good part of the year & can be pretty wet in February (it was waterlogged this year!), which all adds to the fun.
There's not a lot going on in this shot as a 'hale' had just been scored and the ball is in the hands of an official (seen in a red hat just to the left of the red & yellow Northumberland flag), prior to the teams swapping ends before the re-start.
If anyone is still reading, this year's match was won by St. Michael's 2-1 (a pity since we live in the St. Paul's part of the town!).

A market town, its market charter was granted in 1257
Located 14 miles west of Derby, near the southern edge of the Peak District.
It is the closest town to Dovedale, and is often referred to as The Gateway to Dovedale.
The town sits at the start of the Tissington Trail footpath, which makes it popular with walkers and cyclists.
Ashbourne has more than 200 listed buildings. Of particular interest are the Old Grammar School, the reputedly longest inn sign in the world, located outside The Green Man & Black's Head Royal Hotel, and the beautiful St Oswald's Parish Church with its striking 212 feet high spire.
The town is famous for its ancient tradition of Royal Shrovetide Football. The game is played each Shrovetide Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. It's a unique and unruly event that bears little resemblance to the modern game!

The Green Man & Black's Head Royal Hotel
A famous Georgian coaching inn, circa 18th century.
The sign over the road was constructed in 1825 when the Green Man and the Blackmoor Inn were joined
The sign was Grade II listed in 1951, and updated to Grade II* in 1974.
The gallows-type sign is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest inn sign in the world.
It was damaged by a lorry strike in 2006, but subsequently repaired.
The original sign featured an effigy of a black man's head.

In June 2020, during the George Floyd protests, a 28,000-signature petition called for the head to be taken down, describing it as "disgusting racist imagery".
Derbyshire Dales District Council said it would remove the head as soon as possible, but locals removed it the same day, saying they had done so to protect it from vandalism, adding it would be restored with "a lick of black paint" and reinstalled at a later date.
The council, however, decided against replacing the controversial head, and its future currently remains undecided.
Grade ll* listed.

I did the shoot today with this lovely beauty named Milena. Only two years old. We were at the square where people were celebrating the Pancake week. Nobody could pass over our model :) Everybody took photos of her. Milena, being a brave model, did her best, paying no attention at exterior photographers! But at the end she asked: 'Why does everyone laugh at me?'

This picture I took at Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht (shrovetide) in Gengenbach (a town in the margins of the Black Forest, Germany) over a decade ago
At that time we went to a lot of Shrovetide events to take photos of the beautiful masks and figures
This is the very friendly figure "Strohhansel" (Straw Hansel) with a wooden mask (called: Larve) handing out sweets to children
