Taken at the time of the St Pauls' Afro Caribbean Carnival going on in the area, so people are much more open and friendly than normal... and enterprising shopkeepers set up tables outside their shops to grab more customers. This scene shows outside and inside his shop... I love the kids playing just inside...

Rejection Reasons

Imagery for the editorial market should depict the diversity of human culture worldwide showing people and places with cultural context. We are not looking for unreleased images of a generic nature that show no cultural reference, or unaccompanied minors. We also cannot accept images of limited access or permission required locations, images shot on private properties without consent, or news/event-based coverage. The images fail to meet these guidelines.

A little scene I happened upon one day in Paris. We were watching a film crew on one side of the court, when I spotted this shopkeeper getting ready for the day. I loved the little shop, reflections and all. If you look closely, you’ll see my “monsieur” in a white shirt and ball cap, and Yours Truly beside him, iPhone camera in hand....

I bought an ice lolly from this lovely lady - it was most welcome!

Shopkeeper in Chitral, in the North-west Frontier Province.

Street trading is actually illegal in Hanoi but you would never know - more of the shop is on the pavement than inside the building! I was amused by the random chicken wandering around - they are literally everywhere in south east Asia

A shopkeeper and her friends in Sao Joao del Rei, Brazil are just taking it easy.

I saw these figurines all over Sao Joao del Rei and Tiradentes, and really liked them, but it wasn't until several years later that I found out they are called "flirts", and have a rich history of their own around Minas Gerais.

When the shopkeeper saw me taking pictures, he came out and asked me, 'What are you taking pictures of? '

'I take pictures of street scenes. ' I replied.

'Oh, street scenes... I thought you were a spy. ' The shopkeeper said.

'A spy? Where did the spy come from?' I thought it was very absurd.

'There are a lot of spies out there now. ' the shopkeeper replied affirmatively.

For these years, the authorities have been promoting the idea that there are many spies working for foreign countries in China, encouraging people to report suspected spies, and the Beijing authorities have even offered a reward of 500,000 RMB for this, so that the Chinese now use the jocular phrase 'a walking half million' to refer to a spy. The shopkeeper did not want to report me, nor did he really believe that I was a spy, but merely used the charge of espionage to scare me. What he was more worried about was that I might be in the service of the government.

It was a dull day yet his white hair glowed so brightly.....

I have had so little time for taking photos, for much of anything creative.

Environmental excursion to Arnea Halkidiki mid February.Early morning awake with light snow and minus .... enough!I sacrifice the warmth and the breakfast of the hotel for a walk in the Macedonian traditional mountain village before waking up the children and signaling departure. This particular mansion had "stapled" it from a historical magazine in Thessaloniki "Grrek Panorama".My photographic "bonus" is the shopkeeper who has just opened the old family business and is waiting at the threshold for "sefte"(handsel).

In this humble shop, a portrait of Mao hangs from a beam. For many Chinese, Mao has become a kind of household deity, believed to possess protective powers if one shows him proper reverence. Yet the irony lingers: were Mao still alive, the owner of this very shop would never have been permitted to live or work in Shanghai, let alone rent a space and run a private business. Perhaps the shopkeeper’s red devotion is less than devout — and fittingly, the whole shop seems to have faded into a softer, almost pink hue.

The vast majority of the buildings in the neighbourhood where it is located have been acquired and will be demolished, and it is only a matter of time before it closes and is demolished.

This is a blind woman who keeps a shop at the front of her home in a tiny village nearby, on he island of Java, Indonesia.

I'm not sure what combination of light and focus made the picture come straight out of the camera like this, but I liked the slightly abstract "primitive" look, the bright colors, and, for me, the story line - how this woman makes a living, despite her handicap!. There is a second image below in the comment box.

A friendly shopkeeper, I have seen this guy on a couple of occasions when visiting Marrakech, such an interesting face!

I uploaded an earlier copy of this I made from a print. I just had my film digitized for the first time so this is a new and better image.
