As part of the deal a new theatre, the Dolman, was constructed as part of the development in 1967 - making this year their 50th anniversary. It was designed by the architectural practice of Shoolheifer & Burley. The auditorium is at 1st floor level and has a very spacious foyer / bar. It seats 400 on a single well raked level, has an orchestra pit and a 40ft x 32ft stage with a counterweight grid in the fly tower. There is also a 60 seat studio theatre. It was initially equipped as a cinema, one of the first of the regional BFI venues, and the build cost was estimated as £190,000.

Land-Rover Model 80 Production Number One (27th July 1948)
This vehicle is where the Land Rover story began: the first ever production Land Rover. Owned by the company originally for two years, it then passed into private ownership and did steady agricultural duty from then on. In 2017 it was bought by INEOS Automotive, which is in the process of bringing the Grenadier 4x4 to market now, which in styling and purpose hopes it to be a spiritual successor as Land Rover’s new Defender heads in a more commercial and lifestyle direction. This vehicle has been restored to return it to as much of its original condition as possible.

Land Rover Series One
Chassis No. 860001
JUE 477, 1948
JUE 477 holds a unique place in the history of British motor manufacturing, being the first production Land Rover in a series that would last 70 years to date. Chassis number one (860001) has been hidden from view for almost 20 years, until now…
This 80-inch Land Rover was ‘dispatched’ in July 1948 before being immediately signed over to a member of the Land Rover development programme, remaining within the Solihull site in much the same way as pre-production number seven and HUE 166 (Huey), the world’s oldest Land Rover.
It was not registered for road use until 1950, being bought by a Newcastle University Professor in the February. Over the following 20 years, JUE 477 changed hands just once before being purchased by Mr David Fairless – a trip to buy a tractor resulting in the acquisition of chassis number one instead.
After using the Series One on his Northumberland farm for a time, 860001 was eventually parked up. Continued speculation and interest as to its whereabouts and condition led Mr Fairless to briefly reveal the vehicle at a celebration of Land Rover’s 50th birthday at Shugborough Hall in 1998.
Following the interest generated by its appearance, JUE 477 was then moved out of the public eye into a barn on the family farm until the decision was taken in 2017 to seek a new owner and guarantee its long-term future.
Chassis number 860001 will now be subject to a carefully considered restorative process that retains the remarkable history, original components and unique details.
Rolling off the Solihull-factory production line on July 27, 1948, JUE 477 lays claim as the first production Land Rover; not to be confused with HUE 166 – Land Rover’s kept ‘first example'.
HUE 166 is actually the first of a batch of 48 prototypes. 'Huey' has a chassis number of LR1, but is still a test vehicle (not the first production Land Rover as popularly claimed), rolling out of the factory on March 11, 1948.
HUE 166 may be the oldest surviving Land Rover, but is not chassis number one. JUE 477 is chassis number 860001. Therefore, it's undoubtedly the oldest production Land Rover.
First ever production Land-Rover restored and revealed
Thu 27 Aug 2020
The world’s first ever production Land-Rover is to be revealed following its restoration after decades spent exposed to the elements on a Northumberland farm.
Land-Rover 860001, known by its registration of JUE 477, will be unveiled by INEOS Automotive on Friday 4 September at the Hampton Court Concours of Elegance, and remain on display in the Concours line-up over the three days of the event, September 4-6. INEOS is the company behind the all-new Grenadier 4x4.
As the forefather not just to Land Rovers but also to the global family of 4x4s that has served emergency services, armed forces, explorers, farmers and many more, it's fair to think of JUE 477 as one of the most important vehicles of all time.
JUE 477 was originally intended for His Majesty King George VI but following its unveilng it was dispatched into the Rover Company factory on 19 July 1948, and later found its way to a Northumberland farmer, who used it for many years before abandoning it on the farm's remote moorland, where it spent decades exposed to the wild weather.
It was later moved to a leaky, tumbledown stone barn in 1998. In 2017 it was acquired by INEOS and briefly shown at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London. JUE then went into what became a deeply complex restoration, with the aim of retaining as much originality as possible – right to the point of leaving the paintwork in as-found condition, because that represents so much of its history.
The restoration was carried out over 18 months in top secret for INEOS Automotive overseen by early Land-Rover specialist Julian Shoolheifer, fully documented by Land-Rover expert Martin Port and authenticated by Keeper Emeritus at the Science Museum, Andrew Nahum. Both gave the fully-restored car their seal of approval, confirming that JUE 477 remains almost as original today as it did when assembled in 1948.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the founder and chairman of INEOS, said, “Restoring a vehicle of this importance requires enormous skill. Wherever possible, we decided from the outset that we wanted to keep as much of the original vehicle as was physically possible. It was absolutely crucial to this project that the car retained a huge amount of its original DNA and so every square inch of metal, every nut, bolt or fixing and every layer of paint that could be saved and incorporated into the restored vehicle, was.
"It was a huge challenge to bring JUE 477 back to life – a challenge that was documented throughout at a forensic level. The team were determined to keep the car as original as possible and because of this, the Land-Rover still bears its original battle scars. I think it looks absolutely fantastic.”

#IneosGrenadier vs. Its #LeadingCompetitors occupy different cognitive regions. Do you want a SUV with a Land Rover badge, or an uncompromising #Grenadier4x4 that is closer to the original 1948 Land Rover #JUE477, the first ever production Land Rover #860001, acquired by INEOS in 2017 and restored by Julian #Shoolheifer (Patina Preservation Restauration). Asked to describe the Grenadier and its performance, Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: 'It will end up 80 per cent Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, but at half the price’.
How much will the Ineos Grenadier cost? It seems certain the Grenadier will undercut £42,920, that is the starting price of the new Land Rover Defender. The Defender is available in three specification packs, DEFENDER, DEFENDER S (+ £4,015) and DEFENDER SE (+ £3,370). Probably will INEOS reveal the Grenadier also in three levels, for instance like the electric MINI: Level 1 ‘Keep things simple and iconic’, Level 2 ‘Level 1 kit plus extra technology, increased comfort’ (+ £2,000) and Level 3 ‘High specification; everything in level 2 with more customization’ (+ £4,000).
