Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) Museum

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and busiest railway station. Formerly named Victoria Terminus, it was built between 1878 and 1887 in the Victorian Italian Gothic style. The design was modelled after London's St. Pancras Stationlliam Stevens, based on an initial design by Axel Haig. The station's roof features church-like by Frederick Wispires and an impressive gothic-style central dome.

Murud Janjira is a fort and tourist attraction located on an island just off the coastal town of Murud in Raigad district of the state of Maharashtra, India.

The fort was originally just a wooden structure built in the 15th century by Kolis (local fisherman) to live peacefully away from the threat of pirates.Later it was captured by the Ahmednagar Sultanate of southern India. In 1567 a solid rock fortress was built by Malik Ambar, a regent of the Sultanate who was of Abyssinian descent.

Susequently the fort was lost to the Sidis, a unique tribe of African ancestory, who originally came to the Indian subcontinent through the slave trade or as merchants, sailors or mercenaries.

Due to its strategic location on a bustling maritime trade route, Murud Janjira fort was throughout its chequered history coveted by various powers like the Marathas,The Mughals or the Portuguese. The Marathas under Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj made several attempts to capture it but failed.

The fort is built on an oval shaped rock, off the Arabian Sea coast near the town of Murud, 165 kms south of Mumbai. It is considered one of the strongest coastal forts of India. The main gate of the fort can be seen when one is only about 40 feet away from it.It has 26 artillery towers which are still intact, some of them with ancient rusting canons. In its heydey, the fort had all facilities including barracks, quarters for officers, a mosque, 2 fresh water ponds and also a palace for the Nawabs which is still in pretty good shape.

The fort is now a tourist attraction and can be visited by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty.A slightly precarious journey but well worth the effort.

The fort might be visible better in large.

This is ruins of Raigad fort. Shivaji Maharaj seized the fort in 1656, then known as the fort of Rairi from Chandraraoji More, The King of Jawali. He renovated and expanded the fort of Rairi and renamed it as Raigad (King's Fort). It became the capital of Shivaji Maharaj's Maratha Empire. Walking through this vast fort at one corner these towers reminded me of Gandalf of Lord of the Rings. The tower in which he was impresioned but Saruman was Orthanc.

Orthanc was the black, impenetrable tower of Isengard built by the Dúnedain. By the Great Years and the War of the Ring, it was controlled by the wizard Saruman the White. It stood in the center of the Ring of Isengard, surrounded by great defensive walls fortified by the early Men of Gondor.

The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) headquarters, an iconic structure in South Mumbai, is a stunning example of Indo-Gothic architecture. Completed in 1893, this heritage building stands opposite the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (erstwhile Victoria) Terminus and serves as the administrative hub for Mumbai's civic body. Its grand facade, adorned with intricate stone carvings, domes, and spires, reflects the city's colonial past while symbolizing the seat of municipal governance.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, (CSMVS) originally named Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is a museum in Mumbai (Bombay) which documents the history of India from prehistoric to modern times.[3]

Formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, this Indo-Saracenic structure in Fort was designed by George Wittet and is easily among the most beautiful buildings in the entire city. Step inside the impressive building and you'll find a host of treasures: pottery harking back to the Indus valley, handcrafted Buddhist sculptures from the Maurya Empire, fine latticework on Mughal-era jewellery boxes and more.

Shivaji Maharaj, the mighty Maratha warrior was crowned Chatrapati, the emperor, over these hills, Raigarh fort. He ruled his kingdom here, planned his battles against the British and Mughals and also breathed his last at this fort.

The ascent is steep... like crazy steep. Observe, there are no supporting poles in between...

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture. The building, designed by the British architect F. W. Stevens, became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the major international mercantile port of India. The terminal was built over 10 years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay.

Shivaji Bhosle (19 February 1630 – 3 April 1680), with the royal title Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a Maratha king from the Bhosle dynasty who founded the Maratha empire. Shivaji led a resistance to free the Marathas from Sultanate of Bijapur, and establish the rule of the natives ("Hindavi Swarajya"). He created an independent Maratha kingdom with Raigad as its capital, and fought with the Mughals to defend his kingdom successfully.[6] He was crowned as Chhatrapati of the Maratha Kingdom in 1674.

He achieved the re-establishment of Maratha rule on their homeland after being ruled and dominated by various Muslim dynasties for few hundred years. He established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of well regulated and disciplined military and well structured administrative organizations. The prevalent practices of treating women as war booty, destruction of religious monuments, slavery and forceful religious conversions were firmly opposed under his administration. Shivaji was a religious Hindu, and showed respect toward other religions.[8] He also innovated rules of military engagement of that era. He pioneered "Shiva sutra" or Ganimi Kava (guerrilla tactics), which leveraged strategic factors like demographics, speed, surprise and focused attack to defeat his bigger and more powerful enemies.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (translation: 'king Shivaji museum'), abbreviated CSMVS and formerly named the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is the main museum in Mumbai, Maharashtra.[3] It was founded in the early years of the 20th century by prominent citizens of Mumbai, with the help of the government, to commemorate the visit of Edward VIII, who was Prince of Wales at the time. It is located in the heart of South Mumbai near the Gateway of India. The museum was renamed in the 1990s or early 2000s after Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire. Prior to this, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, formerly the Victoria and Albert Museum, was established in 1855, just opposite Byculla railway station, Mumbai. This museum is located inside the Victoria Garden, now called Jijamata Udyaan. This Gothic architecture building was revived a few years ago by the Mumbai municipal corporation authorities.
