I have quite a few photos of the Shield sundew (Drosera peltata) on Flickr, but here I was experimenting with a shallow depth of field, which gives the plant an ethereal quality.

I didn't see the iridescence of this shield bug until I got it on the pc. Took some time finding out its identity too!

Often seen on the leaves of our Orange Tree, as this one was through the week!

The winter forest sleeps, as the mighty winter bear, and dreams of springs return…

Maybe it is a Birch shieldbug (Elasmostethus interstinctus)

This approx. 1855 sculpture by Gustav Bläser. is named "Athena unterstützt den Krieger" (Athena protects the warrior).

The zinc statue is a replica of a sculpture that can be found at the Berlin Schlossbrücke, is located at Park De Paauw, Wassenaar, South-Holland.

Sawgrinder got an updated shield, now he's ready to defend Makuhero City from evil!

(Credit to Sparks/Dynks for the shield and its skeleton... never thought I'd say that).

"The Lord is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.

My heart leaps for joy,

and with my song I praise him."

- Psalm 28:7

If you look closely at the centre of this pink granite cross, under the lichen that has been growing there for nearly a century, you will see the outline of a shield. I can't tell you if anything was written under that lichen, I was not going to disturb it, but the combination of cross and shield is an intriguing one. There was no stylised Celtic carving on this cross, but the green lichen certainly brought a Celtic Cross to mind. Set against that fiery sunset that was starting to manifest itself, I was reminded of the great protection prayer of St Patrick (The Breastplate or Shield):

"I bind to myself to-day,

The Power of God to guide me,

The Might of God to uphold me,

The Wisdom of God to teach me,

The Eye of God to watch over me,

The Ear of God to hear me,

The Word of God to give me speech,

The Hand of God to protect me,

The Way of God to prevent me,

The Shield of God to shelter me,

The Host of God to defend me..."

And there's plenty more, because Patrick was truly a fearless man:

Family : Pentatomidae

Sub-Family : Pentatominae

Species : Carpocoris pudicus

This tiny (10-12mm long) and very colourful hemipteran shield bug is quite widespread throughout central and southern Europe. It is found in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, and parts of Russia. The colour of this species is quite variable with various shades of red and yellow. It is very difficult to separate this species from its sister species Carpocoris purpureipennis without specific examination of the genital structures. However, as I never collect specimens I cannot do this and have decided to go with C.pudicus.

The habitat for Carpocoris pudicus is dry warm and sunny scrubland, light forest, and cultivated land such as vineyards, usually at modest altitudes from 300 to 1500m asl.Larvae are found from early summer to early autumn and the adults seen from July onwards. Both feed on the fruit, flowers, and sap of a wide variety of different plants.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.

Gorse Shield Bug and Grasshopper

Probbacher Waldsee in Hessen

Idyllically situated between Probbach and Winkels in the Faulbach valley is a small reservoir, the 2.5-hectare Waldsee with a storage capacity of around 80,000 cubic metres. Its dam is nine metres high and 160 metres long. Built in 1974 as part of the Probbach/Winkels land consolidation programme and subsidised by special funds from the federal government and the EEC, the lake was intended to contribute to the development of the lower Westerwald as a leisure and recreation area. Now that the municipality of Mengerskirchen has built modern sanitary facilities, a kiosk and a barbecue hut here, the forest lake offers excellent opportunities not only for swimming but also for fishing.

I had quite unusual light and clouds on an October morning in downtown LA. The first time I have seen the Disney Concert hall and it did not disappoint.

Rhombodera basalis known as Malaysian shield mantis, is a species of praying mantis of the genus Rhombodera .

''Rhombodera basalis'' is a species of praying mantis of the genus ''Rhombodera''. Its commons name is the giant Malaysian shield mantis.

This is one of the powerful mantis species in East Asia. It can hunt small arthropods like grasshoppers, locusts, cicadas, spiders and scorpions or even some small mammals like mice, birds and snake.

The flowers are not the selling point and I was surprised to see them. They are very small and overshadowed by the vibrant foliage.

Here's a Gorse Shield Bug popping up to take a look at the camera.

This Green Shield bug was spotted wandering around on my windowsill a while ago. After having his photo taken he was released into the garden.
