Near the summit of An Sgarsoch now, it is within sight. An Sgarsoch translates as 'The Place of the Sharp Rocks' and I guess this is why it is so named. With all the climbing we've done today my legs are starting to cramp, but one final push as it levels out and we're there ..

Very sad to learn that Steve Watkins, editor of Outdoor Photography, passed away recently. This photo appears in this coming month's Outdoor Photography and his email congratulating me on it came just a couple of weeks before he passed away. His email was full of his warm words of support and encouragement. Although I never met him, Steve will be missed by me and I'm sure many others.

Flickr Friday theme of 'circles'

Taken just below Sharp Tor, Dartmoor.

This is the split rail fence that borders a portion of the Mill Valley Dog Park and is probably the most colorful fence you'll find anywhere, with lichen growing along its entire length.

I don't know what Flickr has done with the EXIF data, but I set the aperture at f22 for this shot, in order to get the entire length of the fence in sharp focus. Whatever Flickr's problem is, I hope they fix it soon because, whenever I see an interesting image, I immediately check the EXIF data to see how the shot was accomplished, and I really miss not having it.

Winter is a difficult time for the-Birds of Pray-those who rely on Vols and other sources of food. The snow makes it difficult to pray on them when they generally travel under the snow. This Sharp-shinned Hawk has been spotted near our bird feeders from time to time and has even killed a bird on occasions. Yesterday I spotted this Hawk in our front yard with a Quail it had just caught. With it's food in it's talons it flew to a near by area to dine.

Nature is harsh and the strong survives while the weak parish..

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus phoeniceus) - 20230516-06

Males are black with red shoulder patch that is sometimes concealed. Males have rusty feather edges in the winter. Females are streaked brown and often confused with sparrows. Look for long, sharply pointed bill. Often in flocks, especially in winter. Visits feeders. Breeds in marshes and scrubby, wet fields. Distinctive song, especially as migrants arrive in early spring. A proud male celebrates his vanquishing of the enemy found within the side mirror of a car. He fought that reflection for nearly five minutes, crammed in tight between door and mirror. His stance says it was all worth it.

Seeing in color is a joy for the eye, but seeing in black and white is a joy for the soul.

A corsage of needles, a cane basket and a little bit of sidelight gived me the opportunity to make this capture. I tried to set the degree of sharpness from left to the right side. ( lemon - orange - red )

Sharp Pins is one of my favorite local bands-super young and talented at the same time with musical gems that make me think of something that would be more popular in the 1960s. Kai Slater is also in the band Lifeguard.

Starting with this Sharp-tailed Grouse, the theme for my next few posts will be birds that nest on the ground.

It comes as a mild surprise to me that this group of birds can ever raise their young. The list of critters in various habitats that will eat their eggs and prey on their young is long. But evolution has provided ways for these birds to survive and thrive.

Nesting for this species is described by the Cornell Lab:

"Females select the nest site in grassland with brushy cover, usually less than a mile from the lek, in a place with vegetation at least 3 inches high. The female builds a nest that is an oval-shaped depression incorporating nearby plants—grasses, sedges, ferns, mosses, forbs, and leaves, sometimes lined with breast feathers. Nests are about 7 inches wide and 2.8 inches deep."

This pretty female was photographed in Custer State Park, South Dakota.
