Summer08 - day 11/92

The zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) is a species of carpet shark and the sole member of the family Stegostomatidae. It is found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, frequenting coral reefs and sandy flats to a depth of 62 m (203 ft). Adult zebra sharks are distinctive in appearance, with five longitudinal ridges on a cylindrical body, a low caudal fin comprising nearly half the total length, and a pattern of dark spots on a pale background. Young zebra sharks under 50–90 cm (20–35 in) long have a completely different pattern, consisting of light vertical stripes on a brown background, and lack the ridges. This species attains a length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). - Wikipedia

Shark Alley is a thin stretch of water between the two Islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock near Gansbaai in South Africa. Shark Alley was named this because of the large number of Great White Sharks that circle the Islands and swim through the narrow channel between them.

Another fun mural found about town. I had to clone out a car, a lamp post and a fire hydrant!

I had these people record a video for me too. They said 'hello narly! we're sharks too! we love you! yaaaaaaaaay!' and they waved and pointed and stuff. It was super cool. Only it turns out that I don't know how to use the video function on my blackberry.

Juvenile zebra sharks have a black body with light vertical bands, similar to that of a zebra. Only as adults do they acquire the light tone with dark spots, characteristic of the species. They are harmless animals, which swim slowly and during the day it is common to find them on the sea floor, with their mouths turned against the current, in order to breathe effortlessly. Their very flexible body and tail permit them to sneak inside narrow cracks and holes, where they search for prey. The eggs are protected by capsules and deposited on the sea floor, where they stay attached until hatching.

This shot was taken in Oahu at Sharks Cove. You have to capture it in between Low and High tide along with the perfect timing of Sunset. All 3 went together well when I took this shot. I was happy with the outcome, Enjoy!!!

Took this photo before I realized that I misunderstood Macro Mondays' challenge for the week. The challenge is to get as close as possibly can to the subject including a measuring device. I like this image so I'm posting this also.

Collected these fossilized shark teeth years ago at a beach west coast of Florida.

This is at some lame bar called (seriously) "Fubar." It's a picture of a shark in the urinal. I felt like it was gonna bite my dick (and torso) off. On the upside, you could get a bucket of Rheingolds for, like, $6.

There is a new development about to open in Southampton, described as a 'leisure-led hub, with over 20 restaurants, a showcase cinema de lux and also a bowling alley.' The restaurants were opened just before Christmas, the rest will follow in February.

I know I have a tendency to look on the black side especially in January, which month I find dark and oppressive, but having tried really hard I can't find anything I like about the outside look of this new building. I think probably that the inside is much brighter and certainly people have been enjoying trying all the new restaurants.

Over the next few days I will be posting several images so that you can make your own mind up.

From this angle it looks to me like a giant shark about to bite your head off. See first comment box for another image.

We only saw this 3m male shark a handful of times and he usually kept his distance. He may have been cautious of the cage, more likely the large female shark in the vicinity.

This was my third attempt at catching the Milky Way over Shark Fin Cove and finally the conditions were right. I got to this location about 2 1/2 hours before the moon was about to set and got some nice Moon lit foreground shots. Then by midnight the moon set, and the Milky Way was in full view. This is a blend of two shots taken about two hours apart. The main reason I had to blend this shot is because by the time the Milky Way was where I wanted it to be some other photographers were using bright lights and laser pointers to light paint all over the rocks

When it's shark week I celebrate. When it's not shark week I still celebrate. It makes people question my sanity and keeps them at a safe distance. I don't bite. I'm just an introvert.

Surf was huge at Shark Fin on this outing. Waves would occasionally break on the left side of this rock outcropping and sweep all the way across, resulting in this composition.

The baby shark was hooked by a fisherman on the shore. It was unhooked and released back into the ocean.

I deliberately left the man’s foot in the frame so that you can clearly see how small the shark is.

Perhaps the most distinct and iconic feature of a hammerhead shark is its long, flat head. However, a baby hammerhead shark is born with a slightly different-shaped noggin. Instead of the broad, flat head that adults have, baby hammerheads’ heads are slightly rounded. Scientists say they are born this way to make it easier to exit the birth canal.

Female hammerhead sharks typically give birth in the summer near warm coastlines and have live births. The babies are an average of 2.1 feet long and weigh about 6 pounds. e live births. The babies are an average of 2.1 feet long and weigh about 6 pounds.

Even though they are born small, hammerhead sharks have plenty of growing to do. Depending on their species, they will grow up to weigh anywhere from 500 to 1,000 pounds.
