I ran across a series of images of the Western Gull harassing a female Sea Otter in Monterey Bay. This was probably 150 feet off shore, but the lens on my brand new SX50 brought the whole scene up close. The otter didn't put up a fuss, and the gull would just keep closing in and grabbing a piece of crab or, a few minutes later, make a grab for a whole shell. This went on for at least 15 minutes. When the otter found she had no meal left, she'd roll over and dive, then come up with a fresh catch. And the gull would continue.
It's easy to tell that this is a female otter. Note the "bloody" nose. When sea otters mate, the male will bite the female on the nose and hold on even if she has a chance to dive. My only other experience is with river otters in the Central California Delta. From what little I've seen, sex among river otters is a lot more playful.

Probably Scoliid wasp, Campsomeris genus.

Molly was enjoying feeding the chickadees. It can be a bit hard for her to resist the peanuts but she has learned to share. After taking this shot I gave her a once over and discovered serveral tics on her. If you look closely you can spot three in this picture. I removed the ones I found and when I got home and took a peek at her one was sitting on the bridge of her nose. She has been bathed, brushed and checked again and so far she is clear. I think she may need to stay out of the woods until the snow falls now :(
Marianne brought Beowulf over and I fixed pita pockets with lemon dill tuna, humus, fresh tomato and cucumber. I made enough to share but we kept them waiting until the end just to see them beg. Being the little guy gets Sammy special attention from his Papa, even if it means going around the big boys with a little guile.
