Maha Shivaratri festival, Angalamman Temple, Kaveripattinam.
Once Shakthi was reborn as Parvati, Brahma performed a yaga to save god men from two demons known as sandobi and sundaran. Through this yagna Thilothama as Apsaras came to life. Attracted by the beauty of Thilothama, the demons, and even Brahma, followed her. For her protection she went to Kailash where Brahma also followed. As Brahma also was with five heads, Parvathi mistook him for Shiva and felt at his feet. When Parvathi realized the truth, she was very angry and prayed Shiva that the fifth head of Brahma should be destroyed. So Shiva as "Rudra" removed one head of Brahma so Brahma now with four heads cursed Shiva that his fifth head must be attached to his hand itself and hereafter Shiva must be affected having hunger, having no sleep. So Shiva came to earth and roamed everywhere. When he was hungry he begged and ate, but half of the food he begged was eaten by the fifth head of Brahma: that is, the "Kabala" so Shiva roamed in every graveyard and slept in ashes and that form of Shiva is worhipped as Sudalaimadan in south India.
Parvati went to her brother Lord Vishnu and asked for relief for her husband so Lord Vishnu said to Parvati, "My dear sister, go to thandakarunyam graveyard with your husband and make a pond there named "Agni kula theertham" and prepare a tasty food made by Agathi keerai (Humming bird tree leaves) and blood of chicken and serve that food to kabala and then throw the food everywhere in the graveyard. The kabala will come down, leaving Shiva's hand, to eat the food. Then take your husband to the pond and clean him with that water so that it will not catch your husbands hand". Parvati did as her brother said: she took her husband to thandakarunyam graveyard and prepared the food, served it to the kabala and then threw it in the graveyard. The kabala came down from Shiva's hand; meanwhile, Parvati took her husband to the pond and cleaned him. The kabala searched for Shiva's hand but could not touch him so it attached to Parvati's hand. So Parvati forgot about this and danced; then she recognised what had happened and become big and destroyed the kabala with her right leg.
The fiercest form (Angara rubam or Agora rubam) which destroyed the kabala when separated from Parvati is called Angalaamman. Parvati told Angalaamman to stay there and give a boon to the people who worship her and she went to Kailayam. However, Shiva was not there. Shiva got relief from Brahma's curse, but he was too hungry so he went Kasi and there Parvati, incarnated as "Annapoorani Devi", served him food and Shiva ate and got relief from his hunger.
In the Thandakarunyam Angalaamman give boon to the people who worship her the people who had diseases went there and get relief from the diseases she drive away the evil ghosts from the people and people go there and worship her in no moon days (Amavasya) at the midnight of every no moon day Angalamman is decorated and put on a swing
The first and third instrument from left side I have seen only in this temple.
The elongated blowing instrument I saw in all the temples in south Karnataka (Dakshin kannada) I visited. It makes a very loud funny sound when blown.
These people play the instrument moving and were scattered, and thus could not bring all of them in single frame.

"The Mother Goddess, Sri Pratyangira is also called 'Artharvana Bhadra Kali', because she is the guardian of our Atharvana Vedam that holds the secret of Mantras Tantras Yantras from good to evil. Her Character is straight forward and wherein mistakes are committed by anyone, she is quick to punish them. But she is also quick to forgive one who seeks solace in her and remains a true devotee."
Nothing special in this shot. A line of flower/garland shop and wetness due to drizzling rain made me click this.

Dvaja sthambam means flag mast. It is placed between sanctum-sanctorum and Rajagopuram or main entrance of the temple. It is made of single straight stem/trunk/bole of a tree, mostly teak tree and is cladded with copper or brass sheets with or without gold coating.
Significance of dvaja sthambam
1. During annual festival a flag is hoisted in the flag mast and stays hoisted until the festival is over. This sends across a message to all the inhabitants and travelers to place that they should adhere to ascetic practices during those days.
2. The copper cladded flag post consecrated over an altar draws in prana or cosmic energy into the temple and its surroundings.
3. The HUMAN BODY forms the Architectural base of a Hindu temple. Sanctum sanctorum represents the head and the rajagopuram or the main entrance the feet. Dvaja sthamba represents the male sex organ and is mounted on a peeta or pedestal that represents the female part, as with sivalinga.
Rope is usually made of coir (coconut fibre). Here, stem of climbing palm (also called rattan) is used as rope.
There are around 600 species of climbing palm in the world under 13 genera and among them the largest genus is Calamus, distributed in Asia. What we see here is the stem of a species of Calamus.
These plants have woody stem but they are soft and flexible comparing to true wood. The plant climbs to 30-40 high on the trees in the tropical forest. Here is such stem used in pairs on both sides to draw the chariot.

This is situated at Anaimalai, about 25 km south-west of Pollachi in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is nestled against the backdrop of Anaimalai Hills, part of the Western Ghats, the great mountain chain running along the west coast of peninsular India.
The temple is dedicated to Mother Goddess, shakthi or primordial energy. The interesting and wonderful aspect of the temple is that the deity is seen in a lying posture. Lying on the back the idol measures 15 ft from head to foot. The deity is depicted with four hands; two placed on the ground and two rose above.

The palanquin made of silver is used for taking the idol of Goddes Mookambika along the outer circle or “prakara” (second circle around the sanctum sanctorum) of the temple.
This is carried by four people on their shoulder by two wooden poles. At spots where customs are lengthy, the palanquin is placed on four wooden stands, which are seen on the image places across.
Silver palanquin is used only during festivities.
This is the “ratha” or temple car used for taking the idol of Goddes Mookambika along the outer circle or “prakara” (second circle around the sanctum sanctorum) of the temple.
This car is used only during festivities. On ordinary days the idol is taken on the head by the assistant priests three times a day (morning, noon and night) in a customary way.
This car is seldom decorated.
The temple dedicated to God Siva and Goddess Parvathy. It is located along the banks of River Pennar, 13 km from Nellore town and was built in 1450 A.D. Here Goddess is worshipped as Kamakshi and Siva as Mallikarjuna. However, the temple is known by the Goddess. It is said that Adi Sankaracharya has installed srichakram in the sanctum sanctorum of Kamakshi shrine.
Though the temple is very old it is very simple in architecture. No huge towers (gopuram), no huge walls.
The Elk Hill Murugan Temple, also known as the Elk Murugan Temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
The temple is situated atop Elk Hill, which is approximately 1 km from Rose Garden and 4 km from Ooty Railway Station.
Perched at an elevation of 2,500 meters above sea level, Elk Hill offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The highlight of the temple is a 40 feet tall statue of Lord Murugan, which stands outside the temple enclosures. This magnificent statue is a replica of the Murugan Statue in Batu Caves, Malaysia. Besides Lord Murugan, the temple premises also house idols of Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakthi, Nava Kanika, Navagrahas, and more.

I have never heard about leaves of trees being used for rituals in temple. For the first time I saw in this temple leaves of a wild tree being offered instead of flowers during bali but done only during annual temple festival.
The wild tree here is Rose sandalwood or wild olive [Botanical name: Olea dioica Family: Oleaceae (Jasmine family)]. A small tree growing upto 15 m, seen disturbed throughout the Western Ghats in evergreen and moist deciduous forests.
The tree is having medicinal property; bark and leaves of it is used to treat fever.

Sree bhootha bali is a ritual performed thrice every day when cooked rice is offered to bhootha or body guard of the presiding deity represented by bali kallu (shaped granite stones) placed in different locations along the first and second circle around the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. This is done by the chief priest of the temple with the utsava vigraha or seeveli moorthy carried on hand or palanquin or chariot. Belief is that the presiding deity HIMSELF/HERSELF is offering food to HIS/HER dependents.
Meenakshi Devi at Om Shakthi Temple, Kammanahalli, Bengaluru.
Meenakshi is a Hindu goddess and is considered an avatar of the goddess Parvati. She is the divine consort of Sundareśvarar, a form of Shiva. The goddess is also extolled by Adi Shankara as Shri Vidya.
Closeup of carvings on the main temple car. This wooden part is permanent and forms the basement or chassis of the car. The structure above this is built and dismantled every year and the materials used is kept safely for future use.
The Mangaladevi Temple is situated in the city limits of Mangalrore (Mangaluru) Distirct in the Karnataka State of India. The temple is dedicated to Hindu mother Goddess Sakthi in the form of Mangaladevi and is built in Kerala style architecture with most of its structure made of wood. The place got its name from the presiding deity.
The temple is believed to have been built by Parasurama, one of the ten avatars of Hindu God Vishnu and later expanded during the 9th Century by Kundavarman, the most famous king of the Alupa dynasty. This royal dynasty ruled coastal Karnataka from 4th to 15th Century with Mangalore as its capital.
The region is also called Tulu Nadu, the Tulu-speaking region spread over parts of present Indian States of Karnataka and Kerala. This also forms the erstwhile South Canara (Dakshin Kannada) region and it consists of Kundapura, Udupi, Karkala, Mangalore, Belthangady and Puthur Districts in Karnataka and Kasargod District of Kerala.
WHEN WE VISITED IN MARCH 2014 IT WAS ANNUAL FESTIVAL TIME FOR THE TEMPLE. SO MUCH OF FRUITS TIED AT THE BASE OF THE FLAG MAST CAUGHT MY EYES AS I HAVE NEVER SEEN LIKE THIS BEFORE.
The idol of Goddess Mookambika is taken along second circle around the sanctum sanctorum of the temple during ucha seeveli (procession in the noon) performed after ucha pooja or madhyahna pooja or uchi kaala pooja (offering and worship at noon).
Idol used for the procession is not the main stone carved seen in the sanctum-sanctorum but one made of panchaloha [pancha=five; loha= metals – copper, brass, silver, gold and iron] or pure gold or pure silver. Here it is of panhaloha.
Idol used for procession is called utsava moorthy or utsava vigraham or seeveli moorthy or thidambu. This is usually kept inside the sanctum-sanctorum along with the main idol.
The idols are being carried by the assistant priests of the temple.
