A rally and press conference was held on Tuesday afternoon April 10th at the Daley Center in downtown Chicago to call attention to the fact that the state of Illinois is one of fourteen states yet to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

The Equal Rights Amendment states that: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex". The E.R.A, would provide legal protection for women in various ways including gender-based violence, equal pay, and pregnancy discrimination.

70% of America's poor are women. This also affects the children who depend on them.

Women make up roughly half the workforce and constitute two-thirds of minimum wage workers.

Women earn 79 and 44% of what men make adjusted for their race. The latter figure applies more to blacks and Hispanics.

Women are twice as likely to retire in poverty as men.

Passing the E.R.A. would ensure that employers could not give women less pay for doing the same work as a man.

One of the key components of the National Rural Health Mission is to provide every village in the country with a trained female community health activist ASHA or Accredited Social Health Activist. Selected from the village itself and accountable to it, the ASHA will be trained to work as an interface between the community and the public health system. Following are the key components of ASHA :

• ASHA must primarily be a woman resident of the village married/ widowed/ divorced, preferably in the age group of 25 to 45 years.

• She should be a literate woman with due preference in selection to those who are qualified up to 10 standard wherever they are interested and available in good numbers. This may be relaxed only if no suitable person with this qualification is available.

• ASHA will be chosen through a rigorous process of selection involving various community groups, self-help groups, Anganwadi Institutions, the Block Nodal officer, District Nodal officer, the village Health Committee and the Gram Sabha.

• Capacity building of ASHA is being seen as a continuous process. ASHA will have to undergo series of training episodes to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence for performing her spelled out roles.

• The ASHAs will receive performance-based incentives for promoting universal immunization, referral and escort services for Reproductive & Child Health (RCH) and other healthcare programmes, and construction of household toilets.

• Empowered with knowledge and a drug-kit to deliver first-contact healthcare, every ASHA is expected to be a fountainhead of community participation in public health programmes in her village.

• ASHA will be the first port of call for any health related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children, who find it difficult to access health services.

• ASHA will be a health activist in the community who will create awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilise the community towards local health planning and increased utilisation and accountability of the existing health services.

• She would be a promoter of good health practices and will also provide a minimum package of curative care as appropriate and feasible for that level and make timely referrals.

• ASHA will provide information to the community on determinants of health such as nutrition, basic sanitation & hygienic practices, healthy living and working conditions, information on existing health services and the need for timely utilisation of health & family welfare services.

• She will counsel women on birth preparedness, importance of safe delivery, breast-feeding and complementary feeding, immunization, contraception and prevention of common infections including Reproductive Tract Infection/Sexually Transmitted Infections (RTIs/STIs) and care of the young child.

• ASHA will mobilise the community and facilitate them in accessing health and health related services available at the Anganwadi/sub-centre/primary health centers, such as immunisation, Ante Natal Check-up (ANC), Post Natal Check-up supplementary nutrition, sanitation and other services being provided by the government.

• She will act as a depot older for essential provisions being made available to all habitations like Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORS), Iron Folic Acid Tablet(IFA), chloroquine, Disposable Delivery Kits (DDK), Oral Pills & Condoms, etc.

• At the village level it is recognised that ASHA cannot function without adequate institutional support. Women's committees (like self-help groups or women's health committees), village Health & Sanitation Committee of the Gram Panchayat, peripheral health workers especially ANMs and Anganwadi workers, and the trainers of ASHA and in-service periodic training would be a major source of support to ASHA.

Hypothetically, if I were to Google the assaulter's name, I could get hundreds of newspaper archives and internet articles entitled "State Constable from Berks County Rapes 15-year-old Girl". It pisses me off. It is nobody's business but mine, his, and the court of law's.

BC is expanding its #SaySomething awareness campaign to help end the silence about sexual assault and encourage more people to speak up, become aware and learn safe ways to help or offer support to someone who has experienced sexual violence.

Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Morris visited the Surpassing Our Survival (SOS) Society – which has one of the larger contracts to deliver the Stopping the Violence counselling program in B.C. – to hear about its work with victims and outline steps the Province is taking to eliminate sexual violence.

Washington DC, October 4, 2018. Thousands gathered here today for a rally and march to oppose the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. The very large, diverse* and energized crowd of protesters assembled at the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Court House and then marched to the U.S. Supreme Court for a rally with speeches. Judge Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault by at least three women and of lying to Congress numerous times by many prominent legislators. Today's action is a continuation of weeks of nationwide non-violent protests against Kavenaugh that have resulted in over a thousand arrests. Over three hundred were arrested in the Hart Senate Office Building atrium just this evening. Despite the best efforts of the protesters it is expected that the morally bankrupt Senate Republicans will stumble Kavenaugh's confirmation over the finish line on Friday or Saturday. Why? Kavanaugh will compliantly hand President Donald J. Trump a "get out of jail free" card if an anticipated and much deserved impeachment proceeding is launched when the balance of power in Congress shifts to the Democrats.

*Women led the way by far in numbers and were the chief organizers, the most militant and the most arrested.

I wish this hadn't happened.

But it has.

No one deserves this.

On Thursday, December 10th, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito and First Lady Lauren Baker addressed the Massachusetts Conference for Women at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

Both women highlighted the administration's initiatives to improve the personal and professional lives of women. Lt. Governor Polito discussed her work as chair of the Governor's Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, and highlighted the important roles of female leadership in the Baker-Polito administration.

As a sexual assault survivor I've watched this week in horror as men acted like they were the victims of a tragic miscarriage of justice rather than having respect and consideration for an actual victim. I took this image of a bird home that had the foundation burned through and destroyed in a wildfire. I often wonder about the bird(s) that used to inhabit this little house and hope that they made it out alright.

I grew up in a small house with my 7 siblings and have never moved. Even though my neighbor sexually assaulted me through my teenage years I stayed, and continue to stay in the same house. The house is just a shelter; it does not harbor any other meaning to me. The city in which I grew up is just a location within a larger location, which sits yet in bigger more expansive locations until the entire universe is brought in, completing the big picture. I know that my one tiny soul is rather small and meaningless when compared against the grand and stunning universe, yet I am alive and am cognizant of my existence. I know when I have been harmed. I know when I have been helped. I know when I am alone or surrounded by love. I know when I have a firm foundation of support and when I do not.

Soon I will be homeless. My foundation and support will literally be stripped away from me as I am forced to uproot my life and leave everything I have ever known. Change can be a good thing and most often I welcome it, however this time I am not ready. The rug has been ripped out from under my feet; I did not have even a moment to brace myself for the inevitable crash of my body to the ground. Once on my knees I stay there, unable to stand. My whole world is changing and my head is spinning. I don’t know where to turn for the solidity I need. I feel lost and alone in this commotion of my life.

I try to pretend that I am not moving for as long as I can, but reality soon sets. The cleaning and preparation for the move never seems to ease. I feel like I’m running faster than my legs have strength to carry me and still there is more to do. The exhaustion I feel is overwhelming and incomprehensible. I had no idea I could get so low and feel so completely wasted. I never can get myself to eat enough calories -- my eating disorder is winning. I am continuity losing weight and the stress I am feeling is not helping. I feel like an empty cup waiting to be filled but it just gathers motes of dust instead of water. My body weight has now dipped lower than ever before. I am about 13 pounds below the weight I was when I was hospitalized, and nobody knows. I am keeping my weight loss a secret because the move is all encompassing and quite honestly I don’t think anyone truly cares.

I care but not enough to actually eat more because I enjoy not feeling anything. Being numb at a time like this is a blessing, because without the numb I would be crying every single day. I would be crying because I am not ready to leave my therapist. It has taken me almost a year to be able to believe on his words and not just think he is simply doing his job. I’m so afraid to leave this therapeutic relationship because I know it is unique and rare.

I don’t care about my home, or my galactic location, all I care about is my support system. I am sad because I am being ripped away from my support just when I finally learned to cherish it.

Babubazar bridge, Monday. The evening is descending in the old quarters of Dhaka with the aging darkness that it befriended since the dawn of time. Working people of the city are returning to their domiciles on the other side of the river Buriganga, everyone's in a hurry, they are trying to leave behind whatever misdeed they've done in the last 10 hours. The massive swarm of people includes day laborers, street vendors and maid servants. All of a sudden I see this face emerging from under one streetlamp to the other, an unnamed angst and sadness gripping her face.

She is crying.

Perhaps it's because her employer had tried to take advantage of her in the morning, perhaps her lover died recently, perhaps she just discovered that there's an unborn inside her with no one to take responsibilities, perhaps a nail penetrated her feet on the way to the bridge's approach road...who knows. I don't want to at least, I've my own problems to masquerade behind.

I like this photograph, I don't know why...this might not hold any real value to someone who is just seeing this in some other part of the planet in his/her perfect little online world..but I was there, and she was terrifyingly tactile.

You know what, nothing as it seems, only on black does justice.
