View of the south side of the walls of the fabulous castle of Gormaz.

On the access road you can see several cyclists intrepidly climbing towards the current access gate to the castle.

And behind them, you can briefly see the Duero River which, just behind the castle, will make a 90º turn towards the north.

This magnificent castle, located near the small town of Gormaz (Soria, Spain), north of the Duero River, is the longest castle in Europe, its dimensions are impressive: 446 m from east to west, a perimeter of 1,200 m, a total of 38 towers.

It was built around the year 1,000 on the remains of Celtiberian and Roman constructions.

The famous knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar "El Cid", vassal of several Christian kings and Muslim kings, was the first Castilian mayor.

When most castles ended up losing their usefulness, this castle was used for some time as a prison. Today it is in ruins and can be visited for free.

Several plants, including a red maple, have colonized this boulder surrounded by the water of a New Hampshire pond, perhaps 50 feet from the shore. I'm afraid their future is not rosy, but I will come back next year to see how they are doing.

Several countries have monuments to the Unknown Soldier, but perhaps only Iceland has a sculpture honoring — and lightly satirizing — the thankless, anonymous job of the bureaucrat.

The 1994 sculpture by Magnús Tómasson depicts a man in a suit holding a briefcase, with his head and shoulders subsumed in a slab of unsculpted stone."

Following several mornings of good sunrises, and with a decent forecast given, my mate and I made the, relatively, short drive to Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire,

Although things looked promising upon our arrival, clouds over the land moved a lot faster out to sea than anticipated, and so we never actually saw the sun, just the thin sliver of light you see in this image.

My mate had already made his way down to the beach in the dark, illuminating his way with his head torch, whilst I took the opportunity to take some shots from up top.

As I descended the steps I saw him stood, motionless, surveying the scene, no doubt a little despondent, and wondering if the journey was a bust. As he stood there, I noticed the light that his head torch was casting as he moved his head side to side. And so I quickly set up for a shot, praying that he didn’t move during the long exposure. After getting him, I then shot the foreground and blended the two together in post.

Several weeks ago as I passed this deserted farmsite located several miles out of our town. I have photographed the barn a few times in different seasons. A solid looking farmhouse across from this barn was in a pile of twisted wood after getting demolished a few days earlier.

The next time driving by I noticed several outbuildings were leveled and wondered if the milkhouse and barn were next. They were.

I find when older folks lament the destruction of old barns throughout a farming community that it is not so much the physical structure that brings pangs of regret but what they associate with those barns.

Weathered lumber can be reclaimed but for many of us, we suspect the underlying attitudes of the days when neighbors helped each other bale hay, shell corn or fill silos are gone forever as our society has become entrenched in a life-long rush to accumulate things rather than in looking out for the welfare of others around us.

Old time farm folks remember small community high schools that tied folks together in cheering on their young folks, smaller community churches that helped bind wounds and build people up and they fondly recall the normal occurences of receiving a friendly wave when meeting someone on a gravel road on the way to town. The all too common situations today where neighbors don't even know the names of their neighbors seems foreign to them.

And in the destruction of yet another barn built nearly a 100 years ago, the emotions roll on unabated as the memories of the past begin to seem unreal even to those of us who lived them.

There are several routes by which to reach Kibo, or Uhuru Peak, the highest summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, namely, Marangu, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe and Machame.

Annually, approximately 15,000 people attempt to reach the summit of the mountain, of whom 40% do so.

Of all the routes, Machame is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain. The Rongai is the easiest camping route and the Marangu is also easy, but accommodation is in huts. As a result, this route tends to be very busy and ascent and descent routes are the same. Although the Rongai route is a flatter walk it offers less opportunities for acclimatisation. The Machame and Lemosho routes both allow better opportunities to "walk high and sleep low" which is critical to avoiding altitude sickness.

The fourth day of trekking starts with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, which is considered a scramble in climbing terms. The top of the Wall has attractive vistas of Kibo and the surrounding landscape. The trail continues with many up and down sections across small streams and rivulets, and finally crosses the Karanga River to the Karanga campsite.

For several years Iain and I have discussed doing a sunset to sunrise summer shoot. On Friday we finally got around to it, choosing The Hill of the Red Fox (Sgùrr a' Mhadaidh Ruaidh) on the Trotternish ridge as our location. Access is via several miles of dirt-track so it wasn't surprising to find we had the place to ourselves - besides several trilion midges of course!! They really were awful and very nearly spoiled the whole event. I thought I would get a couple of hours respite when we finally lost the light after sunset and returned to our tents (first camping for years!!) but was horrified to find I was sharing it with many thousand of the little blighters and am covered in bites today. Anyway, though we didn't get the amazing sunset we were hoping for, there was some lovely evening light on the mountain and the small lochans were generally calm enough for some perfect reflections.

I drive by this abandoned ranch several times a year as it is just a few miles from my home in Lassen County, California, USA. More specifically, it is just east of what was the small town of Amedee around the turn of the 20th century. On this particular morning, the area had gotten a nice dusting of fresh snow overnight which I think enhanced the scene with the old broken Aermotor windmill and neglected barn.

Ranching is one of the few industries in this area and I still see cattle and sheep ranging on adjacent properties quite frequently. Hopefully this place will be see use again one day; there’s a very faded “for sale” sign on the post where I shot this image.

There are several little nooks and crannies in the village of Orlingbury in the north of Northamptonshire, and they are invariably named after the trades that used to be practised there many years ago. Pictured is Carpenters Yard. From the research I've done it seems that back in the 19th century and beyond, most villages seemed to have residents who - between them - practised virtually all the various different trades so that the village effectively became self-contained without the need for people to travel very far.

There are several routes to Machu Picchu - the most famous is the two-day Inca Trail. But this is unfortunately very crowded and the permits are booked months in advance.

The Salkantay trek is perhaps the most spectacular alternative to the classic Inca Trail: The four-day hike is 68 kilometers - one and a half times as long as the Inca Trail. And he leads up to 4630 meters (15,190 feet) above sea level to the Salkantay Pass, which is higher than the Matterhorn and the thin air makes you quite a job from 4000 meters.

This effort is rewarded with grandiose views of snow-capped six-thousanders, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Andes and a magnificent starry sky. It leads through cloud forests and past passion fruit and avocado plantations.

The photo was taken on the first day of our tour - before we reached the base camp in Soraypampa (3860 meters).

Several of my recurring subjects here, but the light show through the clouds was pretty inspirational.

After several visits and sitting, watching, waiting, I managed to get a few shots today. ISO at 5000 - the weather was terrible - fog and drizzle - I was very surprised that he was still out hunting. Not the sharpest of shots but I was rather pleased that he didn't fly off immediately. I actually followed him down the fence line and he landed 4 times on different posts and didn't seem bothered that I was there.

Several interestingly coloured lichens in this photo, but with the exception of the one on the right - which I think maybe ochrolechia parella - I am a bit clueless about these. The orange blobs might be the apothecia (spore producing parts) of one of the caloplaca lichens, but there seem to be about 50 of those!

All knowledgeable help gratefully received.

Several years ago this Rose of Sharon tree appeared in our backyard, growing next to brick wall of our house. I left it alone that summer and replanted it in the front yard that fall.

It was a "gift" from a bird or possibly a squirrel from who know where? We already had a white Rose of Sharon, but not a frilly white one like this is.

This will be its second year in our front yard and has recently started blooming. Was running an errand today and decided to grab a few shots before they wilt from the summer heat.

Several Hares around at Snettisham last week.

Several cardinals were in the yard yesterday; about half male and half female. I noticed how some of the females have tan feathers while others tend to be more grayish and others, like this one, have a reddish hue mixed in. I went back a few weeks to find this one I really like.

Several reports have indicated that Amtrak is planning to add another sleeper and another coach to the Zephyr for Spring and Summer of 2025. While the westbound Zephyr has had a handful of runs with eight Superliners in the past few weeks, at the moment, it is still typically only running with seven. It is seen here, climbing the north edge of Big Ten Curve.

Several generations on the beach of Arromanches-les-Bains in Normandy. Known as Gold Beach during the invasion in World War II. In the background, in the sea, the remains of an artificial harbour built by the Allies. Partly thanks to the invasion, the little girl in the foreground can enjoy a life of freedom. I like the contrast between her, playing carefree, and the old man taking pictures with perhaps his own memories.

While on the east coast, I visited several larger towns, which is something I don't really do all that much on the road these days. But I did. Took some pictures, too - most of which lay undeveloped in my fridge. It's a whole thing. Eventually.

Until then, enjoy this black & white photo of the ass end of a building in Rocky Mount, small city in North Carolina.

There are several Victorian Railway lines that extend into NSW due to being much closer to Melbourne than Sydney. The original Echuca to Deniliquin line was a private line opening in 1876, later taken over by the Victorian Government Railways in 1923. NSW Government Railways never made it to Deniliquin, there were plans to go there however. This has left this as being the longest operating Broad Gauge line still in NSW. The only other operational one is the short section of line at Tocumwal, the NSW standard gauge closed long ago, but there have been recent attempts to reopen it.

SSR operate regular grain trains out of Deniliquin to Melbourne, today S312, P14 and S317 departed Deniliquin for Allied Pinnacle at Kensington as train number 9098. Rice Mill traffic ceased about 3 years ago, but there is talk of it starting back up again in the future.

Several Canadian National guards man the east side of Durand, Michigan if you approach. This was once the Grand Truck main line between Detroit and Chicago. New "Safe-T" signals provide the Christmas y feel.

The last several days have been ones of significant change in the countryside around our town. Just last week, this bean field was a dark green; this morning, it shows the change of the season as it has yellowed and will soon begin the drying process that will result in harvest next month.

Many trees are already showing reds, yellows, and golds as they begin the ever-hastening lurch toward full fall colors.

The habits of wildlife are in full change mode as well. Deer are largely absent as they can read in the Star Tribune that bow season starts this Saturday, followed by other opportunities for them to be shot by two-legged pursuers.

Waterfowl are doing practice runs for migration as they fly high overhead from one body of water to another. Small songbirds are gorging themselves on seeds and berries as they load up for the trip south.

I even noted an old photographer headed to Shalom, our great thrift store, to update his autumn wardrobe, where he will splurge and buy the latest warm fashions for $3 each, which will look an awful lot like his last year's fashion.

If you like the change of seasons in Minnesota, this is a good time. If you find yourself dreading the coming winter, I already like you.

Several newly-emerged Small Copper butterflies were seen during last week's run of good sunny weather. This individual, like most of the others, settled on Common Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica).

Several of these about, we only saw 1 Southern Hawker and yet again no Darters. We have not seen one this year anywhere so far.
