Took a break from working on vacation pics to see if I could find some new birds in Confederation Park. There are lots of warbler types going through there right now and I've been lacking in the warbler department. I may have got about five new birds to add to my list today. This guy is one of them.

Ran into Eddy Matuod down there and he was a lot of help in finding these birds.

Male American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) - Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary - Lincoln Park, Chicago Park District, Chicago, IL - 6 May 2012

This migrating 1st year male American Redstart seemed to think the birdbath was his personal property -- he kept fanning his tail at the resident birds as if to intimidate them into leaving. It was pretty funny. They were all bigger than him, and his tactics didn't work, though he did get a bath eventually.

The evening before this shot was taken; my tripod got knocked over on the Boardwalk Trail. There was a large group of people in front of me. I stopped and set the tripod up next to the rail on one side. A birder behind me pointed out a Wood Thrush that was perched right next to the boardwalk. To see it, I had to let go of the tripod and bend down. I sensed motion to my right and turned in time to watch my rig crash into the boardwalk and bounce off the other side. I treated a lot of people to an expletive. I picked up the equipment and set it back up. I took a couple shots of the Wood Thrush. The autofocus seemed a little slow but the shots I took were sharp. I thought I had dodged a bullet.

When I spotted this American Redstart, he was working low shrubs with a good field of view. I started working for a clear shot. When he would get clear, I would try to take a shot. By the time the camera finished focusing, he was gone.

When I got home, I took the camera and lens to the Canon Repair Facility in Jamesburg, New Jersey. Now I need to find another American Redstart. I am posting this so I can add it to my life-list. I don’t add until I have a recognizable photograph. This shot barely qualifies.

After a long and hard week, I really needed to get out and take some pictures to relax (I mean, come on - I was down under 1,000 in the backlog). So, we decided to go butterfly and dragonfly hunting at Palmyra Cove. It turned out to be a good decision.

We saw probably 12-14 different dragonfly species although we could only get shots of about half of them (all of the ones we already had, of course), a few cool butterflies and a new lifelist bird for me - this beauty. There were actually three of them - this female and two juveniles - but I was only able to get shots of the mother.
