The Latin word Setophaga means 'moth eater' and ruticilla means 'red tail', so, what we have here is a red tailed moth eater. Definitely more dark orange than red, though, in my opinion. Trying to get these guys to stand still for a shot takes a lot of time and a little bit of patience.
American Redstart - female
Setophaga ruticilla
The same day that I had a pair of bay-breasted warblers in the yard, this female redstart was also hanging about, spending a lot of time in our big Norway Maple.
These handsome warblers were all over the Old Mine Road IBA last Friday, often singing their song and fooling me into thinking it was something else.

I got close to a young male here a couple of days ago. I got really close this female today.

This is a first fall male. Not a sharp image but good enough for me to post as a record for my late summer/early fall 2014 warbler hunt. I can always hope to improve on it over the next week or so.

The American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is a New World warbler. It is unrelated to the Old World redstarts. It derives its name from the male's red tail, start being an old word for tail.
The breeding males are unmistakable, jet black above apart from large orange-red patches on their wings and tails. Their breast sides are also orange, with the rest of their underparts colored white. In their other plumages, American redstarts display green in their upperparts, along with black central tails and grey heads. The orange patches of the breeding males are replaced by yellow in the plumages of the females and young birds.

I've gotten a few shots of the female, but this is the first reasonably decent one of the male. Flighty little birds!
I found the nest of the first ever recorded American Redstart to nest in the Vancouver Area. It took a bit of effort to find it. I found the nest when the chicks were only a day old and came back everyday to record their progress. They fledged on day 4 and 5, I was amazed at how fast they grew up. I kept their location a secret as I didn't want something to happen to them.
One has already left the nest, I watched him fly into the bush below.

I'm pretty certain this is an American Redstart either a female but more likely a juvenile male in its first summer.
It seemed to be talking to Donna 3 feet away on this boardwalk at the Gros Morne National Park Visitors centre in Newfoundland.
It didn't look too healthy! It eventually fluttered away into the bush!
I watched this individual for some time as it preened. It then stretched and I was able to capture this interesting pose. Magee Marsh May 2014
I had always wondered where redstart came from and why wouldn't "they" just call it a warbler. Well, Redstarts get their name from the old country where a start means "tail." In the case of this little warbler, they love spreading their tail to show off the red banding. There are other birds in other locations of the world with similar names including Whitestarts, because, you guessed it, A white band on the tail. This family of new world warblers are found in South America. There are also some thrush in the old world that are called redstarts as well with no relation.
