Setophaga ruticilla

Like the Painted Redstart and other “redstarts” of the Neotropics, the American Redstart flashes the bright patches in its tail and wings. This seems to startle insect prey and give the birds an opportunity to catch them. Though these birds share a common name, they are not closely related to each other.

First summer males and adult females look quite similar. I am calling this a juvenile male because there is no yellow at the base of the primaries as there would be on an adult female, and the yellow on the sides is more extensive than would be seen on a female.

One of a number Redstarts that hung around our campground for a local 'fall out' lasting 24 hours.

We are seeing more birds at the small pond feature than normal, probably the heat and lack of rain.

True to its Halloween-themed color scheme, the redstart seems to startle its prey out of the foliage by flashing its strikingly patterned tail and wing feathers.

I'm not sure if the American Redstart is considered rare around here, but it's certainly uncommon. This is the first time I've been able to get a good look at this species(2 years ago I got a momentary glimpse). These are my two best shots.

"Young male American Redstarts have gray-and-yellow plumage, like females, until their second fall. Yearling males sing vigorously in the attempt to hold territories and attract mates. Some succeed, but most do not breed successfully until the following year when they develop black-and-orange breeding plumage."

Found at Hale Reservation, I believe this guy is on his yearly migration to Central/South America. Happenstance brought us together, and within feet of each other.

Although this little New World warbler breeds in BC he is a lifer for me.

Setophaga is a genus of birds of the New World warbler family Parulidae. It contains at least 33 species. The males in breeding plumage are often highly colorful. The Setophaga warblers are an example of adaptive radiation with the various species using different feeding techniques and often feeding in different parts of the same tree.

The contrast of this bird usually causes my auto-focus to go haywire... I got lucky on this one. A male American Redstart with its tail fanned out... and in focus. Yeah! :-)
