Chapter 11 in Ted's monthly news update...

October 19th/20th 2010

Another Month has rolled around....

Ted got a bit behind with last month...

We took the photo but just never got around to uploading it!

He's only JUST forgiven me for that...

It's been a busy time just lately.

THIS month though... he was adamant that I get it sorted straight away....

As he has a very important new story to cover!

Usually we do the report on the 19th.. but in this case we're doing the 20th!

To cover the terribly tragic Mining Disaster that occured on the 19th!

PIKE RIVER MINE BLAST...

Anxious Families gather as Rescue Crew wait for all clear to enter mine...

Families gathered outside the Pike River Coal offices in Greymouth early this morning to hear the latest news of the 29 trapped miners.

Looking tired and anxious, the families are hearing a briefing from Pike River Coal and rescue authorities who are still not able to enter the mine after the explosion yesterday afternoon. Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn has been greeting each family member with hugs. Kokshoorn said the successful Chilean mine rescue is giving him hope. "We remember the Chile mine recently, that every miner got out. At the moment, we're hanging onto every hope, just like they did. However, Mr Kokshoorn said a speedy rescue was not likely. "Rescue crews are doing all they can, but this is going to be a very slow recovery." Rescuers are still waiting for the all-clear on gas build-up before going into the coal mine. Nothing had been heard from the men since the explosion deep underground yesterday afternoon.

Worried families rushed yesterday to the entrance to the Pike River Coal company's mine, 46km east of Greymouth. The alarm was raised when mine electrician Russell Smith, 50, investigated a power cut at 3.50pm. He discovered loader driver Daniel Rockhouse, 24, who had been blown off his machine. The two men, who were working some distance from the other mine staff, escaped through a service portal and walked 2km through a valley to alert emergency services. The pair had moderate injuries and were taken to Grey Hospital in Greymouth.

Pike River Coal CEO Peter Whittall says it unlikely that yesterday's explosion could have caused a collapse at the mine, where 29 miners remain missing. He expects the mine's structural integrity to hold due to the design and materials used. "Mine explosions don't typically damage the roof unless there are timber props that can be knocked out," he said at a press conference this morning, "we don't have those in the mine." "We've got a very strong roof, it's all fully bolted and I would believe it's unlikely that an explosion even of a significant magnitude would actually damage the [mine shaft]," said Whittall.

He said that as the mine is a tunnel mine, not a shaft mine, which means a rescue will be much more easy, once it is deemed safe to enter. Officials remain concerned about the possible levels of methane gas in the mine. Mr Whittal said they weren't aware of any hazardous circumstances in the mine on Friday and added the miners have an oxygen device which can give them 30 to 60 minutes of clean air. Whittall said he has assured family and friends of the trapped miners that the company is doing every humanly and technically possible to recover them.

Ted and the 'Rescue Bears' have been on standby all weekend...

Ready to offer their service once the 'All Clear' has been given and it's safe to go in!

At present it is still a waiting game... and a very sad and anxious time for the families involved!

Here's a little song byThe Cowboy Junkies... with respect to those Miners

Our thoughts and prayers are with them all for a safe recovery!

I'll be back tomorrow to catch up with you all...

It's WAY past my bedtime just now...

But Ted insisted I get this loaded tonight! %-)

The Sørbø medieval church was built in 1130. It is situated on the Rennesøy island in south west Norway.

The visitors' entrance doesn't need door handles or a knocker, as Thames House is the headquarters of MI5 ('the Security Service'): they already know who you are, when you'll be arriving, and why.

Okay; these are merely the outer doors, opened during office hours.

The Grade II Listed building, on the northern bank of the river overlooking Lambeth Bridge, was designed by Sir Frank Baines in an Imperial Neoclassical style and built 1928-30 for ICI. Acquired by the government for £82 million in 1988, Thames house underwent "refurbishment to a basic office standard" costing £227 million (which obviously included certain specialist requirements) before opening in 1994.

The conversion incorporated considerable physical and electronic defences, few of which are immediately apparent, but note the metal brackets in the lower windows, supporting glass panels preventing anything being left on the sills. I also happened to see some of those distinctive bollards being installed in Whitehall last year, so know that their foundations are startlingly robust. For those unfamiliar with UK road markings, the red line means 'don't even think of stopping here, never mind waiting'.

Not to be confused with the ziggurat-like headquarters of MI6 (SIS, 'the Secret Intelligence Service') at Vauxhall Cross, on the southern bank of the Thames at Vauxhall Bridge, nor Freemasons' Hall in Great Queen Street, Holburn, the exterior of which was used as 'Thames House' in the BBC's 'Spooks' TV series. The real Thames House did appear in the BBC's 'Torchwood: Children Of Earth', however.

I presume the bearded face over the doors (which are by W.B. Fagan), bounded by sails and similar nautical imagery, represents Old Father Thames.

AFM Customer Service Portal Core Team

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden stands with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS)) AFM Customer Service Portal Core Team on the patio at USDA in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015. The AFM Customer Service Portal Core Team received their award for implementation of an innovative custom broad scale customer service platform making service transparent, efficient, standardized, and track-able by both customers and leadership. The door to the left leads out into the central hallway. Behind it (obscured by the open door) is a door leading to the Butler's Pantry. The open service portal allowed hot food to be passed to the Butler's Pantry without opening the door. (There, the food was placed on serving trays and plates before being moved into the Dining Room.)

The central island in this room contains steam-heated warming ovens, whose doors are visible here.

UPDATE - I have received a response from Peter at Joby that offers replace the pod, answers my detailed ???'s regarding their product and asks for further information on the failure.

I wrote to Joby on Monday regarding my broken @ 3 days old, Gorillapod Focus tripod leg. Both to 100percent@joby.com and info@joby.com. I followed up on Tuesday, 24 hrs later, via their web site customer service portal, on the Flickr Gorillapod Love pool and a customer service addy peter@joby.com I found on above portal. Here it is Thursday morning as I decide to process and use this image for yesterday's 365 image. Still not a peep from Joby. Yes I have checked my spam filter (@ mail server level), everyday, multiple times.

I had very high hopes for the Gorillapod to replace my Gitzo Weekend tripod on our long backpacking trips making images to submit to my stock agencies. I could've reduced my pack weight by over 1 lb with this tripod. My Nikon D700 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 is kinda weighty, so we've been shaving ounces and pounds this season. However with such slow customer service... meh

Am I being impatient? Is a less than 3 day wait for customer service expecting too much?

In recent times, Employee Self Service (ESS) has become a significant tool in the human resource management.

“Employee Self Services” is a web based application which enables the employees to edit and handle a lot of job-related information by themselves. This provides a great assistance to the management to do a double check on the information of individual employees.

Britain’s best-loved children’s hospital and charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH), contracted me to lead a two-year project (2001 to 2003) to modernise the hospital’s web presence and take its brand into the 21st century.

GOSH is both Britain’s first children’s hospital and a pioneering child health institution (along with its partner the Institute for Child Health). The hospital’s outstanding reputation meant the project was carried out under intense public, media and professional scrutiny, and required a keen awareness of new media developments and the needs of the hospital’s patients, their families and the public.

If you work in healthcare and would like to experience this level of success and achievement, then please contact me at my consulting website below: www.davidsouthconsulting.com

The project was developed in three, distinct phases. Screen grabs from these phases are now available for download and evaluation. They also include web traffic statistics. This unique snap-shot of a complex project as it unfolded, should prove useful for other e-health practitioners.

Adding insult to injury - not only is the frames-ridden Service Portal nigh-on unusable, but also the search results mechanism can't seem to add up. At a guess, I'd say that there are two notes that exist but are not 'Released'. Still not an excuse though.

This is the 'Service Tag' as well as the Central base disc from the frame and the small disc that goes on the back of the gun box. I may end up eschewing these in favour of some PVC or something from the hardware store, but they are useful for scaling purposes.

Ambulanceoncall is an integrated service portal for ambulance services, which is been developed and managed by an efficient and a professional experienced healthcare team.

At left are my notes on a design I was handed for an employee IT self-service system. At right is my suggested revision.
