The MFEs were welcomed sights at military exercises, such as Reforger, which often deployed troops far from their main exchanges.
The food wagon pictured above stands in a grove of trees near Germany's Rhine River.
The MFE pictured below was one of 15 food, retail and catalog mobile vans the Army & Air Force Service used to support the 1st Infantry Division in its annual NATO Reforger exercise.
The use of mobile exchanges dates back to World War II, delivering food, drinks, snacks and other products to American troops far from their installations.
MFEs were widely used in the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars of the early 2000s.
During the 1990s and 2000s, they also were used at the scenes of hurricanes, tornadoes and other acts of Mother Nature to serve first responders and National Guard members engaged in community relief efforts.
The MFEs are proof of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service's motto, "We go where you go."
