06.12.22. First South Yorkshire have adopted a specific style of destination display to denote short workings, in which the actual destination is followed by the word 'ONLY'. This seems to serve its purpose although some may wonder whether the bus is diverted from its normal route such that intermediate points are omitted. The display illustrated here ('Herdings terminus ONLY') may also cause some confusion as no journeys on service 1A now go beyond Herdings, but the point of the display is to show that the service no longer runs through to Norton Avenue as it did up to the beginning of October. Bus 63001 with its new 'Escafeld' titles was photographed picking up in Cumberland Street in Sheffield city centre. (Photo taken 6 Dec 2022, posted 10 Jan 2023)
Semi-rare mileage along the R&N is the weekly trip of the 2nd Tamaqua job (YJQA,QADE,QAJT etc...) up the Delano and Morea runners to serve Poly Plastics near Delano. This job usually rates the only SD38 to stretch it's legs on the mainline. The circuitous route takes them north on the Reading from Tamaqua to Haucks then a jaunt on the RDG Catawissa Branch to one of many "Hazleton Junctions" in the area near Quakakke then along a stretch of track built in 1989 (the Lofty connection) to a switch called Delano Junction where the train reverses onto the former Lehigh Valley track now known as the Delano Runner. Before reaching Delano the Morea runner breaks off (at Morea Jct, nee Laurel Jct) and brings the crew another mile or so to Poly Plastics. The Morea runner continues several more miles to an embargoed anthracite load-out in Morea. Got it?
Anywho here's QADE (Tamaqua-Delano) switching out some storage tanks left on the runner past the Poly Plastics switch. Word is a few hundred more tanks are on the way....
The caption above is what I typed a couple months ago. Now I feel almost self conscious posting R&N stuff from my spring trip since a lot of you guys have been doing so much great stuff. Much has changed already. Coal business is rolling heavy again as it was very light while I was there during the peak of the pandemic. The Pittston pups have been split up and one has been leading the southbound NRRB for over a month. The F units seem to be running multiple times a week. The area in front of the station in Tamaqua has been torn up to build a new station platform. The fight with the city of Jim Thorpe has ended and 425 is leading tourist trains north from there into the Lehigh Gorge. Another engine has been painted in the Reading scheme, a black former NS GP38-2 is running around in service and one of the CSx SD50-2s has introduced an entirely new paint scheme. All of that in the 2 and a half months or so since I left the area.
Seltaist first appeared in the form of a divine statue. She was forged by the remains of a great one and served by sharp scholars known as Eladonian’s. The remains of the great one were so peculiar it was difficult for the tribe to identify which entity they may have come from however Themia believes that Seltiast is closely related to Gheos, a former goddess of inspiration as they both represent similar ideals. When the Eladonian’s fell to devastation Commundus removed the statue, burning the holy object down to its core, and sentencing his former comrades to gruesome deaths. Years later a strange creature stumbled upon a chamber filled with dozens of corpses and the remains of Seltiast, by performing a ghastly ritual it was able reanimate her spirit however this act likely led to the creatures own demise.
Seltiast is a compassionate spirt who now looks after the suffering, and unwanted, spreading prosperity and telepathically communicating to the congregations who gather in worship of her. The face and claws of the entity resemble that of her former body, and connect to the spirit as if fused on. Just beyond her back are tentacles capable of absorbing, or deflecting attacks. Each of these tentacles carries a powerful blessing gifting her with the ability to perform miracles all while leaving behind a blue aura. Many of her believers have taken a liking to the Eladonian’s, striving to acquire heaps of information on this special race, and mimicking their best qualities. Seltaist is well aware of the Eladonian’s eventual fate, she is impelled by their memories, and continues to uphold a similar structure to the one they established. Though the goddess is unaware of any potential survivors, perhaps the remaining may continue the path they once begun or pledge themselves to the will of another entity. Alternatively their existence will serve a greater purpose

The Western Frankish Tower, located within the Paphos Castle complex in Paphos, Republic of Cyprus, holds a rich and intriguing history that spans several centuries. This architectural marvel serves as a testament to the island's tumultuous past and the influences of various civilizations that have shaped its destiny. In the following 1000 words, I will take you on a journey through time, unraveling the captivating story of the Western Frankish Tower.
The history of Paphos Castle itself dates back to the Byzantine period, with the original structure constructed in the 13th century as a fortification against Arab raids. However, it was during the reign of the Frankish Lusignan dynasty that the castle underwent significant transformations. In the 13th century, after the conquest of Cyprus by Richard the Lionheart, the Western Frankish Tower was added to the existing fortifications, contributing to the castle's imposing presence.
The Western Frankish Tower served multiple purposes throughout its history. Primarily, it acted as a defensive stronghold, strategically positioned to protect the harbor and the surrounding area from potential threats. With its solid walls and commanding position overlooking the sea, the tower became an integral part of Paphos' defense system.
During the medieval period, Cyprus faced numerous challenges, including raids by Arab pirates and conflicts between various European powers vying for control over the island. The Western Frankish Tower played a vital role in these turbulent times, serving as a refuge for the local population and offering shelter during times of siege.
Over the centuries, as the geopolitical landscape shifted, Paphos Castle and the Western Frankish Tower came under the control of different rulers. Following the fall of the Lusignan dynasty, Cyprus fell under the dominion of the Republic of Venice in the late 15th century. Under Venetian rule, the castle underwent further modifications and fortifications to enhance its defensive capabilities.
In the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire expanded its reach into the Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus fell under Ottoman control. The Western Frankish Tower and the rest of Paphos Castle became part of the Ottoman defensive network, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding the island's western coast.
During the Ottoman era, Paphos Castle and the tower underwent further alterations to accommodate the changing needs of the ruling empire. Mosques, storage rooms, and other structures were added within the castle walls, reflecting the Islamic influence that characterized this period. The Western Frankish Tower, with its medieval origins, stood as a reminder of the island's past under Frankish and Venetian rule.
The end of the Ottoman era came in the late 19th century when Cyprus was handed over to the British Empire. With British control, Paphos Castle and the Western Frankish Tower lost their strategic importance and were no longer actively used for military purposes. However, the historical and architectural value of the castle began to attract attention, leading to efforts to preserve and restore the site.
In the mid-20th century, Paphos Castle underwent extensive renovations to restore its former glory. The Western Frankish Tower was carefully preserved, with its distinctive features and medieval character maintained. The castle complex became a significant tourist attraction, showcasing Cyprus' rich history and offering visitors a glimpse into its past.
Today, the Western Frankish Tower stands as a striking testament to the island's diverse heritage. Tourists and locals alike are drawn to its imposing structure, which combines medieval fortifications with traces of Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman influences. The tower serves as a cultural landmark, housing exhibitions and events that celebrate Cyprus' history and cultural identity.
In conclusion, the Western Frankish Tower within Paphos Castle encapsulates the dynamic history of Cyprus. From its origins as a Byzantine fortification to its modifications under Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman rule, the tower has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, serving as a reminder of the island's rich past and inviting visitors to explore its captivating history.

Down Town Tour late afternoon. It didn't take long to get really dark. I got off the Bus here to look around the World Trade Centre and 9 11 Tribute Memorial. It was really dark when I got back on the bus again.
Because I only had one full day in New York I took back to back Hop On Hop Off Buses. Some of the images are not very good as the bus would go over bumps etc,. I have kept them in as memorises of the day. I only got off the bus once so most of the photos were taken as we were travelling along. Sadly I just didn't have time to have a good walk around.
I woke to a lovely sunny day and not too cold with around 16c. As the day went on it clouded over a bit and cooled down. November 7, 2018 USA
Now here's a strange time slot for a train: ICN 794 Reggio di Calabria Centrale - Torino Porta Nuova via Milan. It leaves in the evening at 21:35 (so far, so good), stops at a number of small- and medium-sized towns until it reaches Paola shortly before 01:00 (nothing out of the ordinary still), and then trundles along quite leisurely until reaching Rome (Tiburtina station) at 6:30 - and by then, it still has half of the country to cross! It serves Florence (Campo di Marte station) after 10:00 - despite being non-stop, it is half an hour slower than the regular Intercity trains with four intermediate halts. It loses another half an hour before calling at Bologna Centrale shortly after 11:30, reaches Milano Porta Garibaldi at quarter to three, and its final station, Torino Porta Nuova, at 16:40! One really has to be a diehard railway aficionado to take such a trip...
So, at 15:17, E402.180 is approaching its next stop in the endless list at Novara with train 794. Novara, 12-08-2016.
