these are for my second server, so in total, my website will run on four (old) xeons... four cores! ...eeeerm... ;-)

This old secretary will eventually be the home of my home server, NAS and routing equipment; with a touch screen interface! Visible here is my DSL broadband modem and the DIR-825 router.

I'd been following the server gzip status of ColdFusion for years, but it was only recently that ColdFusion supported it well, and even then it took a few hacks to make it happen, but check out this weekly graph of network traffic after we enabled it.
Went from a 5-6Mbps average load to around 2.5-3 Mbps load average. This should theoretically make the server a tad slower to compress every page before it sends them out, but also the server should be overall faster as there is more bandwidth to move pages out.

I spent much of the afternoon cleaning up the corner where the router, ethernet switch, and wireless access point live, and moving the server's new monitor over there. Previously it was an insane mess of cables, power strips, and dust bunnies. The ancient ASA maxi-tower server and two old CRT monitors will be going to the e-waste recycling event this weekend... and not coming back. My two trusty network admins (The Scream and Hello Kitty) provide on-site support.

Currently, Boot and Nuking the hard drives. ( dban.sourceforge.net/ ). Once the drives were nuked, I installed Ubuntu Server 6.06 LTS on it. Had to surf around to find some instructions on setting up RAID on it, but I finally got it running. Not a bad free toy.
