Senator Mike Gabbard hosted students of the National Defense University's Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the Capitol on April 12, 2013. The students, which included U.S. and foreign military officials, were in Hawai‘i to get an overview of the state's renewable energy efforts. They presented Senator Gabbard with a certificate for his "substantial contributions" to their studies. Pictured (back row – L to R) are Bradley McDonald (Lt. Colonel, U.S. Air Force), John Benedict (Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army), Erica Clarkson (Lt. Senator Stabenow held a press conference with local residents and business owners at the Northwestern Marathon gas station in Southfield to discuss efforts to combat rising gas prices. With gas prices at a new record-high across the state, Michigan families and small businesses are struggling while oil companies are making the largest corporate profits in history. As Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Stabenow held a hearing earlier this year to investigate how much market manipulators are driving up prices and to explore ways to strengthen American made biofuel industries and other alternatives to foreign oil.

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is the junior United States Senator from Vermont.
Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history. A self-described democratic socialist, he favors policies similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe, particularly those instituted by the Nordic countries. He caucuses with the Democratic Party and has been the ranking minority member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders attended Brooklyn College before transferring to and graduating from the University of Chicago. While a student, he was a member of the Young People's Socialist League and active in the Civil Rights Movement as a protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1963, he participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Sanders settled in Vermont in 1968, and ran unsuccessfully for Governor and U.S. Senator in the early to mid-1970s as a member of the Liberty Union Party. As an independent, Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, in 1981. He was reelected to three more two-year mayoral terms before being elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the United States House of Representatives in 1990. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to succeed the retiring Republican-turned-independent Jim Jeffords in the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected by a large margin, capturing almost 71% of the popular vote.
Since his election to the Senate, Sanders has emerged as a leading progressive voice on issues such as income inequality, universal healthcare, parental leave, climate change, LGBT rights, and campaign finance reform. He rose to national prominence on the heels of his 2010 filibuster of the proposed extension of the Bush-era tax rates for the wealthy. Sanders is also outspoken on civil rights and civil liberties, and has been particularly critical of mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act, as well as racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. He has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy, and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War.
Sanders is a candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for President in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Exploring Issues in and Policy Solutions for Credit Card Markets
During the last three decades, credit cards have transformed the American economy. They have revolutionized the daily mechanisms for payment and borrowing, and in the process, have contributed to the mass consumerism that distinguishes American culture and supports the health of our economy. The days of the “one credit card family” are a thing of the past, with some 1.5 billion cards in circulation today—five for every American man, woman, and child.
Not surprisingly, the rapid growth of the credit card market has been coupled with a dramatic rise in consumer debt (as of September 2006, credit card debt in the U.S. totaled $857 billion) and record profits for the industry. This relationship raises some important questions. For example, why are credit cards so much more common in America than in Japan and the United Kingdom? Why do credit card companies continue to issue cards to customers who are such bad credit risks? What aspects of credit cards most often lead consumers into debt traps? What specifically can policymakers do to solve these problems, and are these solutions politically realistic?
As part of the Center’s ongoing efforts to highlight and address consumer debt issues as a key component of our Economic Mobility Program, CAP assembled a distinguished group of experts who discussed these questions and the policy options for moving forward. First, Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan who commissioned the recently released GAO report entitled "Credit Cards: Increased Complexity in Rates and Fees Heightens Need for More Effective Disclosures to Consumers" delivered opening remarks. This was followed by a panel discussion with Ronald Mann, the author of the book, Charging Ahead: The Growth and Regulation of Payment Card Markets, and David Wood, Director of the aformentioned GAO report on credit cards. Also, the Center's Director of the Economic Mobility Program, Derek Douglas, discussed a Center report regarding a safety rating system for credit cards.

The 1908-09 Ottawa Senators were a powerhouse hockey team. In a 12-game Eastern Canada Hockey Association season the Senators finished first with a record of ten victories and just two losses and thus earned Stanley Cup bragging rights for that year. Of the eight players shown in this old image five would one day be inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame—Fred 'Cyclone' Taylor, Marty Walsh, Percy LeSueur, Billy Gilmour and Bruce Stuart.
After war erupted in Europe six years later LeSueur and Gilmour were two of thirty-two future hall-of-famers who set aside their hockey gear to take up a soldier's tools in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In contrast to more than a hundred Canadian hockey players who died doing their duty as soldiers in the war, LeSueur and Gilmour survived.
One of the champion Senators of 1909 never had the opportunity to volunteer for the CEF. Three years after his Cup-winning season in Ottawa, Ed Dey was playing with the Halifax Socials of the MPHA—Maritime Professional Hockey Association. In January 1912 he was fined $50 for an on-ice assault of 'Patsy' Seguin of the Halifax Crescents. It is frequently observed that those who live by the sword, die by the sword. A month after assaulting Seguin, Dey was indeed dead—the result of a body check delivered in a MPHA game.
There was a sequel to the story: Seguin was another of the men who transformed themselves from hockey players into soldiers. He paid the ultimate price for the decision: on August 8, 1918, the first day of the Canadians' "Last Hundred Days" campaign, Seguin was killed in action while fighting in the Montreal-based 24th Battalion.
Walsh, the hall-of-famer, was another who died an untimely death. In 1915 he succumbed to tuberculosis at age 30.
Fame and glory are fleeting. In the years 1903 to 1908 Fred Lake was on top of the hockey world. By the mid-1930s ill health had brought him low. On the last day of November, 1937, he was found dead in his vehicle, a hose from the exhaust pipe connected to the inside of the car.

Marine Week – Downtown Nashville, Tennessee
The Marines invaded Downtown Nashville for a week back in September. The event was called Marine Week. I was fortunate to have some time to capture some images over a 3 day period. One of these days included a memorial for the 911 victims. By chance, I managed to capture some photos of US Senator Bob Corker and the Mayor of Nashville, Megan Barry. I was also fortunate to catch a mock invasion by air and sea. Out of almost 80 images, I will be posting just a few on Flickr. You can read about my adventure and see many more photos on my blog. Set back and enjoy the slideshow! I had a blast capturing these images. To go directly to my blog, click the link here: www.shutteringthrulife.com/marine-week-in-nashville-oorah/

With incredibly high gas prices across Michigan, Senator Stabenow is cosponsoring bipartisan legislation to prevent foreign states—such as members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)—from conspiring to keep driving up oil prices. The No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2011 (NOPEC) breaks down judicial roadblocks, giving the Department of Justice the ability to enforce anti-trust laws against OPEC member nations engaging in illegal cartel activities such as price fixing and limiting the production or distribution of oil.
