The first Semper Opera house was destroyed by fire in 1869. The second was destroyed by firebombs in 1945. This is the third opera house to stand on this spot.
Built in 1841, the Semper Opera is the Saxon State Opera, concert hall of the Saxon State Orchestra, and home to the Semperoper Ballet. It is named after the architect who built it, Gottfried Semper. After a fire in 1869, the citizens of Dresden demanded he be the one to rebuild, even though he was in exile for his involvement in a May 1849 Dresden uprising. So his son rebuilt it in 1878.
