On our last day in Iceland we did the South Coast Tour ... heading south towards Vik, the southernmost town on the island ... passing through a very different part of Iceland.
From Reynisfjara we headed back towards Reykjavik, making a couple of stops en route, one of those being the waterfall known as Seljalandsfoss.
Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. It is situated between Selfoss and Skógafoss, where Route 1 (the Ring Road) meets the track going to Þórsmörk.
This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 metres (200 ft) over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is sometimes possible to walk behind the waterfall ... but not this day ... it was treacherously icy.
Iceland, Seljalandsfoss: Seljalandsfoss, one of the most famous waterfalls of Iceland, seen from a path behind it. The water coming from the glacier of Eyjafjallajökull, and flowing in the river of Seljalandsá, falls here about 60 metres (200 feet) from the top of a steep cliff.

Seljalandsfoss is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Southern Iceland, and one can actually go around it if weather permitting.
You can walk all the way behind Seljalandsfoss. The most amazing thing about this waterfall is that there was no one else there...I had this beautiful feature all to myself practically.
I spent a couple of hours here just sitting and admiring it.
Returning to previously visited locations when the weather improved was a real treat indeed.
The Ring Road (Route 1) goes around the outskirts of Iceland and offers an amazing amount of versatility and beauty in it's landscapes.
This is Seljalandsfoss. It is 200 feet high and an incredible sight to behold. The wind blew the water to the back, front and sides of the waterfall which formed some intense ice formations.
Traveling up the cliff and around behind the waterfall was very treacherous with all of the ice. It was very wet and slippery, people were falling left and right. I had to frequently dry my lens from the spray of the waterfall as well. That said, it was a really awesome feeling being behind the falls, feeling their power from up close.

Seljalandsfoss is a beautiful waterfall, easily accessible off the Ring Road in Iceland. There are several views that are rewarding. Many people like the view from behind the falls, which looks interesting if you're there at sunset. We were here mid-day, so we chose to take a longer view that showed the length of the cliffs looking toward the Icelandic highlands.

Seljalandsfoss is a huge waterfall in south Iceland, where you can actually walk behind the waterfall. It's right next to Gljufrafoss, which is a smaller waterfall that you can hike into a cavern.
Seljalandsfoss, South Iceland
Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in Iceland. It was a waypoint during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6. Seljalandsfoss is situated in between Selfoss and Skógafoss at the road crossing of Route 1 (the Ring Road) with the track going into Þórsmörk. This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 metres (200 ft) over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is possible to go behind the waterfall.
Seljalandsfoss is arguably Iceland's most famous waterfall because you can hike through the back of it and view it from the inside out. I read that it is the only known waterfall where it is possible to do this. The waterfall drops 200 feet from rocks above into a serene little pool below.

Seljalandsfoss er 60 m hár foss í Seljalandsá í Rangárþingi eystra. Fossinn er þekkt ljósmyndamótíf, en hann breyttist talsvert í flóði árið 1976 og kom þá skarð í bjargbrúnina þannig að fossinn breiðir ekki eins mikið úr sér eins og áður.
Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall drops 60 m (197 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Visitors can walk behind the falls into a small cave. (wiki)
