My friend Staci has a 16-year old Manx cat named Peanut. He and I are buddies, as I occasionally help out taking care of him when Staci is out of town. On this occasion he was a less-than-pretty sight, with a minor but infected wound on his face, so I looked for an alternative way to take his picture.
He's all better now.
I've gotten behind in Flickr posts and comments; unavoidable stuff I had to deal with at the end of the week. Think "plumbing". You don't want to know the details. All fixed now. I'll try to catch up today.
Up next: photography of cows. Yes. Cows. This is cattle country, and what I photograph is life, so of course I stop for cows (especially when my nature and wildlife schtick isn't going so well). I think the next two images will be a little... different.

One of the landmarks in front of our special beach house is an island which has been in existence since we were children. In a drawer in the special "writer's room" was an old watercolor of the island. I played with the image as I wanted to get inside of the art.
My sister and I have been rereading "A Gift From The Sea" and sharing similar thoughts and feelings about islands. Anne Morrow Lindbergh compared her vacation to an island in time where "People, too, become like islands, self-contained, whole and serene; respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverence before the miracle of another individual."
We were blessed with a week like that. Although we were together, we all had many moments of solitude.
“It is in deep solitude that I find the gentleness with which I can truly love my brothers.
The more solitary I am the more affection I have for them ….
Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are,
not for what they say.”

The Tropenmuseum presents the lifelike sculpture of Omomá. This sculpture by Dutch artist Roy Villevoye was purchased in 2010 by the museum. The lifelike sculpture represents a man from New Guinea. What makes this work special is the way it forces viewers to ask questions. Elements and people of New Guinea are a recurring theme in Roy Villevoye's work. He is interested in how culture works and how one culture develops in relation to others. What you think when you look at it? The Papua man looks tense, concentrated in front of him, what does he really look at? Who is that guy anyway? His bare feet and his tawny body betray a life outside the beaten track. What does the image do in the Tropical Museum?
Photo of a Papua man Omomá taken at theTropenmuseum. Papua comprises most of the western half of the island of New Guinea and nearby islands. Its capital is Jayapura. It's the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia. "Papua" is the official Indonesian and internationally recognised name for the province. During the Dutch colonial era the region was known as part of "Dutch New Guinea" or "Netherlands New Guinea". A lifelike sculpture of Omomá by Dutch artist Roy Villevoye.
Wie is die man eigenlijk? Zijn blote voeten en zijn tanige lichaam verraden een leven buiten gebaande paden. Wat doet het beeld in het Tropenmuseum?
You've heard all about Japan's capsule hotels. Well, here's the very first capsule architecture which gave birth to the concept, still fully intact and operational as offices and residential space in Shimbashi. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa, the Nakagin Capsule Tower was built between 1970 and 1972. Each of these little concrete 'boxes' is a fully self-contained unit, equipped with bed, tv/radio console, bathroom, and closet. (See more info on the construction).

Idea taken and modified from my earlier matchbox pinhole camera built. Constructed with a single sheet of cardboard which folds together into a self-containing box. 10mm focal length, 0.11mm pinhole diameter.
They’re for all to see
Selfcontained lovers
Welded orally
No run for cover
I’d join in the fun
If I had someone
But it seems I’m undone

bighouse or 8 house, housing and offices, ørestaden, copenhagen, denmark.
architects: BIG, bjarke ingels group, 2006-2010.
at 62.000 squaremeter, this new development in ørestad, copenhagen, was first marketed as "big-house" but for the parallel to be perfect, bjarke ingels would have had to rename his office enormous. the house is a giant. this is its short side.
these years of bad acronyms in architecture, with every second office name a four letter word, ingels did well with BIG. it contains both his own initials and a reference to the genuinely collective nature of his company, as well as describing the level of ambition, a sly reference to a great namesake and a nod to rem koolhaas' hugely influential essay on bigness which today reads as something of a manifesto for the work of BIG.
but wheras koolhaas had described bigness as outside the architect's influence - a given to be exploited for its urban potential - the moment he had done so, it became a desireable condition for his followers. that may simply be the logic of the avantgarde, but in the case of bighouse, it proved significant:
the original plan for the ørestad neighbourhood, lousy and out-of-scale as it is, nevertheless insists that a block is divided between several architects and developers. in that sense bighouse is an object of desire, contrary to planning yet willed into existence by authorities, designers, and developers so as to dwarf anything built for the purpose of housing since the moral collapse of late modernism in the nineteen sixties.
the size of the thing does allow for a programmatic complexity of housing typologies, communal facilities, businesses, and engaging patterns of movement unpresidented in copenhagen. the architect explains it better than I can, but I cannot promise you it will be a succes. within the gross stupidity that is the ørestad plan, BIG's ambition to make each building a selfcontained piece of urbanism makes sense, albeit a quixotic kind of sense.
if anyone can pull it off, it is these guys. recently, they have been publishing one brilliant project after the other. the Danish pavillion for the shanghai expo 2010 stands out, its spatial poetry matched by the virtuosity of its steel constructions, calculated by arup. and that was matched if not surpassed by their proposal for the extension of asplund's woodland crematorium, the best by far in a competition where everyone else disappointed, sadly including the jurors who picked a lesser project by a local architect.
BIG's competition entry was a beautiful reminder of the playfulness and the seriousness, asplund could bring together in a single building. see it here but be warned, the PDF file is 14 Mb. significantly, these projects are traditional, discrete pieces of architecture far removed from the excesses of koolhaas' theories of bigness. and koolhaas is probably the right place to end:
"not only is bigness incapable of establishing relationships with the classical city - at most it coexists - but in the quantity and complexity of the facilities it offers, it is itself urban...it does not take its inspiration from givens too often squeezed for the last drop of meaning; it gravitates opportunistically to locations of maximum infrastructure; it is, finally, its own raison d'etre"
- I read this as koolhaas at his most hopeful rather than prophetic. the text is sixteen years old. where do you think the intellectual embrace of opportunism in the recently departed boom economy has left us? did the earth move for you?

This is my Nikon FG, made in the early 1980's , coupled to a self contained autofocus 28-70mm AI-s zoom from Vivitar. This lens was made in about 1985, about 4 years after the Canon 35-70mm selfcontained autofocus FD zoom and has features the Canon doesn't...such as the ability to continuiously refocus. Based on the serial number beginning with 09 it would appear that this lens was manufactured by Cosina.
The FG is a nice camera body, though not as solidly made as earlier NIkon's such as the FM. The FG does offer AE and full program modes though, as well as electornically controlled shutter. There are two shutter speeds though that are purely mechanical so that the camera can be used even when the battery dies. Add the Nikon MD-14 motor drive, and you also get automatic film advance. Due to the light weight and the mechanical 'B' shutter speed, I've been considering using this for astrophotography with it coupled to a telescope for long exposures instead of the F2. The F2 has the advantage of having the 6x magnification finder attached but the disadvantage of being much heavier.

there is always that space there
just before they get to us
that space
that fine relaxer
the breather
while say
flopping on a bed
thinking of nothing
or say
pouring a glass of water from the
spigot
while entranced by
nothing
that
gentle pure
space
it’s worth
centuries of
existence
say
just to scratch your neck
while looking out the window at
a bare branch
that space
there
before they get to us
ensures
that
when they do
they won’t
get it all
ever.

aka Africa Beach
Africa Beach is a labor-of-love operated by a retired advertising executive who quit the rat-race in Vancouver, BC for the realative obscurity as bed-and-breakfast operator at Chesterman Beach on Vancouver Island (8km south from Tofino, BC). Baku, said operator, only has one cabin so if you want to feel really pampered you better get in line.
Unlike the Wickaninnish Inn (just down the beach), Baku only has to cater to one set of guests at a time -- not hundreds.
N.B. Baku's cottage is not on the beach but in the bush at 1250 Lynn road (90m from Chesterman Beach by footpath)
mountain dwellings: housing, parking and office space, ørestad, copenhagen 2005-2008.
architects: project begun by PLOT, completed by jds architects and BIG.
there is no limit to the awfulness of the town planning behind copenhagen's new ørestad neighbourhood. you name a textbook mistake, they've made it...
it is only in this negative context that BIG's oddly selfcontained but intense pieces of urbanism in ørestad can be fully understood: there are no streets to add anything to, no legible urban spaces, no lessons learnt from the mistakes of modernism or the virtues of central copenhagen.
and so the yellow strip of light we are looking at in the centre of the image represents nothing short of a miracle along the lines of the little green plant in pixar's wall-e: it's a street-level café, a very nice one even, in the middle of nowhere. residents seem to have embraced the place and small wonder: their only choice used to be fast food at the local mall.
it could only have happened in one of bjarke ingels' buildings out there, designed as they are to be exceptions, exceptions to the trivial context where other architects have managed to fit in a little too well.

Another example of the "halfway there" point in adding autofocus to interchangeable-lens SLRs, Vivitar now offers an autofocus telephoto lens.
This is a completely self-contained autofocus lens with no camera communication, and thus can be adapted to several brands of lens mount. There is a three-AAA battery pack at the bottom and a semi-silvered element in the light path which allows the focus-detect sensors to operate.
A hut like the ones we where living in. The huts at Green Turtle Lodge are powered by their own little solar panel on the roof and has self-composting toilets.
Our friends Donald and Marion Maciver recently opened this bed and breakfast / self catering accommodation beside their home in Laxay on the Isle of Lewis, and last week I took these photographs for them.
The Sigma 8-16mm took care of the angles, and some gentle HDR toning in Photoshop and Lightroom took care of the light and shadow. I also used Photoshop to combine the images and add the text.
We wish them well !

10 September 2007: My new power pack for my Dynalite kit. Just built today. Still charging it. It's made from an Exeltech XP1100 1100 watt pure sine wave inverter and two AGM 12 aH batteries in parallel, giving me 24aH. I have two RC-car peak chargers to give me the ability to charge them in the field and give me full diagnostics on the batteries (how much capacity was used per battery each time, etc.).
I'll post how many flashes I get when I have it charged and have a chance to test it. Heavy beast at 32.5 lbs with the case. It's a DIY version of the Dyna-Lite XP1100, at 1/3 the cost and at least theoretically higher performance.
I used 10 AWG wire and Dean's Ultra Plugs for less resistance, but the thick wire is a pain in the butt to solder and work with. If you try this on your own, use 12- or 14 AWG wire and Dean's Ultra Plugs. Much easier and more forgiving/flexible.
The Inverter is bolted to a piece of masonite at the bottom of the case, the two batteries are attached with zip ties. Keeps 'em from sliding around.
