You think it’s easy managing more than 35,000 acres of land and nearly 645,000 acres of water? Of course not. Here, volunteers clean out trails and clear invasive species at Eau Galle Recreation Area, Spring Valley, Wis. Volunteers are essential to the St. Paul District’s mission. Day 57 - 6/14/09 - Mami always has my back.
Selfless, sacrificial, giving and humble... qualities that make for an excellent mother-father. My dad died when I was just two, leaving my mom with 3 kids, my sister who was 5 and my brother was 6 months. I was born in the Bronx, but shortly after my dad passed away we moved back to the DR where I lived up until I was 9.
My mom never remarried, never forced another dad on us and worked hard to put food on the table. When we moved back to the US in 91, she tried going back to college and was close to completing her associates when our financial situation got tougher. So tough, some days she couldn't go to class because she didn't have train fare. The opportunity to work a maintenance job with a union came up, and ever since then my mom has been busting her behind. She's worked hard to get us out of the projects, buy her own home and support us.
My mom is truly the most selfless person I know. I know everyone thinks their mom is the best, but I don't think mine is, I know it!

Did our photographer's selfless offer bring lots of responses? Did it hell! Four. Three from blokes (one wanted Beaumes de Venise, one wanted a nice warming claret, one wanted a free holiday...) and the fourth from a farmer's wife in Scotland who was so frozen doing the lambing that an afternoon under anyone's duvet sounded preferable!
The good news is that it snowed another 20cm yesterday, Tuesday, it's still snowing now, and a lot more snow is forecast this week. We're pretty much guaranteed good conditions until May. The bad news is that book...
