Hessen Minister President Volker Bouffier recognized several U.S. military civilians and an American Soldier during the annual Hessentag celebration, this year in Bensheim, June 6-15.

American Century

By Michael Vance

There are basically two ways to live. You can be selfless and make life better by trying to overcome personal flaws that hurt people, or you can be selfish and make life more wretched by wallowing in activities that hurt every-one. Most people do a bit of both.

The comic book American Century wallows in selfish.

"The daily grind of post-war America was grinding Harry Block beneath its heel," reads an opening caption that sets this title's stage and tone. "So Harry stepped out and reinvented himself…. He left his marriage, his job and his troubles, choosing instead to live his new and improved life as Harry Kraft, a no-nonsense Joe with his own set of rules."

So Harry responds to a world that grinds him beneath its heel by grinding it beneath his boot. How noble.

Huh? you query. Try the following rewrite from a different view.

The responsibilities of earning a living and being a husband and citizen were hard, so Harry abandoned them, deserting his wife and breaking his vows, mooching off of society and skirting his troubles, choosing instead to live for no one but Harry who had his own rules.

So, thinks Harry, since life is terrible, let's make it worse. Life, after all, is all about Harry.

Yeah, yeah, this little slice of nasty life is technically well written and certainly well drawn. But, unlike most reviewers who think content above criticism, this one offers this comment on the content of American Century: raspberries.

Or, if my comment were written by this comic book's creative team: @#@!*%@*!!!&%@ (*%@#!!!!!!!!

Because of profanity, perversity, nihilism and just plain nastiness, the "Suggested for mature readers" on the cover of this issue is misleading. American Century is for immature readers.

Many brave and selfless lifeboat crew are remembered in their local communities. However, the RNLI Memorial sculpture in Poole, Dorset, is the only place where each and every one of them is named together.

This memorial serves as a source of inspiration for current and future generations of lifeboat crew, lifeguards, supporters and fundraisers. It reminds us that there are still people who volunteer to carry out selfless acts of heroism to help others; and we will always remember their sacrifice. In most cases, the names listed on the memorial saved the lives of others before losing their own.

Sam Holland’s sculpture, depicting a person in a boat saving another from the water, symbolises the history and future of the RNLI in its most basic and humanitarian form. Sam intended her design to be bold and simple, incorporating the elements of courage, loss and remembrance. Designed to be a beacon of hope, it honours those who continue to save lives at sea, as well as those lost in the act of lifesaving.

“There will always be exceptional children like Owen who selflessly help others.

“It’s entirely in keeping with this young man’s personality that his immediate response was to warn others to help carry those who were struggling and enter the water himself. This was incumbent on his selflessness.”

Giving a statement on behalf of the family after the inquest, Ruth Hyde of Broxtowe Borough Council said: “We have the happiest memories of Owen, who was a young, caring, lively and affectionate son of whom we are immensely proud.

“His enthusiasm for life meant he put his heart and soul into everything he did.

“He was sweet, innocent and selfless, and it is consistent with his character that he risked his own life to help save others who got into trouble in the water at Beeston weir.

“Owen tragically lost his own life, but we are so proud of what he did; of the young man that he was; how he lived his life to the full; and how he related to others.

“He was a wonderful son and he will be in our hearts forever.”

Man may travel far and wide or establishes a second home beyond the borders of his native land; Yet at the twilight years of life, he will travel back on the long road to the old Home where he spent the first 7 years of his childhood from the time he was born. - wilfredosrb

Everyman in his second childhood forgets all material things. His wife, children and grandchildren are mere friends and playmates. He remembers only the years as a child below 7 yrs of age and going home to the place where he was born.

Robert Frost, an American poet, wrote "Where Are The Old Men?", re-living in poetic lines the men who left England on the MayFlower. The men with their family who worked in American plantations until their old age. No one saw them leave, died and buried in American soil . . . -wilfredosrb

"[There is an] eternal principle that we are happier and more fulfilled when we act and serve for what we give, not for what we get."

Conference Talk:

For more information on this topic read "Unselfish Service," by Dallin H. Oaks, Ensign, May 2009, 93-96.

Thought:

[There is an] eternal principle that we are happier and more fulfilled when we act and serve for what we give, not for what we get.

Song:

"Shine On," Children's Songbook, p. 144.

Scripture:

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. (Matthew 16:24-25)

Lesson:

Tell your family they are going to do an activity called "It's New To Me." Divide your family into pairs. Have them silently read D&C 56:14-20 and find something they didn't know before. Have each pair tell each other what was "new" to them. Then ask each person to share what his or her partner said with the rest of the family. After everyone has finished, ask:

What does it mean to "counsel in your own ways"? (To do what you want rather than what God has commanded.)

Why do we sometimes do what we want rather than what God wants?

Why does the Lord chasten the rich in verse 16?

What is a "canker sore" and how does it feel?

How can riches cause spiritual "canker sores" on our souls? (Verse 16.)

Why do you think some rich people refuse to help the poor?

What are some reasons the Lord chastens the poor in verse 17?

Why do people steal?

What does verse 18 say the poor need to do to receive the Lord's blessings?

What are ways we as a family can help those in need? (Fast offerings, humanitarian aid, Perpetual Education Fund, local charities.)

Read the story below and ask your family:

How was Joseph Smith an example of what is taught in D&C 56:14–20?

What did you learn from this story?

Story:

Andrew Workman, an acquaintance of Joseph Smith, shared the following story:

"I was at Joseph's house; he was there, and several men were sitting on the fence. Joseph came out and spoke to us all. Pretty soon a man came up and said that a poor brother who lived out some distance from town had had his house burned down the night before. Nearly all of the men said they felt sorry for the man. Joseph put his hand in his pocket, took out five dollars and said, 'I feel sorry for this brother to the amount of five dollars; how much do you all feel sorry?' "

Activity:

Have each member of the family write on a piece of paper some act of kindness he may perform for someone else and sign his name. Put the papers in a box and pass the box around the family as music plays. When the music stops the person holding the box takes a paper from the box. He will then receive the kindness written on the paper.

Veterans Day, historically known as Armistice Day and officially recognized as a U.S. federal holiday beginning in 1938, celebrates the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and signaling the official end of World War I in 1918.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Valentina Garcia always has a smile she shares with everyone. She does not dwell on her specials needs or the fact that she is in a wheelchair. She is an extraordinary Special Olympic Athlete. Every year she performs in the Keshet Dance Company’s “Nutcracker on the Rocks,” dancing beautifully in the snow scene and inspiring others. Through her 13 years in Girl Scouts she has participated in many community service activities, along with helping out in the public library in the summer. Her passion to work with small children will no doubt lead her down a path of Early Childhood Education.

A Selfless Senior is a student who gives back to her community, who hasn’t been recognized by her high school, who has made a positive impact on others facing difficulties and whose character sets her apart.

After seven years of loyal and selfless service, our man Randall is moving on to greener pastures. Or, he is moving on to New Orleans anyway. He is one of the kindest and most thoughtful guys I have ever known and it has been a pleasure to work with him. Last night was his final shift at the Red Star. The usual cast of characters showed up to wish him well. Shots were taken, stories were swapped, fun was had by all. But, it is a testament to his uncanny ability to befriend everyone that several of the cast members from Twilight showed up to wish him well. These folks are shooting the newest installment of the ever popular vampire saga in Baton Rouge and we are honored that they have taken to Red Star as one of their regular haunts (no pun intended). But, I think we were all touched that they took the time out of their busy lives to show up and and say goodbye to Randall. Rami Malek, Omar Metwally, Billy Tangradi and the rest of the folks that I didn’t get to talk to, let me say that you are class acts and are welcome back anytime. And to Randall, best of luck in all your future endeavors. I am sure that your native goodness and joyful approach to life will take you far.
