Sometimes titles alone are worthy.

How Carter Beat the Devil is a perfect example. Having read that mysteriously original novel several years ago, I've now forgotten most of the storyline!

But still, that title lingers.

1. What intriguing title do YOU most remember... and why?

2. How do YOU beat the devil?

3. As a person of faith, I beat the devil by... looking outside of myself for that... something or SOMEONE beyond myself. I beat the devil by spurning the ever popular mantra in the self-help industry "If it's to be, it's up to ME" or "I am the Captain of my own destiny". That's a tiring burden.

4. I LIKE the self-help industry and read from it often. But I resist it's all to often existential pull to rely on self.

5. I stare down the devil and the reaper.

6. Tyler Perry, CS Lewis, GK Chesterton, Rick Warren, King David and Solomon all stare him down too. See for yourself.

The fat Buddha at town of Sarnath in India. Sarnath is a place located 10 kilometres north-east in Varanasi (famous for Buddhism) near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.

I don't know why I bought this self help book. It just kind of sounded interesting and they had an offer on in WHSmith, so it was half price.

This is the room that has been my home for the past 2 nights. Pretty basic, but it's got Internet access, an en-suite, albeit small, and a clock radio which is enough for me.

“Bhagavad-Gita is the most beautiful, perhaps the only true philosophical song existing in any known tongue” – so opined William von Humboldt, who wrote seven-hundred verses in its praise.

In this modern rendition, the beauty of the Sanskrit slokas is reflected in the rhythmic flow of the English verse of poetic proportions even as the attendant philosophy of the song that is Bhagvad-Gita is captured in contemporary idiom for easy comprehension.

It is a matter of consensus that Bhagvad-Gita in the present length of seven hundred slokas has many an interpolation to it, but no meaningful attempt has ever been made to delve into the nature and extent, not to speak of the effect of these on the Hindu society at large. The methodical codification of interpolations carried out here, for the first time ever, puts the true character of Gita in proper perspective. Identified here are hundred and ten slokas of deviant nature and or of partisan character, the source of so much misunderstanding about Bhagvad-Gita, the book extraordinary, in certain sections of the Hindu fold. In the long run, exposing and expunging these mischievous insertions is bound to bring in new readers from these quarters to this over two millennia old classic besides altering the misconceptions of the existing adherents.

Sally Hollis-McLeod, Self help manual, 2005-06, 28.5cm deep x 41.5 wide. Text and images on paper, wire-bound. Digital images created from handand digital-collage, photography, props, drawings.

Self help manual is an instance of hypertext, if that word was separated into two. And feminist philosophy. It arose from theoretical research, a thesis published in 2006 as Making Meaning Meaningful. The theoretical research, which was the larger part of a Masters degree (Massey University, 2006), investigated meaning-making in visual communications. It used the theory

of visual rhetorical figures and their operation (Jacques Durand, Paris, 1987) as one of three analytical tools. self help manual was the practical outcome—it

attempted the conundrum of ‘self help’ through a mixture of images, their small ‘illuminations’, their individual visual rhetorical figures, and texts.

There are footnotes (for the faint-hearted) which, contrarily, carry much of the real text, examining phases and stages of change in a woman's life and thinking. All texts are either self-created or arise from art history (surrealism, dada), feminism, design, and literature. Acknowledgements at the end are to three people who influenced part of the research: Jacquie Naismith (Massey University College of Creative Arts), Megan Jenkinson (photographer of The Virtues, her own published book), and Mary-Louise Browne (sculptor,

who once wrote Black and/or White. White and/or Black). International influences were Sue Coe (illustrator), Elizabeth Diller (architect) and Jorge Immendorf (artist).

Sally Hollis-McLeod is a designer and illustrator who lives in Auckland. Her work—and especially self help manual—is based on her feminism and political and social interests. She was a book and magazine designer and art director for most of her career, here and in Australia, as well as a lecturer in design at

a number of universities and polytechnics. Her heart is in textual and theoretical ideas that influence imagery. She now produces an on-line academic design research journal anti-po-des (www.anti-po-desdesignjournal.org.nz) and works on cultural and political projects.
