Try to appreciate the present moment and truly live it, rather than
using it up by feeling guilty about the past, or fretting about the
future. Regret for the past is a waste of spirit, and worrying about
the future is pointless.
Hanan Bilal, a community activist and motivator fromFlorida, asks,
“When will we stop living in the past and longing for our future?All
we really have is this moment. The question is what are we going to do
right now? Our time is now!”
The Past
That’s not to say that contemplation of past and future is verboten.
The Quran tells stories of the past in order to educate us.The
Messenger of Allah (sws) told us many stories of past Prophets and the
Bani Israa’il, for the same reason. We study world history, we study
the seerah of our Prophet and the lives of the Sahabah, because it
inspires and informs.
I taught a martial arts classseveral hours ago and I’m still reviewing
it in my mind, examining what I could do better next time. That’s part
of the learning process for me.
I have a sweet young daughter named Salma and I often think about my
time with her, something funny that she said, or the small gifts that
she likes to make for me. Yesterday she made me a card that says “I
love Baba.” A few days ago we had a poetry reading at our local
Muslimcommunity center, and in between readings our host told jokes.
For some reasonSalma positioned herself in the front row, and every
time our host told a joke I heard Salma laughing loudly, even though
I’m sure she did not understand the jokes (“do vegetarians eat animal
crackers?”). Crazy kid, ha ha. So yeah, I think about past moments.
But I’m not stuck in the past. I think about those moments because
they educate me or make me smile, so they become a part of my present
and future.
On the other hand, I occasionally think about my former marriage, and
those are usually not good thoughts, because I tend todwell on the
mistakes I made, and I feel sadness orguilt. I’ve already contemplated
deeply on that period in my life, and I’ve learned my lessons. I don’t
need to keep returning there in my mind, punishing myself. If Idid,
then I would indeed bestuck in the past, unable to move forward. That
is the kind of pointless regret that weighs people down and burdens
their spirits.
The Future
We plan for the future by having goals, getting an education, working
hard, saving money, always learning and improving ourselves. We plan
for our aakhirah by dedicating ourselves to Allah, worshiping, giving
our money to the poor and orphans, and humbling ourselves. We build
our futures step by step. But it’s not productive to sit around biting
our nails andthinking, “What if I fail my exam, oh, when will I get
married, what’s going to happen if I lose my job, how will I pay my
bills…” You make yourself sick andit doesn’t help.
Don’t worry, plan . There’s ahuge difference! Then acknowledge that
you don’t control the future. That’s Allah’s province. Trust in Him,
let him be your guide, find your security in Him.

Please try to memorise these duas اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي، وَمَالِي، اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي ، اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ، وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي، وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي Allaahumma ‘innee ‘as’alukal-‘afwa wal’aafiyata fid-dunyaa wal’aakhirati, Allaahumma ‘innee ‘as’alukal-‘afwa wal’aafiyata fee deenee wa dunyaaya wa ‘ahlee, wa maalee, Allaahum-mastur ‘awraatee, wa ‘aamin raw’aatee, Allaahum-mahfadhnee min bayni yadayya, wa min khalfee, wa ‘an yameenee, wa ‘an shimaalee, wa min fawqee, wa ‘a’oothu bi’adhamatika ‘an ‘ughtaala min tahtee O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and Your protection in this world and the next. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and Your protection in my religion, in my worldly affairs, in my family and in my wealth. O Allah, conceal my secrets and preserve me from anguish. O Allah, guard me from what is in front of me and behind me, from my left, and from my right, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being struck down from beneath me. اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي Allahumma innaka `afuwwun, tuhibbul-`afwa, fa`fu `anni O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ Rabbana amanna faghfir lana warhamna wa anta khairur Rahimiin 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.' [23: 109] رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الأبْرَارِ Rabbana faghfir lana dhunoobana wa kaffir 'ana saiyi'aatina wa tawaffana ma'al Abrar ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.’ [3:193] رَبَّنَا وَآتِنَا مَا وَعَدتَّنَا عَلَىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ Rabbana wa 'atina ma wa'adtana 'ala rusulika wa la tukhzina yawmal-Qiyamah innaka la tukhliful mi'aad Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise.[3:194] رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ Rabbana zalamna anfusina wa il lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lana kunan minal-khasireen "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." Sayyadul istegfar Sayyadul Istigfar | Best Istegfar | Muhammad ﷺ said it’s the best way to seek forgiveness of Allah Please try to memorise these duas اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوْءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ Narrated Shaddad bin 'Aus: The Prophet said, "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta. Khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa Wa'dika mastata'tu , A'uidhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu , abu'u Laka bi ni 'matika alai , wa abu'u bidhanbi faghfirli fa'innahu la yaghfiru-dh-dhunuba ill la ant ' If somebody recites this invocation during the night, and if he should die then, he will go to Paradise (or he will be from the people of Paradise). And if he recites it in the morning, and if he should die on the same day, he will have the same fate." Met Seerah down a side street in Manchester at a tiny little cafe, drinking from a tea pot with the Great British flag on. I asked to take a photo of him for this project and he was intrigued and got asking about my recent projects. He said he'd just been thinking about an image in his head, 'an Asian women in a burqa with just her eyes showing but drinking from the Great British tea pot!' he said it would be a lovely way to represent the way English culture is.. so mixed.
He lives around Manchester, but has been around the world in places like Ecuador for the past 12 years - Teaching English! i was pretty amazed by what he'd been doing! Was great to meet such a guy, can't wait for the 98 more strangers!
