FORT A.P. HILL, Va. – Three new security guards learned the power of pepper spray May 1 as part of their training here.
The Fort A.P. Hill Directorate of Emergency Services recently hired Joseph Figert, Jerry Mensah and Shasta Williams to be its first new security guards.
Their training includes being sprayed and performing a number of tasks while coping with the effects.

I discovered this location while driving to the franco-cypriot school in Nicosia, Cyprus. These are governmental buildings next to the police academy. The complex is to be destroyed in the near future. I was interested in catching the effects of time on official government owned buildings.

As the Grand Finale to a week-long national campaign of protests against French IT company ATOS Origin and its spinoff ATOS Healthcare which carries out the much-criticised Wirk Capability Assessments on behalf of the DWP, which has seen tens of thousands of severely sick and disabled people declared to be "Fit for Work" and thrown off their disability benefits, several hundred activists from DPAC (Disabled People Against Cuts), WinVisible, Disabled Activists' Network, UK Uncut, Right to Work Campaign, Unite the Union, the GMB Union, Occupy London and the National UNion of Students descended on ATOS' London headquarters to carry out what they had billed as the "ATOS Closing Ceremony" - a reference to ATOS' hugely derided sponsorship of the Paralympic Games which is, say the activists, an act of spectatular cynicism by a corporation which is currently contracted by the Cameron government to the tune of £100 million to conduct the much-feared medical assessments without any reference whatsoever to peoples' medical notes of histories.
For two hours the crowd chanted slogans, listened to oral testimonies from people whose lives have been badly affected by ATOS decisions, heard accounts of people driven into such despair by dealing with ATOS that they have comitted suicide, and also heard many accounts of seriously ill people thrown off their benefits by ATOS who have been forced to look for work - having been declared fit for work - and who have died shortly afterwards. The list of people irreperably harmed by ATOS' computer-driven tick-box assessment which cannot possibly take into account the huge range of physical and mental disabilities seems endless.
Following some dogged Freedom of Information requests by two Daily Mirror journalists earlier this year it is now known that an average of 32 sickness or disability benefit claimnants who have been thrown off their benefits by the DWP following an ATOS zero-point rating and placed in the Work-Related Activity Group or who have been put on Jobseeker's Allowance have died shortly afterwards. In many instances relatives of the deceased have claimed that the stress of being treated in such an inhumane way by ATOS contributed to their deaths.
During the protest at Triton Square the 500-strong crowd were entertained by a street theatre performance which saw a fraudulent "ATOS Miracle Cure" booth set up. The "ATOS Reverend" would lay hands on a disabled person and tell them that "by the power of ATOS you are no longer disabled", and sent them through the ATOS Miracle Cure arch, but sadly once through the arch the disabled people realised they had been tricked and they were still, of course, disabled... but worse was to come, as each disabled person was then confronted by an "ATOS Doctor" who stated that because they were now officially no longer disabled and were fit for work they could now be assigned to do their dream jobs, to which end the phoney doctor handed each person a sheet of paper on which was written "100 meter runner", "Bar Tender", "Mountain Climber" and other completely unsuitable job titles.
At around 2:30pm a section of the crowd took off and headed for Westminster where they picketed outside the Department for Work and Pensions, during which an over-agressive action by the police resulted in a disabled man's shoulder being broken as he was knocked off his wheelchair when police shoved protesters into him.

I was in Boston in June of 2012 for the HOW Design Conference. One evening I was walking around looking for things to shoot when I saw this closed Apple Store. It looked different and interesting to me, probably because the lighting was subdued and the glass spiral staircase was illuminated so beautifully. I decided to take a few images but I was getting a lot of reflection shooting thru the glass doors. To partially solve this issue, I pressed my lens right up against the glass which prompted the guard standing outside to walk over and inquire what the hell I was doing. I slowly explained the issue while I took 10 bracketed shots. I’ve found that when dealing with security or the police, it’s a good idea to stall. You might buy enough time to get the shots you want. It worked in this case.
While I buy most of my electronics and computer equipment online, I've learned to appreciate the excellent customer service I've experienced at Apple retail stores. The items I buy there tend to be fairly expensive Apple hardware that I can’t get elsewhere for a significant discount. When I buy, I’ve already done my research. I know exactly what I want. I might have a few technical questions I want answered before I purchase, so going to the Apple store makes sense to me. Apple retail store employees seem to be very well trained. They listen carefully to my questions, restate them to me to confirm they understand what I am asking for, and then usually ask a few good questions themselves, apparently to better understand my needs and enhance their ability provide a comprehensive answer. The first time I encountered this I was stunned and very pleased. I discussed it with my family and friends and frankly I wondered if I had just been fortunate and had met a particularly effective employee. But this was not the case. Every time I visited an Apple store and engaged the sales staff, my initial impression was reinforced. Apple has managed to inculcate a culture of retail excellence. With retailers struggling to survive in highly competitive markets, it makes me wonder why this is so rare. Why do most sales people not know their products? Why to retailers try to push unsuitable products on ill-informed customers, alienating them in the process? Why not provide solutions and earn customer loyalty?
It's sad and reflects poorly on other brick and mortar retailers that I find sales people who are helpful and knowledgeable about their products to be exceptional. I’ve never had an Apple employee try to hard sell me on something I didn't come into the store for, nor have they ever tried to jam an extended warranty down my throat. I have to go to Best Buy for that type of treatment which is one reason I avoid shopping there.
I heard recently that both Best Buy and Fry’s have implemented policies to match internet pricing if the customer provides proof that the item is in stock and if the online vendor is an authorized reseller. Given that both stores seem to sell everything at list price, this is a big change but probably won’t be enough to save them from extinction.

A long ceremonial boat is stored in a shed at the exit at the other end of Wat Xieng Thong in LP. My guide told me these are used during boat races, which I assume to be the Laos equivalent of the famous Hong Kong boat races. I liked the large 'naga' (serpent) themed decoration on the boat. A single lone bored security guard was sitting next to the boat, cooled by a single pedestal fan. Entry into the shed was restricted, so you had to see the boat from here. When the guard saw me aim my camera at the boat, he turned round and faced the other side. (Luang Prabang, Laos/ Lao PDR, April 2014)

Political artist Kaya Mar lampoons George Osborne on the Treasury Steps - London
On 04/10/2011 Political anti-War and anti-Cuts artist Kaya Mar displayed one of his many politically satirical oil on canvas caricatures lampooning dictators, war-mongers and heads of state - in this instance a naked George Gideon Osborne, (Chancellor of the Exchequer, architect of the swingeing austerity cuts to public services) naked, exposed, with one foot clumsily jammed in a large mop bucket as he claims to be cleaning up someone else's mess - as he held a brief one-man vigil on the steps of The Treasury, hoping that George Osborne might exit the building, catch sight of the painting and throw in the towel.
Mr. Mar's presence caused a bit of a panic and a flap amongst Treasury staff who were clearly alarmed that his painting could rapidly bring down the entire government, so he was told to get off the steps and stand on the pavement instead, thus safeguarding Her majesty's Brittanic Government from satirical peril.
There were no arrests, although a passing elderly American tourist muttered "Oh my, now THAT's disrespectful", before taking a photo of the painting, with a big grin on her face. Another man muttered something darkly about abolishing all money and waved a pamphlet around before vanishing across the road and into St. James' Park, but despite this flagrant act of sedition there was still no sign of a police van.
Kaya's work can be seen at www.kayamar.co.uk, which is in the process of being re-designed - and is on permanent display at the Museum of London and the Imperial War Museum.

As the Grand Finale to a week-long national campaign of protests against French IT company ATOS Origin and its spinoff ATOS Healthcare which carries out the much-criticised Wirk Capability Assessments on behalf of the DWP, which has seen tens of thousands of severely sick and disabled people declared to be "Fit for Work" and thrown off their disability benefits, several hundred activists from DPAC (Disabled People Against Cuts), WinVisible, Disabled Activists' Network, UK Uncut, Right to Work Campaign, Unite the Union, the GMB Union, Occupy London and the National UNion of Students descended on ATOS' London headquarters to carry out what they had billed as the "ATOS Closing Ceremony" - a reference to ATOS' hugely derided sponsorship of the Paralympic Games which is, say the activists, an act of spectatular cynicism by a corporation which is currently contracted by the Cameron government to the tune of £100 million to conduct the much-feared medical assessments without any reference whatsoever to peoples' medical notes of histories.
For two hours the crowd chanted slogans, listened to oral testimonies from people whose lives have been badly affected by ATOS decisions, heard accounts of people driven into such despair by dealing with ATOS that they have comitted suicide, and also heard many accounts of seriously ill people thrown off their benefits by ATOS who have been forced to look for work - having been declared fit for work - and who have died shortly afterwards. The list of people irreperably harmed by ATOS' computer-driven tick-box assessment which cannot possibly take into account the huge range of physical and mental disabilities seems endless.
Following some dogged Freedom of Information requests by two Daily Mirror journalists earlier this year it is now known that an average of 32 sickness or disability benefit claimnants who have been thrown off their benefits by the DWP following an ATOS zero-point rating and placed in the Work-Related Activity Group or who have been put on Jobseeker's Allowance have died shortly afterwards. In many instances relatives of the deceased have claimed that the stress of being treated in such an inhumane way by ATOS contributed to their deaths.
During the protest at Triton Square the 500-strong crowd were entertained by a street theatre performance which saw a fraudulent "ATOS Miracle Cure" booth set up. The "ATOS Reverend" would lay hands on a disabled person and tell them that "by the power of ATOS you are no longer disabled", and sent them through the ATOS Miracle Cure arch, but sadly once through the arch the disabled people realised they had been tricked and they were still, of course, disabled... but worse was to come, as each disabled person was then confronted by an "ATOS Doctor" who stated that because they were now officially no longer disabled and were fit for work they could now be assigned to do their dream jobs, to which end the phoney doctor handed each person a sheet of paper on which was written "100 meter runner", "Bar Tender", "Mountain Climber" and other completely unsuitable job titles.
At around 2:30pm a section of the crowd took off and headed for Westminster where they picketed outside the Department for Work and Pensions, during which an over-agressive action by the police resulted in a disabled man's shoulder being broken as he was knocked off his wheelchair when police shoved protesters into him.

The security guard at the Kyamulinga School in rural Uganda. I was told that the knowledge of his presence, a guy lurking around in the dark with a bow and arrow, was enough to encourage local malcreants to stay away from the school supplies. Interestingly, this man owns a pet turtle which he is very proud of. He showed it to me. The guard's salary is paid by Boulder based non-profit One School at a Time. Because schools are fundamentally unsecured (no looks or windows, etc.), precious school supplies are often the target of thieves.

I've been meaning to photograph the new "Tower" building at Rush Medical Center ever since it was built just over two years ago. Today, I finally drove down there.
The building by Ralph Johnson of Perkins+Will opened in January of 2012.
I walked around the building for 30 - 40 minutes taking photos. As I was aiming upwards for this, one of my last intended shots, I heard someone whistle. Uh oh, I knew exactly what it was, an over-eager security guard. Well, I'm not some trained seal so I just ignored it. After a few more unanswered whistles two security guards, frustrated by my lack of attention, approach. The usual conversation ensues:
Me: Can I help you?
Guard: What?
Me: I said, do you need something?
Guard: What are you taking pictures of?
Me: Why do you want to know? (answering questions with questions really bothers them)
Guard: You can't take pictures of the building!
Me: Why not?
Guard: Security (okay the Boston bombing was just two days ago, so he's edgy)
Me: This is a public sidewalk
Guard: No, its not
Me: Really? The hospital owns the sidewalk?
Guard: Yes
Me: (Well, I suppose its possible, but seems unlikely) Okay, I'll just cross the street and take photos from over there.
Guard: You know, I could have you arrested.
Me: No you couldn't.
Guard: I can call a cop
Me: Go right ahead. In fact, I insist. He will explain the First Amendment to you.
The guard leaves and I continue photographing the building from across the street . . . even though I was really finished, but hoping the cop would show up. After another 10 minutes I packed it in and went on my way.
FORT A.P. HILL, Va. – Three new security guards learned the power of pepper spray May 1 as part of their training here.
The Fort A.P. Hill Directorate of Emergency Services recently hired Joseph Figert, Jerry Mensah and Shasta Williams to be its first new security guards.
Their training includes being sprayed and performing a number of tasks while coping with the effects.
