The images of the past week or so, culminating in the death of a fellow human being, have brought back to me the reality of what, as children growing up in Northern Ireland, we've had to endure.
Things ARE different now and I don't want my child growing up with the fear of speaking out against what is WRONG. Murder is Murder is Murder - There can be no justification for taking a son, daughter, brother, sister, mother, father, cousin, neighbour, colleague, friend or EVEN "Perceived" enemy away from their loved ones, simply because their vision of the future is different from yours.
Anybody who tries to forge their country's future upon the death or murder of those whose ideals they disagree with, has lost the argument before they've begun.
What sort of United Ireland would we live in if we feared opposing the views of others, and if we faced death just because we disagreed with them ? Surely that’s akin to a regime !!!
Everybody (including those who murdered Ronan Kerr) is entitled to their views and aspirations - what they are not entitled to, is the right to murder people like Ronan.
This country no longer belongs to the Dinosaurs who tried to shape the Ireland of yesterday. Things have moved on and watching the youth of today, Catholic and Protestant, stand together in rejecting the violence that claimed the life of a 25 yr old Irishman should be enough to stop any self proclaimed hard-line Republican or Loyalist in their tracks and realise that times have changed and that the right thing to do is to dedicate the future of this Country to the inhabitants of the future.
PS - Sorry to burst everybody's bubble - but there are no separate afterlives. No individual PSNI, Garda, UVF, IRA, English, Irish, Catholic, Protestant, Christian, Muslim or Jewish conveyor belts to Paradise.
We're on the one road sharing the one load to God Knows Where.
RIP Ronan & Here's to better days ahead in your memory.
PSNI Inspector Alan Hutton (centre) pictured with fellow officers in Derry's Waterside as he surveys both the scene of an ongoing security alert at shrubland off Fountain Hill and, just across the River , the spot where two tyres on a lorry exploded on Tuesday evening causing damage to windows on nearby properties.
Mystery still surrounds the exact source of a loud explosion in Derry which was heard almost ten miles outside the city. A security alert was mounted in Spencer Road, Moore Street, Fountain Hill and the surrounding areas in the City's Waterside following reports of an explosion and at least one report of masked men having been spotted in the area.
However confusion remains after it transpired that at around the same time, a lorry on Derry's Cityside - Just across The River Foyle - suffered a blow out in which two tyres are believed to have exploded with such force that windows in surrounding properties were shattered.
The operation in the Waterside was scaled back allowing residents to return to their homes at lunchtime on Wednesday but the search of nearby waste shrubland and an area known locally as the quarry steps could take several more days as PSNI search for anything ontoward.
You know how it is when childhood memories come rushing back.
Like when you hear an old song on the radio that stirs an emotion, or catch a nostril full of a smell that you haven't smelt in years, or even try a bowl of Kellogg’s cornflakes and realise that you had forgotten how good they taste.
Well it was just like one of those moments, only with a Northern Ireland twist.
Having one's camera bag searched under the prevention of terrorism act.
As I stood there, in the shadow of Craigavon Bridge, during an ongoing security alert, with the sound of deserted streets ringing in my ears. I grabbed a lungful of air, which probably still carried a slight aroma of controlled explosion, and thought to myself, "Good old Northern Ireland - What a shit hole at times".
The searching officer promised to check out my Flickr site......Result !!

The Following Added 12th July 2009.
I received a private mail from one of the groups that I posted this and the picture of the van at the centre of a two day security alert to. The mail outlined concern expressed privately to the group moderator from several people who felt "Uncomfortable" with the "Strong political content" and the "Airing of political views"
I feel that the individuals responsible for these private messages have done themselves the disservice of failing to comprehend the context of my image postings and commentary. I also wish to post my response below, so that any others who experience a similar miscomprehension are afforded the benefit of explanation.
Hi XXXXXX,
Whilst I appreciate and respect your request to remove certain content as it may not necessarily be in keeping with your vision for the "Love xxxxxxxxx Group, I wish to clarify that my commentary on any of the photographs which I take is neither sectarian nor politically biased in any nature, but more a colourful tongue in cheek swipe at the nature of the world that we live in.
My photographs are reflective of all aspects of life in Northern Ireland and further a field and thankfully I have never felt restricted in either content or commentary as I hold no strong political or religious views.
My images have been used in both local and national press as well as forums and websites across the political and religious spectrum; I have covered everything from St.Patrick's Day to the Twelfth Celebrations and much more.
As this is your group I have no issues and fully accept your decision to remove some of my images, and as a broadminded individual I have no hard feelings regarding this. I would, however, like to point that the picture of the van at the centre of a two day security alert on the Craigavon Bridge and the police search document are reflective of the current climate here.
Just because I take a picture of a security alert, it doesn't mean that I am either supporting or condemning the subject matter, I am merely recording it. As for the document; again there is neither political nor sectarian commentary, merely a tongue in cheek satirical observation, on advice from a friend, I have obscured the officer’s rank number as a matter of courtesy.
I would be happy if you could pass this response on to those who felt "Uncomfortable" with my images, but these pictures are nothing more or less than those individuals will find day and daily in the pages of the various publications that adorn the shelves of their local newsagents. Pretending that these things don't happen doesn't change a thing. I am also happy to receive any correspondence from those particular individuals.
Images added to this particular group may have stretched the boundaries of artistic licence, but then again “Love” can be interpreted in a million different ways and sadly it is not always beautiful !
I also intend to include the above as an addition to one of the images in question but will not identify yourself or the group in question. I feel that this is important to outline my position to other people who may feel uncomfortable with any of the content in my work.
Regards, James.
PS I look forward to and will continue to post material which you and others may consider more fitting to the group.
Footnote. Sorry if the above seems a bit self righteous, but sometimes things require clarifacation.

As the huge overwhelming majority of people appear to get ever so slightly pissed off with those who insist upon shutting down Derry and inconveniencing its residents, traders and visitors - It was ironically funny listening to many of those who had been evacuated talking on their phones and attempting to convince those on the other end that it wasn't an April Fool's prank - After a controlled explosion, on this occassion, the device was declared an elaborate hoax - Pic James Whorriskey.

The van at the centre of a security alert, which caused traffic chaos in Derry/Londonderry on Friday afternoon, sits abandoned on the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge. Both decks of the bridge were sealed off causing agony for thousands of road users. Pic James Whorriskey.
This pic was taken from well within the Foyle Road security cordon as officers had failed to seal a pedestrian access route from Abercorn Road, unwittingly allowing access to within yards of the vehicle. In fact there was no security between me and it.
As I travelled away from the scene I caught a few shots of the bomb disposal team speeding through gridlocked traffic towards the bridge and shortlyafter this picture the van was extensively damaged in a controlled explosion.

Sensationalism where none exists?
Traffic on the R108 roadway builds as passing motorists all stop for a look at the minor incident. surrounding flight DAL073.
Ironicially, by the time this image was taken, the seurity alert was long over!
The 767 encountered a 'security alert' whilst en-route to the US, and diverted to Dublin. Fortunately the incident was a false alarm. Upon roll out on landing on runway 10 the wheel brakes overheated and this situation was promptly, and efficiently attended to by the DAA fire service. The 'story' made several news outlets and amazing conclusions were reached by those present.
As a frequent, very frequent, visitor to this area, I have never seen as many people!!!! It seemed every person had a theory. Of all the myoipc questions that were put to me, by quasi 'experts', I have to note that no-one enquired of the passengers and their ordeal!!!!!!j

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story perhaps was evident here? Fortunately for all concerned the 'security alert' was a hoax. The aircraft had a faster than usual approach to runway 10 as dictated by the urgency of the situation. With perhaps a high weight remaning the aircraft was heavy. The resultant braking action to slow the jet overheated the wheel brakes slightly. This was the main focus of the DAA Fire Service. Perhaps to the disappointment of the media present.

The X Files have been re-opened. How much of a danger to society is this new threat? Have any of our aircraft gone missing? Does this strange unidentified Flying Object come from another planet? How many new laws will have to be passed restricting our freedom?
This strange object was first spotted in Manchester by Mliebenberg:
What's in that box down there ?
Just rubbish.
Will I go down and get it ?
Yea, suppose so.
Initially I thought that it was a bit strange that a police officer would just walk down the street and pick up a random box of rubbish during a bomb scare. Closer examination of the photo, however, seemed to suggest that the box contained discarded white scene of crime suits and gloves, which had been left behind when the police cordon had been collapsed inwards.
