Data on government sector receipts, and on taxes in particular, are basic inputs to most structural economic descriptions and economic analyses and are increasingly used in international comparisons. This annual publication presents a unique set of detailed and internationally comparable tax data in a common format for all OECD countries from 1965 onwards. It also gives a conceptual framework to define which government receipts should be regarded as taxes and to classify different types of taxes.

The first cathedral was built in 1541 in what is now the church of Santa María de Gracia. The original church was built with adobe and thatched roofs. Until May 30, 1574 everything had gone smoothly, however, while celebrating Mass, neighbors threw a few shots in the air in the yard next door, some fell in the church and it caught fire. The church was partially destroyed. By royal decree gave the money to the new cathedral. The work proceeded very slowly, for scarce funds, but by February 1618 the master architect Martin Casillas had brought the work to completion. Finally in April of that year he moved the Blessed Sacrament, of the old church to the new. In 1818, a strong earthquake shook the city, and when this had happened ended another tragedy: the towers and the dome had collapsed. Were replaced by new ones, same as also collapsed from a subsequent earthquake in 1849. The new towers were built by the engineer, architect Manuel Gomez Ibarra, costing 33.521 pesos, it took three years to be built and was completed in 1854. Pope Pius XII elevated to the rank of minor basilica, dedicating it to the Assumption of Mary.

Today the cathedral remains in danger has been damaged by the earthquakes of 1932, 1957, 1979, 1985, 1995 and 2003. Among the threats to include: the slight inclination of the north tower, his slight subsidence and structural damage suffered by the dome, among others.

The cathedral occupies an area of 77.8 x 72.75 meters. Contains altars dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Sorrows, the Virgin of Zapopan (patron saint of Guadalajara), Santo Domingo, San Nicolás de Bari, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Juan de Dios.

There are 52 seats carved wooden chair in addition to the Cardinal. The consecration table is marble and silver. The stained glass windows imported from France.

There are also images of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Christ of the Waters, among others. Also, the cathedral houses relics of the Roman martyr St. Innocent.

Three cardinals are buried in the cathedral, and several bishops of the diocese and even the heart of a president of the Mexican Republic.

Constant - Grote gele sector (1958)

Constant’s New Babylon

In 1956, Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys started work on a vast architectural and urban planning project that he called New Babylon. He worked on it non-stop for almost twenty years. In 2004 he said, “New Babylon is not a model that should be imitated, but rather an illustration of a way of life in a hypothesized society. This way of life is nomadic in principle. People travel the world leaving tracks that can form a network. A city as a network. New Babylon is a nomadic city. Nothing is fixed.”

In the 1950s, Constant foresaw that the ever-increasing automation of society would give people both increasing amounts of leisure time and the ability to travel with growing ease and speed over greater distances using the then rapidly expanding road and air transport networks. “New Babylon is a gigantic labyrinthine complex raised above the earth on tall pillars. The various tiers of the city can be reached via lifts and stairs and are almost entirely roofed-in and climate-controlled. With their many levels and terraces, they form a vast multi-layered space that constantly offers new surprises as a result of its functional flexibility, climatic variability and light and sound effects. New Babylonians can wander around like modern nomads, in search of new experiences and unknown sensations.”

Rwanda’s private sector players are optimistic of business and investment opportunities that will come with Rwanda hosting the upcoming Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF) that will take place during this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM 2020).

This was revealed today in a breakfast meeting organized by RDB (Rwanda Development Board) and the Private Sector Federation (PSF) to engage members of the private sector on the opportunities that they stand to take advantage of by participating at the CBF.

CBF will bring together between 1,000 to 1,200 business and government leaders from all Commonwealth countries for a dialogue on practical ways to enhance trade and investment.

The forum will be structured around plenary sessions and interactive workshops over three days, and will also facilitate B2G and B2B discussions at the very highest levels, addressing key themes that affect the 54 diverse Commonwealth member nations.

Speaking while making her remarks, Clare Akamanzi, the RDB Chief Executive Officer said:

“I have every confidence that you agree with me that CBF 2020 presents a unique platform for us to market Rwanda as the best destination for investments. Indeed, we look forward to the private sector signing deals and partnerships on projects that will contribute to the sustainable economic growth of our country through profits, jobs, and increasing Rwanda’s exports. Just to give you some context, over 2.4 billion people live within the Commonwealth Marketplace, and this year will see US$ 1 trillion worth of trade realised within the Commonwealth for the very first time. This means that we have a limitless market for our Made in Rwanda products and services and there shouldn’t be reason not to export more quantities to these countries.”

Robert Bapfakulera, the PSF Chairman said:

“It is important for us to ensure that the CBF leaves a lasting and positive legacy, with Rwanda at the centre of Commonwealth trade for its two years as Chair-in Office. To achieve this, the private sector must be fully prepared to optimise the Commonwealth trade opportunity-for business, investment and trade. CBF is an extremely unique platform for us to meet strategic partners and do great business.”

CHOGM 2020 will take place in Kigali from 22nd to 28thJune and will have four main forums which are Commonwealth Business, People’s, Women and Youth forums.
