Gull Rocks at Holywell Bay

Late afternoon at Sumner Beach September 24, 2014 Christchurch New Zealand.

Sumner is a coastal seaside suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand and was surveyed and named in 1849 in honour of John Bird Sumner, the then newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury and president of the Canterbury Association. Originally a separate borough, it was amalgamated with the city of Christchurch as communications improved and the economies of scale made small town boroughs uneconomic to operate.

Sumner is nestled in a coastal valley separated from the adjacent city suburbs by rugged volcanic hill ridges that end in cliffs that descend to the sea shore in places. Sumner Bay is the first bay on the northern side of Banks Peninsula and faces Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Because of its ocean exposure, a high surf can form in some swell conditions. The beach is gently sloping, with fine grey sand. It is a popular surf beach for these reasons.

Sand dunes have filled the river valley behind the beach. This has made housing construction relatively easy, although flooding at the head of the valley has been a problem in the past due to the reverse slope caused by the sand dunes filling the front of the valley. This has been addressed by a flood drain.

The rocky volcanic outcrop of Cave Rock dominates the beach. Until the mid-1860s, the feature was known as Cass Rock, after the surveyor Thomas Cass.[9] There are other rocky outcrops in the area and the volcanic nature of the geology is readily apparent from several of the exposed cliffs around the valley.

A sea wall and wide esplanade have been built along the length of the beach to prevent coastal erosion.

Taken at St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall, after an afternoon where there was no potential for the camera to be taken out of the bag! We were simply exploring for a future shoot, found this wonderful composition, and all of a sudden the weather improved and the lighting changed. That's the beauty of nature....

Thank you all for your recent comments and faves - off to the Norfolk Broads for a week!

We always take our Dachshund Frankie for a daily walk along the beaches of Hervey bay, for the last couple of days he has had Father staying with us whilst his owners are on holiday so we have had double fun on the sand flats.

Hervey bay/ˈhɑrvi ˈbeɪ/ is a city in Queensland, Australia. The city is situated approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) or 3½ hours highway drive north of the state capital, Brisbane. It is a natural bay between the Queensland mainland and nearby Fraser Island. The local economy relies on tourism which is based primarily around whale watching in Platypus Bay to the North, access to Fraser Island, accessible recreational fishing and boating and the natural north facing, calm beaches with wide undeveloped foreshore zones.

At the 2011 Australian Census the city recorded a population of 76,403.[1] Hervey Bay is an area of high population growth...

Climate

Hervey Bay has a mild climate with an average 30 °C (86 °F) in summer and 22 °C (72 °F) in winter. The coast is predominantly affected by the south east trade winds throughout the summer with occasional strong northerly winds and storm swells. These winds keep the temperatures down in summer and up in winter, preventing temperature extremes. As a result, Hervey Bay rarely experiences temperatures over 35 °C (95 °F) in summer or under 5 °C (41 °F) in winter.

Cyclones are a threat at times with Cyclone Hamish threatening in 2009 as a Category 5. The land mass of Fraser Island significantly affects the pattern of weather in Hervey Bay and protects the immediate marine environment from open ocean storm effects. Cyclone Oswald in 2013 caused significant damage in the area, mainly as a result of tornadoes spawned by the system. The average rainfall for the year is around 1,100 millimetres (43 in). December to March is the main rainy period, with a secondary peak in May and June. The months of April and from July to November are generally dry and sunny.

Whale watching

Hervey Bay is the whale watching capital of Australia, with humpback whales migrating along the coast between April and October every year. Researchers at the Oceania Project conducted a 14 year study which found the bay was an important social hub for humpback whales.[15] Whale number have increased from about 2,000 in 1992, to around 7,000 in 2005.[15] Hervey Bay is the resting place for Humpback whales, Mum's and Calves, they come to the Bay to rest and build up energy for their long travels back to Antarctica. The Adults come to play, socialise and there have been heat runs observed in the Bay. The Humpback Whales are known to be very relaxed in the company of the whale watching vessels.

Rocky coves and pink sands characterise the Gruinard Bay beaches, with spectacular views and scenery.

Gruinard Bay has three stunning, pink sand beaches from the Torridon rocks. From Gruinard Bay there are wonderful views across island studded waters to the Coigach Hills. The area is very interesting from a geological viewpoint and many unusual stones can be found near the rocks and shoreline. The beach offers spectacular views of An Teallach and the northern Highlands.

I've come to the conclusion that after a series of long night shifts, there should be a series of long exposures.

Always a nice feeling when my two week block of nights has finished, even nicer when it's a beautiful sunny morning and you have the beach to yourself except for a particularly wet and smelly springer spaniel bouncing around and licking your camera lens :)

A school of sharks in a feeding frenzy on the beach at our five hut Robinson Crusoe resort. Our Polynesian cook/boat pilot/concierge had just thrown out a bunch of fish scraps leftover from lunch. The docile Black-Tipped Sharks are not dangerous to humans but, as he said laughing in his best English “don’t feed them by hand”. His dog just loved charging through them and chasing them off.

A rainy afternoon (another rainy afternoon!) in dear old Sidmouth.

The very popular Bournemouth Beach seen on a warm March day earlier this year.

Bournemouth is host to the famous Bournemouth Air Festival which this year saw 900,000 visit over 3 days!

Always nice to see a double Decker on the 124. Back in August 2017. Lothian moved 794-800 from Lothian to East Coast Buses. Here we see East Coast Buses (20)796 on a service 124 to North Berwick seen here at Joppa.

I have been happy, tho' in a dream.

I have been happy- and I love the theme:

Dreams! in their vivid coloring of life,

As in that fleeting, shadowy, misty strife

Of semblance with reality, which brings

To the delirious eye, more lovely things

Of Paradise and Love- and all our own!

Bournemouth 26.05.2015

It was our last morning at Cape Byron, so we decided to rush out at 430 in the morning to try and catch sunrise. It was cold and windy but fun nonetheless.
