this scripture was in a skylight in the chapel at the eastern state penitentiary
"Be your sins like crimson, they can turn snow-white; Be they red as dyed wool, they can become like fleece"
"These are the [in]famous masseboth of the scriptures, execrated and doomed to destruction by the prophets. The stones were erected by the believers to perpetuate their presence, or the presence of a third party, in the sight of the divinity. They were sacred, or to put it simply, full of magic power. Nearly all of them have come down to us in the upright position, just as we see them now. It sometimes happened that as the soil level rose in the temple and it became almost derelict, one of the standing stones would break. But there was always some pious soul to stand the broken piece back against the standing shaft. The same practice can be observed in countries where there are 'calvaries', ie. monumental crosses. If an arm should fall, it is always stood against the upright; the cross dies standing... ('Byblos', Maurice Dunand) These are in the courtyard of the temple, surrounding the central cella. The space is filled with 30 or so, some of which are very small, no more than 25 cm.s in height.
- "Devotional activity took place around the central chapel or cella in which [once] stood 'the tall obelisk.' This was the abstract symbol of the god Reshef, all-powerful in matters of war. The name of the god appears on an obelisk which is now in [the National museum in] Beirut." (Maurice Dunand) "Niches for statuettes, basins and jars for cleansing and sacrifice complete the external religious installations. A rich variety of offerings were buried in the sanctuary, consisting of gold and bronze weapons and a countless number of human and animal figurines." (a plaque)
- "Physical reminders such as these, along with numerous biblical references, amply testify to the centrality of masseboth in ancient religious ritual. The word massebah and its variants appear 34 times in the Bible; additional references to synonyms such as “stone” (even) or “pillar” (‘amud) also abound. As might be expected, most often the Bible condemns masseboth. A surprising 13 references, however, are neutral or even positive. Eight occur in the Book of Genesis alone. Isaiah contains one of the most positive references to masseboth." members.bib-arch.org/publication.asp?PubID=BSBA&Volum...
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.
