The four layers of this print were exposed on the same screen, so I was able to print all the colours on the same day, rather than having to strip and re-expose the screen each time I wanted to print another layer, which is what I had to do with the last print I posted -- you know, the one with all the mugshot faces that progressed at an unbelievably slow rate.
This summer's big work in progress -- the subject matter will be familiar to regular viewers of this Flickr stream, of course.
This is the first test run of the screens, the point of which is to work out whether the inks are printing as they should and to see if I need to add further layers of colour (it turns out I do).

This is a new print that I am currently in the middle of at the moment. This print may be included in the Sketch Klubb show in November 2009 at The Texas Firehouse in Brooklyn. At the pace that I am working, I should be finished by the end of October.
A little back story: Back in 2007, when we would meet at Domy Books, Eric Pearce gathered all our drawings from one of our February Sketch Klubb sessions. Well, out of that bunch of drawings, Eric created this massive print (22.5" by 30") plus this original Veronica drawing (from the Archie Comics) done in a sultry pin-up style but with “tattoos” of all the Sketch Klubb guys all over her body. When I found out about Archie proposing to Veronica back in August on NPR, I suddenly thought about Eric’s print and asked if he would be interested in doing one but with the blonde bombshell Betty. This new print would incorporate all the work of the latest grouping of Sketch Klubb to include Sebastian and Cody.
So Eric made a great drawing of Betty which I took and prepared for the screenprint. Right now, I am still in the middle of putting all the drawings from the Sketch Klubb guys on her body. It is a lengthy process but I am trying to match everything to Eric’s original piece right down to the colors and proportions.
I added in several drawings and sketches by different members of Sketch Klubb. But there are still a few people absent here that I need to add in. So I deliberately made space on Betty’s body (the knees, the arm, neck) for that. As I was printing this, a person looked over my shoulder and said that I needed to add some small knuckle tattoos similar to the Veronica poster that read “SK07”. So I will need to add that “SK09” in at a later date.
Last week I went to the screenprint studio and printed a lot, I always love going home with a big plile of freshly printed fabrics.
I have a page in this book called THE LITTLE BOOK OF SCREENPRINTING, written by Caspar Williamson, published by Chronicle Books and available now. It gives a brief overview of how screenprinting works and showcases about 100 contemporary artists working in the medium including Gary Taxali, Seripop, Mikey Burton, Landland, Little Friends, and a whole lot of other really talented people. Stuff those stockings!
