HSS?- experimenting this week

Continuing with the experimentation: while it seems as though I’m not able to save the exact version of the magnifier’s picture, I can take a screenshot. This one is with the filter that reversed the colors. Wonder if it will come through with the EXIF info— need to go check that right now!!

(A little later)- nope no EXIF data

.

Thanks to Flickr friend Elisa Liddell around 2017 or 2018 for introducing me to the books written by Harold and Phyllis Davis. Those are The Photoshop Darkroom vol 1 & 2. Elisa and I had been writing back and forth about the LAB color space.

In his books, Davis writes about his editing process. I've been having a go at it at intervals, and with this particular photo I really liked the outcome.

As he does, I converted my RGB to the LAB color space. Then I made three copies of that. On individual copies I inverted a channel, ending up with a copy with inverted L, a copy with inverted A and a copy with inverted B.

I really liked the look of the inverted L. It looks a lot like the finished image but with brown flowers. Which were okay but I thought might be better as part of a different work.

In the first comment box below you'll see a screenshot of the work in progress image and all the layers.

The bottom most layer is the inverted L. I've found that I have an easier time if I work in the RGB image so converted it back before doing anything else. It's set to Normal blend mode.

Above the inv L layer is a layer in which I painted red flowers at the bottom, to balance the red that's in the upper part of the image.

Above that is the inv B layer which I dragged in along with a layer mask to only show the flowers. You'll see the full inv B image in a comment box below and why I wanted to mask out all but the flowers. I set the inv B layer to Hard Light blend mode which increases contrast depending upon the tonal range of the colors compared to those below.

Above the inv B is another copy of the inv L but set to Color Burn blend mode to deepen shadows. I grabbed some of that deep green color and put it into a solid color layer above the inv L and also set it to Color Burn, but masked the blue flowers from being affected.

Then I merged everything up and went to Nik Color Efex where I found a pre-set that adds light as if your subject was lit using a golden metallic reflector. I liked it a lot and copied that to a second layer and set it also to Color Burn for more emphasis, masking the blue flowers from being affected.

Above those Reflector Efex layers I created a brownish gold color, filled a solid color adj layer with it and set it to Hard Mix blend mode. Hard Mix is one of the eight blend modes that react differently with sliding the Fill opacity rather than Layer opacity. Fill opacity is only 13% for this layer, creating a slightly golden glow on the leaves in the upper framed. I used a gradient mask to prevent that from happening at the lower right frame as it made things there too light.

I learned about the Hard Mix blend mode from a youtube video by Blake Rudis. He imparts a lot of info about color theory and using it, in various videos.

Above that autumn gold Hard Mix layer you'll see the gold CB layer. I created a darker yellow brown setting it to Color Burn and limiting it to the lower right corner to build gentle density there.

Above the gold CB is a medium black to medium grey gradient set to Soft Light blend mode for adding contrast, but masked from affecting the lower flowers.

I added two copies of the un-inverted image made brighter to get something in the flowers' centers. One copy is set to Exclusion blend mode the other is Normal blend mode for the very center. Curves adjustments were clipped to each for tonal adjustment.

Above the flower centers is a dodge and burn layer. It's 50% grey set to Linear Light blend mode and then painted upon using the dodge or burn tools. I felt that parts of the blue flowers needed more contrast.

The top most layer is to add texture into the blue flowers. Back in one of the LAB copies, in the L channel, I used the Find Edges command and created an alpha channel to use to create a mask. I brought that mask into the RGB image and used it to fill edges with black, but I didn't like it except in the middle of the petals. The mask associated with the layer allows the texture to only be within the petals.

And that's that!

Happy Sliders Sunday!
