The Scottish Highlands

Walking from Ratagan to Letterfearn

The Caledonian Canal

The Caledonian Canal is Scotland's longest inland waterway. It runs from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east and follows the course of the Great Glen – a 100km long narrow valley – and cuts through Lochs Oich, Lochy and Ness.

You will find a different rhythm

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;

Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go. - Robbie Burns

Loch Long is a body of water in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Sea Loch extends from the Firth of Clyde at its southwestern end. It measures approximately 20 miles (32 km) in length, with a width of between 1 and 2 miles (1.6 and 3.2 km). The loch also has an arm, Loch Goil, on its western side.

Loch Long forms part of the coast of the Cowal peninsula and forms the entire western coastline of the Rosneath Peninsula.

Loch Long was historically the boundary between Argyll and Dunbartonshire. However, in 1996 boundary redrawing meant that it moved wholly within the council area of Argyll and Bute.

Holidays in Scotland in winter always stir the imagination that there will be a decent amount of snow about and the already startling landscape will be transformed into a winter wonderland. The added bonus is that whatever the snow situation there are such a wide range of stunning places, and Gruinard beach is a wonderful spot on a sunny day!! Cold day in the sun by Foo Fighters is perfect , but it's not as cold as last time we visited, when I paddled through sheets of ice!

Located near the village of Carbost on the Isle of Skye, visitors can embark on a stunning walk from Glen Brittle towards the Fairy Pools.

The Fairy Pools is a popular hotspot for photographers and walkers, and is one of the most magical places in Scotland.

Culzean Castle is a castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, Carrick, on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy, but is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The clifftop castle lies within the Culzean Castle Country Park and is opened to the public. Since 1987, an illustration of the castle has featured on the reverse side of five pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Culzean Castle was constructed as an L-plan castle by order of the 10th Earl of Cassilis. He instructed the architect Robert Adam to rebuild a previous, but more basic, structure into a fine country house to be the seat of his earldom. The castle was built in stages between 1777 and 1792. It incorporates a large drum tower with a circular saloon inside (which overlooks the sea), a grand oval staircase and a suite of well-appointed apartments.

In 1945, the Kennedy family gave the castle and its grounds to the National Trust for Scotland (thus avoiding inheritance tax). In doing so, they stipulated that the apartment at the top of the castle be given to General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower in recognition of his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. The General first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States.

The Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry, a British Yeomanry cavalry regiment, was formed by The Earl of Cassillis at Culzean Castle in about 1794. On 24 June 1961, the regiment returned to the castle to be presented with its first guidon by General Sir Horatius Murray, KBE, CB, DSO.

The castle re-opened in April 2011 after a refurbishment funded by a gift in the will of American millionaire William Lindsay to the National Trust for Scotland. Lindsay, who had never visited Scotland, requested that a significant portion of his $4 million go towards Culzean. Lindsay was reportedly interested in Eisenhower's holidays at the castle.

Culzean Castle received 220,000 visitors in 2013, making it the National Trust for Scotland's second-most popular property.

Couldn't believe the calm nature of the deer here. They are often fed on the Glen Etive road, but this one was so happy to just stand and pose for me. Processed with VSCO Portra 160.

The Sound of Raasay & the Skye Skyline, Isle of Skye, Scotland

I returned to the Isle of Skye mid-November on my own for three days before running my five day workshop there, my first since February 2019 and I had forgotten just how spectacular a place it is.

This truly stunning scene was shot at mid-morning from Rigg Viewpoint on the east coast, just ten miles north of Portree. I was driving by en-route to Portree when I spotted this sublime light and I ju8st had to stop and spend half an hour there capturing this magnificent view.

I decided to shoot the image in the square aspect ratio in-camera as that is exactly how I wanted to capture the image. The diagonal lines are dominating but they work perfectly to my eyes. I hope you all enjoy the photo too.

We decided to take our chances on the road today, and it was a relatively easy trip - just one part on the M1 where there are 4 lanes of traffic, the wind was high and blustery and the rain was dreadful! The spray was nasty, and so many idiots driving far too fast and weaving in and out of the traffic! The rest was really quite ok. WE left really early in snow and sleet, but there was no traffic on the roads own Scotland, and not much in northern England (Very sad not to be able to take Baxter on Bamburgh beach!) The little dog was an absolute marvel for the whole of the time we were away!!!

Loch Garry is a large expanse of fresh water nestling within Glen Garry. As the road curves its way up the side of the mountains, the upper stretch of the loch is reminiscent of the shape of Scotland and with mountains in the distance, the view is outstanding.

This loch has been used as background scenery in Braveheart and Rob Roy, both movies were filmed here in the 1990s

Not only does Scotland have an abundance of great locations but it has weather that can create just as much interest. Often its the main reason to take a photo...
