Here's a great activity for teaching kids some basic optics.
You can make a simple lens (plano convex - which means flat on one side and curved on the other) with nothing more than a drop of water on top of some clear cellophane or plastic (you can usually find something suitable in old packaging material). Put the plastic over a newspaper then drop some water on with your finger. Experiment with drops of different shapes and sizes. If the plastic you've used is fairly rigid, try lifting it (slowly and carefully, so you don't disturb your water drop) and holding it at different distances from the paper. What difference does it make?

We're big fans of reinventing the toilet paper roll! It's one of our very favorite craft materials. As a matter of fact, this preschool craft idea is just one of many toilet paper roll crafts we have on www.easy-child-crafts.com.

I presented a training for child care teachers called "Exploring Nature" where we discussed activities and ideas that can be incorporated into their classrooms. One activity was to make a "Worm Jar". With some layers of sand and dirt, a huge glass jar and worms from the bait shop, you have an interesting science activity for the kids to explore and observe. I made this jar on Tuesday and these guys have been hard at work making these cool tunnels through-out the jar. Once it gets a little warmer outside, these guys are heading out to the flower bed!
