I had this idea to make a design like the scales on a butterfly's wings using the free paint sample cards you get at hardware stores. I had an image like this in my mind: library.thinkquest.org/04oct/00587/scienceactivity.htm
I cut up some colour sample cards and tried just overlapping the "scales" to see how it looked. I refined the pattern and made it into a birthday card for my sister.
